The Cost Of Misapplication Of Herbicides, Robert Grisso, Elbert C. Dickey, Larry D. Schulze Jan 1989

The Cost Of Misapplication Of Herbicides, Robert Grisso, Elbert C. Dickey, Larry D. Schulze

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A field survey of 103 private herbicide applicators was conducted during the spring of 1986 in 12 central and eastern Nebraska counties. The results showed that only 30% of the cooperators were applying herbicides within 5% of their intended application rate. Twenty-six percent of the cooperators over-applied herbicides during a single application, with an average cost due to misapplication of $3.11/ha ($1.26/a). If these values were extended over Nebraska, $4.26 million are expended for extra herbicides which were not necessary. The average cost of over application was in excess of $570 per application. Forty-four percent of the cooperators under-applied herbicides …

Lead In Your Drinking Water, Joseph L. Taraba Jan 1989

Lead In Your Drinking Water, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recently imposed a regulation requiring public water suppliers to notify all their customers of the potential health effects of lead from household plumbing. The USEPA regulates public water supplies (with at least 15 service connections or servicing 25 individuals) but does not regulate private water supplies. The potential health hazard of lead is also present from household plumbing which is supplied water from a private water source.

Bottled Water, Joseph L. Taraba Jan 1989

Bottled Water, Joseph L. Taraba

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Bottled water is an option for families who have a water problem, whether their water is unsafe or has an "off" taste or odor. It is best used as a temporary measure or in small quantities for drinking water. At a cost of 65 cents to $1.15 per gallon (Lexington, KY; July 1988) bottled water could become an expensive item for a large family using it for drinking and cooking.

Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Function Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, P. L. Tso Jan 1989

Characteristic Surfaces For Three-Position Function Generation With Planar Four-Bar Mechanisms, Clark R. Barker, P. L. Tso

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper considers the relationship between the three-position function-generation problem and the solution space for planar four-bar mechanisms. The two infinities of solutions possible are mapped in a plane to determine the locations where particular types of mechanisms occur. It is possible to generate a contour in the mapping plane which joins together all solutions which possess a common characteristic in regard to their link lengths. This same contour can be displayed in the solution space to ascertain the overall characteristics of potential solutions to the design problem. A numerical example is used for illustrative purposes, but the results can …

Generic Singularities Of Robot Manipulators, Ming-Chuan Leu, D. K. Pai Jan 1989

Generic Singularities Of Robot Manipulators, Ming-Chuan Leu, D. K. Pai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The singularities of the differential kinematic map, i.e. of the manipulator Jacobian, are considered. The authors first examine the notion of a generic kinematic map, whose singularities form smooth manifolds of prescribed dimension in the joint space of the manipulator. For three-joint robots, an equivalent condition for genericity using determinants is derived. The condition lends itself to symbolic computation and is sufficient for the study of decoupled manipulators, i.e. manipulators that an be separated into a three-joint translating part and a three-joint orienting part. The results are illustrated by analyzing the singularities of two classes of three-joint positioning robots.

Mixed Convection In Vertical Internal Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Rama Subba Reddy Gorla, Bahman Ghorashi, Prapat Wangskarn

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The theory of micropolar fluids due to Eringen is used to formulate a set of equations for the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the combined convection micropolar flow in vertical channels. It is found that the microstructure and substructure parameters have significant effects on the flow and thermal fields. By making the Newtonian solvent more and more micropolar, it is possible to obtain drag reduction as well as reduced heat transfer characteristics.

Interim Guidelines For Design Of Highway Pavements, Gary W. Sharpe, Ronald D. Hughes, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The adequacy of a pavement design is directly related to the accuracy of traffic data, axle load information and materials data. It is assumed that appropriate construction procedures will be employed and that the pavements will be maintained periodically during the course of their service lives.

It is assumed that the subgrade will be constructed at or near the optimum moisture content and to the maximum dry density as specified in appropriate standard specifications. It is also assumed that the base course materials meet design requirements, that the aggregates will meet soundness and durability requirements and that the aggregate base …

Modeling The Electromagnetic Radiation From Electrically Small Table-Top Products, Todd H. Hubing, J. Frank Kaufman Jan 1989

Modeling The Electromagnetic Radiation From Electrically Small Table-Top Products, Todd H. Hubing, J. Frank Kaufman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is noted that the most difficult radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems with table-top products often occur at frequencies where the maximum dimensions of the product are much smaller than a wavelength. Electrically small table-top products tend to be much more efficient radiation sources than dipole source models would predict, and the radiation is generally much more difficult to contain than other types of EMI source models indicated. The ways in which electrically small sources radiate are investigated, and a technique for modeling electrically small table-top products that have power or signal cables is proposed. The end-driven wire model is …

The Next Generation Of Internetworking, Gurudatta M. Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper describes a research effort concerned with the design of the next generation of internet architecture, which has been necessitated by two emerging trends. First, there will be at least a few orders of magnitude increase in data rates of communication networks in the next few years. For example, researchers are already prototyping networks with data rates of up to a few hundred Mbps, and are planning networks with data rates up to a few Gbps. Second, researchers from all disciplines of science, engineering, and humanities plan to use the communication infrastructure to access widely distributed resources in order …

Determinism And Connectionism In A Rule-Based Natural Language System, Stan C. Kwasny, Kanaan A. Faisal Jan 1989

Determinism And Connectionism In A Rule-Based Natural Language System, Stan C. Kwasny, Kanaan A. Faisal

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The processing of Natural Language is, at the same time, natural symbolic and naturally symbolic and naturally sub-symbolic. It is symbolic because ultimately symbols play a critical role. Writing systems, for example, owe their existence to the symbolic nature of language. It is also sub-symbolic because of the nature of speech, the fuzziness of concepts, and the high degree of parallelism that is difficult to explain as a purely symbolic phenomenon. This report details a set of experiments which support the claim that Natural Language can be syntactically processed in a robust manner using a connectionist deterministic parser. The model …

Optimal Design Rules Applied To The Design Of High-Speed Mechanisms Under Deflection And Stress Constraints, Frank W. Liou, Jenny Liu Jan 1989

Optimal Design Rules Applied To The Design Of High-Speed Mechanisms Under Deflection And Stress Constraints, Frank W. Liou, Jenny Liu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Presented in this paper are two approaches for the design of flexible mechanisms under stress and deflection constraints. Based on the optimality conditions derived in this paper, two procedures are developed to design the minimum weight of mechanisms subject to stress and deflection limitations. The first procedure is the improvement of Thornton's design process r 17), and the second procedure is based on the interpolation technique. Several design examples are also presented to demonstrate these methods.

Axisymmetric Vibrations Of Reinforced Orthotropic Shallow Spherical Caps, Victor Birman, George J. Simitses Jan 1989

Axisymmetric Vibrations Of Reinforced Orthotropic Shallow Spherical Caps, Victor Birman, George J. Simitses

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Axisymmetric vibrations of reinforced shallow, spherical caps manufactured from orthotropic materials are considered. The closed form solution is obtained for the natural frequency of the cap with a clamped and immovable circular edge by assuming that the motion component parallel to the cap boundary plane (in plane) is negligible. Parametric studies are performed to assess the effect of various geometric and structural parameters on the natural frequency of the cap and, most importantly, to identify the most influencing parameters of the problem. From the generated data, it is concluded that the national frequency increases with increasing extensional stiffness and eccentricity …

Nucleation Of Electrodeposited Copper On Anodized Titanium, J. L. Delplancke, M. Sun, Thomas J. O'Keefe, R. Winand Jan 1989

Nucleation Of Electrodeposited Copper On Anodized Titanium, J. L. Delplancke, M. Sun, Thomas J. O'Keefe, R. Winand

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study has been made to determine the effect of an electrochemically produced titanium-oxide film on the nucleation of copper. The oxide films were made galvanostatically at 25°C in 1 M sulphuric acid on pure titanium metal. Potentiodynamic, potential step and current step experiments were performed in an additive-free copper sulphate-sulphuric acid electrolyte at 25°C. It was found that the oxide film played an important role during nucleation. By increasing the thickness of the anodic film, it was possible to decrease the diameter and to increase the surface density of copper nuclei. The kinetics of nucleation and growth of the …

The Effect Of Cable Terminations On Emi Measurements, Todd H. Hubing Jan 1989

The Effect Of Cable Terminations On Emi Measurements, Todd H. Hubing

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of using uncontrolled or undefined cable terminations during electromagnetic interference (EMI) measurements was investigated. Several different models are described along with corresponding measurements in order to illustrate how specific terminations can be used to achieve particular measurement goals. It is noted that until a well-defined method of terminating power and signal cables is introduced, the best the EMI test engineer can do is to be aware of the significance of common-mode terminations and try to avoid situations where the common-mode termination impedance is completely undefined or not repeatable.

Lqg/Ltr Controller Design Using A Reduced Order Model, Rajiva Prakash, Vittal S. Rao Jan 1989

Lqg/Ltr Controller Design Using A Reduced Order Model, Rajiva Prakash, Vittal S. Rao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A specific robust controller design procedure, linear quadratic Gaussian with loop transfer recovery (LQG/LTR), is studied. LQG/LTR design using a reduced-order model is performed. The error due to the use of the reduced model is accounted for by computing multiplicative error. All closed right half plane modes of the given system are included in the reduced-order model. The reduced-order LQG/LTR controller design procedure is applied to the problem of lateral attitude control of a drone aircraft. The case study demonstrates the reduction/design steps for a practical problem.

Electrical conductivity and Seebeck measurements on LaCr0.98Nb0.02CrO3 show that the defect structure of the material is mainly controlled by the extrinsic electrons formed by the Nb donors through the electronic compensation process. The experimental results also indicate that this material conducts electricity via a small polaron mechanism with an electron mobility around 0.004-0.01 cm2/V sec between 1100 and 1300°C. © 1989.

Activated Carbon Filters, Joseph L. Taraba, Linda Heaton, Tom Ilvento Jan 1989

Activated Carbon Filters, Joseph L. Taraba, Linda Heaton, Tom Ilvento

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

Many people feel the water supplied by public water systems to their home faucets is not safe. Most people judge the quality of their water by taste, odor and appearance. But the risk to one's health cannot be judged by these factors. Many of the chemicals or biological organisms that affect one's health are tasteless, odorless and cannot be seen. In searching for a means to improve the safety to their drinking water they encounter water filters, water purifiers, activated carbon (AC) filters that are common names for home drinking water treatment devices. In reading the labels, boxes and instructions …
