Influence Of Plastic Coating Temperature On Recycled Concrete Brick Coarse Aggregate, Jamil Ahmed Joy, Chowdhury Zubayer Bin Zahid, S. M. Imdadul Islam

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The generation of waste from the demolition of old structures poses a significant environmental challenge. Recycling these materials as aggregates in concrete offers a potential alleviation of environmental impact. While recycled aggregates offer promise as a remedy, they are not without drawbacks. However, innovative approaches have been developed to overcome these limitations. Among these, plastic coating stands out as a particularly sustainable solution. This study investigates the influence of plastic coating temperature on recycled concrete brick aggregates (RCBA), which serve as coarse aggregates. The RCBA were coated with locally sourced polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at varying temperatures, such as 250 °C, …

Surrogate-Based Multidisciplinary Optimization For The Takeoff Trajectory Design Of Electric Drones, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du Sep 2024

Surrogate-Based Multidisciplinary Optimization For The Takeoff Trajectory Design Of Electric Drones, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft attract attention due to their unique characteristics of reduced noise, moderate pollutant emission, and lowered operating cost. However, the benefits of electric vehicles, including eVTOL aircraft, are critically challenged by the energy density of batteries, which prohibit long-distance tasks and broader applications. Since the takeoff process of eVTOL aircraft demands excessive energy and couples multiple subsystems (such as aerodynamics and propulsion), multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) become essential. Conventional MDAO, however, iteratively evaluates high-fidelity simulation models, making the whole process computationally intensive. Surrogates, in lieu of simulation models, empower efficient MDAO with the …

A Robust Recurrent Neural Networks-Based Surrogate Model For Thermal History And Melt Pool Characteristics In Directed Energy Deposition, Sung Heng Wu, Usman Tariq, Ranjit Joy, Muhammad Arif Mahmood, Asad Waqar Malik, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In directed energy deposition (DED), accurately controlling and predicting melt pool characteristics is essential for ensuring desired material qualities and geometric accuracies. This paper introduces a robust surrogate model based on recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures—Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Leveraging a time series dataset from multi-physics simulations and a three-factor, three-level experimental design, the model accurately predicts melt pool peak temperatures, lengths, widths, and depths under varying conditions. RNN algorithms, particularly Bi-LSTM, demonstrate high predictive accuracy, with an R-square of 0.983 for melt pool peak temperatures. For melt pool geometry, the GRU-based …

Comparison Of Evolutionary Algorithms: A Case Study On The Multi-Objective Carbon-Aware Mine Planning, Nurul Asyikeen Binte Azhar, Aldy Gunawan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Erwin Leonardi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The NP-hard precedence-constrained production scheduling problem (PCPSP) for mine planning chooses the ordered removal of materials from the mine pit and the next processing steps based on resource, geological, and geometrical constraints. Traditionally, it prioritizes the net present value (NPV) of profits across the lifespan of the mine. Yet, the growing shift in environmental concerns also requires shifts to more carbon-aware practices. In this paper, we use the enhanced multi-objective version of the generic PCPSP formulation by adding the NPV of carbon costs as another objective. We then compare how the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) and the Pareto …

Forecasting Construction Material Prices Using Macroeconomic Indicators Of Trading Partners, Ahmed Shiha, Islam H. El-Adaway Sep 2024

Forecasting Construction Material Prices Using Macroeconomic Indicators Of Trading Partners, Ahmed Shiha, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Supply chain instabilities and inflated material prices have had a disruptive impact on cost estimating of construction projects. While several research efforts used national macroeconomic indicators to forecast the prices of domestically produced construction materials, none of the existing studies investigated whether the lagged macroeconomic indicators of the main trading partners could enhance the predictability of the prices of cement, steel, and lumber in the US construction sector. This paper fills this knowledge gap. The authors adopted a multi-step methodology that included: (1) collecting data on the target variables and the candidate leading indicators; (2) identifying the structural breaks in …

Reduction In Scc Form Pressure Through In-Situ Co2 Mineralization, Sean Monkman, Soo Duck Hwang, Kamal Khayat Sep 2024

Reduction In Scc Form Pressure Through In-Situ Co2 Mineralization, Sean Monkman, Soo Duck Hwang, Kamal Khayat

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One challenge of using self-consolidating concrete (SCC) for cast-in-place structural applications is that the rheological properties of the concrete (low yield stress and low plastic viscosity) can lead to increased lateral pressure exerted on the formwork. High structural build up and thixotropy can reduce the lateral pressure, thereby allowing for simpler formwork and faster construction. The addition of CO2 to SCC, in proportions from 0.063 % to 0.250 %, by weight of cement, was investigated as a rheology modifier. The CO2 served to increase the plastic viscosity with little impact on the dynamic yield stress up to a …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The construction industry has witnessed unprecedented disruptions in the supply chain (SC) over the past four years due to the consecutive impacts of the 2018 steel and aluminum tariffs, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russian-Ukrainian war. SC disruptions have been linked to price escalations, the management of which varies across different construction contracts. Thus, there is a timely need to understand the contractual implications of price escalation clauses. This article fulfills this research requirement by following an interdependent research methodology. First, the authors analyzed and compared price escalation provisions under various US-based, international, and UK-based standard design-bid-build contracts. Second, the …

Asphalt-Binder Mixtures Evaluated By T1 Nmr Relaxometry, Rebecca M. Herndon, Jay Balasubramanian, Magdy Abdelrahman, Klaus Woelk Sep 2024

Asphalt-Binder Mixtures Evaluated By T1 Nmr Relaxometry, Rebecca M. Herndon, Jay Balasubramanian, Magdy Abdelrahman, Klaus Woelk

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Asphalt pavements make up a majority of the essential transportation systems in the US. Asphalt mixtures age and degrade over time, reducing the pavement performance. Pavement performance critically depends on the aging of asphalt binder. The aging of asphalt binder during construction is traditionally modeled by rolling thin film oven (RTFO) testing, while aging during service life is modeled by pressure aging vessel (PAV) testing. Comparing these models to the aging of binders in actual pavements is limited because, to be used for current testing, binders must be separated from the pavement's aggregate by solvent extraction. Solvent extraction will, at …

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Nmr) Assessment Of Bio And Crude Oil-Based Rejuvenation, Rebecca M. Herndon, Jay Balasubramanian, Magdy Abdelrahman, Klaus Woelk

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Asphalt binders in pavements lose their stability through aging and eventually fail in the field. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to monitor the primary longitudinal relaxation time of asphalt samples and the ratio of material that carries this primary relaxation time has been shown to indicate the impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the aging of asphalt pavements. Longitudinal NMR relaxation was used to investigate two types of proposed asphalt rejuvenators, a bio-oil-based rejuvenator and a crude-oil-based rejuvenator. Two different binders with the performance grades (PG) 64-22 and 76-22 were considered for their interactions with the rejuvenators. After 72 h …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Evaluating the Architect's Role in Construction Contracts is Vital for Improving the Contractual Relationship and Preventing Disputes. Standard Contracts Define the Architect as an Owner's Agent And/or a Contract Administrator. Studies Often Use Qualitative and Subjective Evaluations to Analyze the Architect's Role. However, there is a Lack of Quantitative Measures that Objectively Evaluate the Architect's Capacities in Construction Contracts. This Paper Fills This Knowledge Gap. This Study Proposes a Quantitative Graph Theory-Based Approach to Analyze the Architect's Roles under Three Standard Forms of Construction Contracts in the US: (1) Extracting and Classifying Party Interactions; (2) Modeling the Interactions using Network …

Empirical Investigation Of Withdrawal Capacity Of Staple For Experimental Design Of Irish Timber, Afnan Nafees, Patrick Mcgetrick, Aimee Byrne

Conference papers

Sitka spruce is the main tree species grown in Ireland, covering over 50% of the forest area. Despite this, Ireland imported €1.8 billion worth of wood products in 2020 mostly from UK, China, US and Sweden. One of the factors that currently limits the specifying of Irish grown timber in construction applications is the lack of data relating to its structural performance. Expanding the use of this locally available material in construction will add economic and environmental benefits, creating new opportunities for employment. In order to effectively use Irish timber for structural purposes, a comprehensive analysis of its inherent properties …

Addressing Strain And Porosity Changes Of Battery Electrodes Due To Reversible Expansion Through Dem Simulations, Hunter Teel, Taylor R. Garrick, Srikant Srinivasan, Fengkun Wang, Yangbing Zeng, Sirivatch Shimpalee

Faculty Publications

In this work, discrete element method (DEM) simulations were used to probe changes in electrode porosity, electrode strain, and the resultant pressure changes for composite electrodes comprised of active material and binder particles. Through the results acquired by these simulations, three cases that are representative of two limiting cases for electrode operation, and one case for realistic electrode face pressure during operation were captured and the implications on design and performance are discussed. Predicting changes in the porosity is a unique insight that is difficult if not impossible to capture experimentally but is important for predicting changes in electrochemical performance …

On The Effects Of Personalizing Vibrotactile Feedback To Facilitate User Interaction With A Robotic System, Sudip Hazra, Panos S. Shiakolas

Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive

Distinguishable vibrotactile feedback can convey information non-verbally and complete the sensory loop when using assistive devices. Feedback can increase acceptance of assistive devices but could require personalization as these devices need to adapt to user capabilities and preferences that may affect the location for inducing feedback. Developing personalized feedback for each user may be ideal, but impractical if demand for these devices increases. In this research, we evaluate the hypothesis that the ability to define, generate, and use personalized feedback is preferred and should be provided. The hypothesis is evaluated using a system capable of capturing and recognizing non-verbal inputs, …

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is one of the most important staple crops worldwide. To ensure its global supply, the timing and duration of its growth cycle needs to be closely monitored in the field so that necessary crop management activities can be arranged in a timely manner. Also, breeders and plant researchers need to evaluate growth stages (GSs) for tens of thousands of genotypes at the plot level, at different sites and across multiple seasons. These indicate the importance of providing a reliable and scalable toolkit to address the challenge so that the plot-level assessment of GS can be …

Fpca-Setcn: A Novel Deep Learning Framework For Remaining Useful Life Prediction, Junde Chen, Yuxin Wen, Xuxue Sun, Adnan Zeb, Mohammad Saleh Meiabadi, Sasan Sattarpanah Karganroudi

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

The accurate prediction of remaining useful life (RUL) can serve as a reliable foundation for equipment maintenance, thereby effectively reducing the incidence of failure and maintenance costs. In this study, a novel deep learning (DL) framework that incorporates functional principal component analysis (FPCA) and enhanced temporal convolutional network (TCN) is proposed for RUL prediction. Precisely, FPCA is employed to capture the changing patterns in multistream degradation trajectories. Subsequently, the reconstructed signals from FPCA are fed into a convolutional block for extracting deep-level features. An enhanced squeeze-and-excitation (ESE) block is then incorporated into the network for adaptive feature recalibration, enhancing the …

Voltammetric Determination Of Hydrogen Peroxide At Decorated Palladium Nanoparticles/Poly 1,5- Diaminonaphthalene Modified Carbon-Paste Electrode, Ziad Khalifa, Mohamed Fathi Abo Oura, Magdi Abdelazzem, Ablah Hathoot

Chemical Engineering

In this work, palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs)/p1,5-DAN/ carbon paste electrode (CPE) and p1,5-DAN/CPE sensors have been developed for determination of hydrogen peroxide. Both sensors showed a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical behaviour, which were derived from a large specific area of poly 1,5 DAN and super excellent electroconductibility of PdNPs. PdNPs/p1,5-DAN/CPE exhibited excellent performance over p1,5-DAN/CPE. Thus, it was used for detecting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with linear ranges of 0.1 to 250 μM and 0.2 to 300 μM as well as detection limits (S/N= 3) of 1.0 and 5.0 nM for square wave voltammetry (SWV) and cyclic voltammetry (C.V) techniques, respectively. …

Diffuse Interface Modeling Of Non-Isothermal Stokes-Darcy Flow With Immersed Transmissibility Conditions, Hyoung Suk Suh Aug 2024

Diffuse Interface Modeling Of Non-Isothermal Stokes-Darcy Flow With Immersed Transmissibility Conditions, Hyoung Suk Suh

Faculty Scholarship

The coupling between free and porous medium flows has received significant attention since it plays an important role in a wide range of problems from fluid-soil interactions to biofluid dynamics. However, modeling this coupled process remains a difficult task as it often involves a domain decomposition algorithm in conjunction with a special treatment at the interface. The problem can become more challenging under non-isothermal conditions because it requires the iterative procedure at every time step to simultaneously meet the transient mass continuity, force equilibrium, and energy balance for the entire system. This article presents a diffuse interface framework for modeling …

In the field of composite materials, many reports have shown that catastrophic structural damage is caused by lightning strikes. In this study, new design concepts were proposed for the lightning-strike protection of nickel-coated glass/epoxy foam-core composites. Instead of using a neat metal mesh, glass fibers were modified with nickel particles via a plating technique to improve their thermal and electrical conductivities. In addition, a thin Invar plate was inserted at the middle of the structure and a foam core was introduced to reduce damage to the structure. Three models with different materials and stacking sequences were used in this study. …

One Possible Solution To The Endo Challenge For Earlier, Low Cost, Non-Invasive Diagnosis Of Endometriosis, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

This short paper outlines a potential solution to the ENDO Challenge posed by the US National Institutes of Health to spur development of painless, noninvasive diagnostic tools for early diagnosis in women suffering needlessly from endometriosis. Endometriosis is a common condition caused by regurgitation of menses backwards through the Fallopian tubes from the uterine cavity into the abdominal cavity during menstruation. A few still viable endometrial cells then implant widely and unpredictably throughout the abdominal cavity and become established on the surfaces of internal organs and the abdominal wall. There they live and remain responsive to cyclic hormones. The resulting …
