Tendrilbot: Modular Soft Robot With Versatile Radial Grasping And Locomotion Capabilities, Joshua Knospler, Nicholas Pagliocca, Wei Xue, Mitja Trkov

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

This paper introduces TendrilBot, a novel modular soft robot designed for versatile manipulation, stiffness modulation, and locomotion tasks. Built upon previously developed modular units, the TendrilBot consists of multiple actuators connected linearly in linear, cylindrical, or helix configurations. Cylindrical configurations (single row or stacked) enable the robot to wrap around objects for grasping and manipulation in a single row or stacked configuration when interconnected with the magnets on sides of the units. Additionally, such configurations further facilitate internal grasping within hollow tubes or objects holding them with its reconfigurable shape. Both wrapping and internal grasping are experimentally validated to demonstrate …

Balance Assessment Using A Handheld Smartphone With Principal Component Analysis For Anatomical Calibration, Evan C. Anthony, Olivia K. Kam, Stephen M. Klisch, Scott Hazelwood, Britta Berg-Johansen

Biomedical Engineering

Most balance assessment studies using inertial measurement units (IMUs) in smartphones use a body strap and assume the alignment of the smartphone with the anatomical axes. To replace the need for a body strap, we have used an anatomical alignment method that employs a calibration maneuver and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) so that the smartphone can be held by the user in a comfortable position. The objectives of this study were to determine if correlations existed between angular velocity scores derived from a handheld smartphone with PCA functional alignment vs. a smartphone placed in a strap with assumed alignment, and …

High-Throughput Analysis Of Topographical Cues For The Expansion Of Murine Pluripotent Stem Cells, Abigail Anne Conner, Yuan Yao, Sarah W. Chan, Deepak Jain, Suzanne M. Wong, Evelyn K. Yim, Muhammad Rizwan

Michigan Tech Publications

The expansion of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) in vitro remains a critical barrier to their use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Biochemical methods for PSC expansion are known to produce heterogeneous cell populations with varying states of pluripotency and are cost-intensive, hindering their clinical translation. Engineering biomaterials to physically control PSC fate offers an alternative approach. Surface or substrate topography is a promising design parameter for engineering biomaterials. Topographical cues have been shown to elicit profound effects on stem cell differentiation and proliferation. Previous reports have shown isotropic substrate topographies to be promising in expanding PSCs. However, the optimal …

Through the use of electrochemical simulations, variation in the local onset of lithium plating can be predicted and used to set charging guidelines to reduce the risk of lithium plating. The pseudo-two-dimensional (P2D) model is typically used for capturing this behavior; however, it only provides a global lithium plating onset estimate and does not consider the local variation. With material properties translated to an average continuum value, the P2D model can simulate rapid charge and capture global onset of lithium plating. However, this model lacks the ability to resolve localized behaviors across individual components due to local non-uniformities. Our three-dimensional …

Efficient topical drug delivery remains a significant challenge in glaucoma management. Although nanoparticle formulations offer considerable promise, their complex preparation processes, co-delivery issues, and batch consistency have hindered their potential. A scalable fabrication strategy is developed here for preparing solid drug nanoparticles (SDNs) with enhanced drug delivery efficiency. Utilizing hydrophobic antiglaucoma drugs brimonidine (BM) and betaxolol (BX), uniform fixed combination BM/BX SDNs are fabricated through a continuous process, improving batch-to-batch consistency for combined glaucoma treatment. With trehalose being used as a lyoprotectant, BM/BX SDNs can be stored as dry powder and easily reconstituted in phosphate buffered saline. Importantly, reconstituted BM/BX …

Estimation Of Cement Paste Stiffness And Uhpc Elastic Modulus Through Measured Phase-Property Upscaling, Charissa N. Puttbach, Gary S. Prinz, Cameron D. Murray

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The elastic stiffness of bulk concrete materials results from the complex interaction of aggregates, voids, and hydrated cement (which can have multiple hardened phases at multiple length scales). Given the complexities associated with understanding the arrangement of these particles within bulk concrete volumes, estimations for elastic modulus often rely on empirical correlations with unit weight and compressive strength. Such estimations are inherently scale-dependent and fail to capture variability in mix designs, particularly the variability found in specialty concrete mixes. To develop a scale-independent method for estimating elastic modulus from mix-design volume fraction information, this study explores a novel …

Load-Bearing Behaviour Of Anchors In Fibre-Reinforced Concrete – A State Of The Art Review, Ayman Mansour, Alireza Mohyeddin, Jessey Lee

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Contemporary construction heavily relies on advanced techniques for connecting and assembling structures. The most common example of construction assemblies is connecting structural and non-structural elements to a concrete substrate, often using cast-in and post-installed anchors. The widespread adoption of advanced concrete materials with high compressive strengths, such as Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC), in practical applications have led to challenges. Most of these stem from the absence of established standards and limited understanding of their impact on other structural elements, such as anchorage systems embedded in these types of substrates. This is because existing guidelines for anchorage design primarily rely …

Breaking The Causality Limit For Broadband Acoustic Absorption Using A Noncausal Active Absorber, Kangkang Wang, Sipei Zhao, Chen Shen, Haishan Zou, Jing Lu, Andrea Alu

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

The principle of causality imposes a constraint between the thickness and bandwidth of absorbers. This trade-off applies to any linear, time-invariant, passive system, limiting the development of broadband-absorbing materials that demand a thin profile for sound, light, and radio waves. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to overcome this constraint in acoustics using a noncausal active absorber whose response is controlled over time. A theoretical framework is established, which sets a relation among minimum thickness, bandwidth, and a priori information about the incident signal, representing a relaxed physical bound for noncausal absorbers. We design an absorber based on this principle and …
