Theoretical Results Supporting The Use Of Passive Damping As Augmentation To The Active Control Of Flexible Structures, Joseph Vincent Harrell Jan 1993

Theoretical Results Supporting The Use Of Passive Damping As Augmentation To The Active Control Of Flexible Structures, Joseph Vincent Harrell

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One challenge of modern control technology is how to control a flexible structure with accuracy, speed, and economy of effort. Controlling a structure with many degrees of freedom by purely active means implies the implementation of inordinate sensors and actuators and creates the need for numerous calculations that must be done instantly. Experiments have shown that practical structures under active control alone can suffer instabilities due to modal vibrations beyond the bandwidth of the active controller. Furthermore, if there is a high degree of model uncertainty, instabilities can be produced by inputs of modal vibrations not occurring in the system …

A Magnetic Suspension System With A Large Angular Range, Colin P. Britcher, Mehran Ghofrani Jan 1993

A Magnetic Suspension System With A Large Angular Range, Colin P. Britcher, Mehran Ghofrani

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In order to explore and develop technology required for the magnetic suspension of objects over large ranges of orientation, a small-scale laboratory system, the large-angle magnetic suspension test fixture (LAMSTF) has been constructed at NASA Langley Research Center. This apparatus falls into the category of large-gap, actively stabilized magnetic levitation systems. The hardware comprises five conventional electromagnets in a circular arrangement, each driven from a separate bipolar power amplifier. Electromagnet currents are commanded by a digital control system, implemented on a microcomputer, which in turn derives the position and attitude of the suspended element from an infrared optical system. The …

Glow-Discharge Enhanced Permeation Of Oxygen Through Silver, D. Wu, R. A. Outlaw, Robert L. Ash Jan 1993

Glow-Discharge Enhanced Permeation Of Oxygen Through Silver, D. Wu, R. A. Outlaw, Robert L. Ash

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The permeation of oxygen through Ag0.05Zr over the temperature range of 300-650°C under glow-discharge conditions has been studied and compared to the permeation of thermally dissociated molecular oxygen. A low-energy dc glow-discharge in O2 has been employed which produced approximately 10% atoms. The permeation rate during the glow discharge was found to be much higher (a factor of ∼10) than without the glow discharge. The small fraction of oxygen atoms generated appears to dominate the permeation because of much higher solution probabilities. Below 500°C, the activation energy for the permeation with glow discharge was found to be 15.5 kcal/mol …

Temporal Development Of Electric Field Structures In Photoconductive Gaas Switches, K. H. Schoenbach, J. S. Kenney, F.E. Peterkin, R. J. Allen Jan 1993

Temporal Development Of Electric Field Structures In Photoconductive Gaas Switches, K. H. Schoenbach, J. S. Kenney, F.E. Peterkin, R. J. Allen

Bioelectrics Publications

The temporal development of the electric field distribution in semi‐insulating GaAs photoconductive switches operated in the linear and lock‐on mode has been studied. The field structure was obtained by recording a change in the absorption pattern of the switch due to the Franz–Keldysh effect at a wavelength near the band edge of GaAs. In the linear mode, a high field layer develops at the cathode contact after laser activation. With increasing applied voltage, domainlike structures become visible in the anode region and the switch transits into the lock‐on state, a permanent filamentary electrical discharge. Calibration measurements show the field intensity …

Superheating Of Bi(0001), E. A. Murphy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, J. W. Herman Jan 1993

Superheating Of Bi(0001), E. A. Murphy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, J. W. Herman

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Superheating of Bi(0001) by about 90 K above the bulk melting temperature is observed using time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction with ∼200-ps time resolution. Larger temperature excursions above the bulk melting temperature result in melting accompanied by irreversible laser damage to the surface. The rhombohedral structure of Bi leads to very different behavior of material parameters upon melting as compared with fcc metals. Therefore, our observation of the superheating of Bi(0001), together with the previously observed superheating of Pb(111), suggests the generality of the superheating phenomenon.

Direct Measurements Of The Transport Of Nonequilibrium Electrons In Gold Films With Different Crystal Structures, T. Juhasz, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, G. O. Smith, C. Suárez, W. E. Bron Jan 1993

Direct Measurements Of The Transport Of Nonequilibrium Electrons In Gold Films With Different Crystal Structures, T. Juhasz, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, G. O. Smith, C. Suárez, W. E. Bron

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The transport of femtosecond-laser-excited nonequilibrium electrons across polycrystalline and single-crystalline gold films has been investigated through time-of-flight measurements. The thicknesses of the films range from 25 to 400 nm. Ballistic electrons as well as electrons interacting with other electrons and/or with the lattice have been observed. The ballistic component dominates the transport in the thinner films, whereas the interactive transport mechanism is dominant at the upper end of the thickness range. A slower effective velocity of the interactive component is observed in the polycrystalline samples, and is assumed to arise from the presence of grain boundaries. The reflection coefficient of …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

A systems engineering approach to the development of a radically different kind of surface combatant ship is presented, followed by a preliminary design of the ship shown by the analysis to be most effective. The requirement for the project was the development of a ship which would provide a major increase in the missile firepower of a battlegroup. The study conducts an analysis of four warfare scenarios and evaluates the effectiveness of replacing some Aegis ships with the missile carrier (CMX) and examines the relative utility of varying missile loads for the CMX. An alternative is chosen for further development …

Design And Implementation Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers. Thesis Final Report, 27 July 1992 - 1 January 1993, Osama A. Abihana, Oscar R. Gonzalez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The main objectives of our research are to present a self-contained overview of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, develop a methodology for control system design using fuzzy logic controllers, and to design and implement a fuzzy logic controller for a real system. We first present the fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy sets and basic fuzzy operations are defined. In addition, for control systems, it is important to understand the concepts of linguistic values, term sets, fuzzy rule base, inference methods, and defuzzification methods. Second, we introduce a four-step fuzzy logic control system design procedure. The design …

A Comparison Of Queueing, Cluster And Distributed Computing Systems, Joseph A. Kaplan, Michael L. Nelson Jan 1993

A Comparison Of Queueing, Cluster And Distributed Computing Systems, Joseph A. Kaplan, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Using workstation clusters for distributed computing has become popular with the proliferation of inexpensive, powerful workstations. Workstation clusters offer both a cost effective alternative to batch processing and an easy entry into parallel computing. However, a number of workstations on a network does not constitute a cluster. Cluster management software is necessary to harness the collective computing power. A variety of cluster management and queuing systems are compared: Distributed Queueing Systems (DQS), Condor, Load Leveler, Load Balancer, Load Sharing Facility (LSF - formerly Utopia), Distributed Job Manager (DJM), Computing in Distributed Networked Environments (CODINE), and NQS/Exec. The systems differ in …

NASA Langley Research Center has developed a library that allows Intel NX message passing codes to be executed under the more popular and widely supported Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) message passing library. PVM was developed at Oak Ridge National Labs and has become the defacto standard for message passing. This library will allow the many programs that were developed on the Intel iPSC/860 or Intel Paragon in a Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) design to be ported to the numerous architectures that PVM (version 3.2) supports. Also, the library adds global operations capability to PVM. A familiarity with Intel NX …

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke Jan 1993

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In electronic systems, it is interesting to understand exactly how the reliability is changing with time. Dynamic performance changes when a system passes from infant mortality stage into useful life phase and when the system passes from useful life phase into wearout phase. Dynamic performance also changes when the system is redesigned or when the system is acted on by a number of other outside forces such as a change in maintenance policy, escalation of alignment problems, or a change in training program. It is important to know when a system is changing dynamically in order to assess design, policy …

A Fracture Mechanics Analysis Of A 38 Inch Diameter Hot Pressed Beryllium Telescope Mirror, Phillip L. Brown Oct 1992

A Fracture Mechanics Analysis Of A 38 Inch Diameter Hot Pressed Beryllium Telescope Mirror, Phillip L. Brown

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A 38 inch diameter hot pressed beryllium telescope mirror was analyzed for structural integrity using finite-element modeling and a fracture mechanics analysis program, ZIP3D, developed for three-dimensional (3-0) solid and cracked bodies. The calculation of stress and mixed-mode fracture mechanics parameters for the mirror critical stress area was the objective of the mirror analysis.

Finite-element modeling for ZIP3D solution was performed in two stages. The first stage modeling modeled the mirror configuration on a global basis for calculation of accurate nodal displacements. The second stage modeling reduced the modeled mirror configuration to a set of localized models for calculation of …

Analysis Of Heat Pump Cycles Using Thermodynamic Equations Of State, Stephen C. Ericson Oct 1992

Analysis Of Heat Pump Cycles Using Thermodynamic Equations Of State, Stephen C. Ericson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this study, thermal performance of heat pump cycles is analyzed by employing several equations of state. The analysis presented here is particularly useful for applications where refrigerant properties need to be calculated from a thermodynamic equation of state. Such a situation, for example, would arise during a long-term numerical simulation of a solar-assisted heat pump system. In these cases, the direct use of thermodynamic property tables of refrigerants would not be possible in a computational procedure. The approach of using equations of state to predict thermodynamic properties is also useful for applications where new refrigerants or blends of refrigerants …

Elastic Buckling Of Stiffened Composite Curved Panels, Navin R. R. Jaunky Oct 1992

Elastic Buckling Of Stiffened Composite Curved Panels, Navin R. R. Jaunky

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Continuous filament grid-stiffened structure is a stiffening concept that combines structural efficiency and damage tolerance. However, buckle resistant design of such structures using finite elements methods is expensive and time consuming. An analytical model of a general grid stiffened structure is developed using a smeared theory with a first order shear deformation theory to account for transverse shear flexibilities. The solution for buckling of a simply supported panel subjected to combined loading is developed using energy method and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The smeared theory results are compared with finite element results. The results smeared theory compare well with the finite …

Retention Of Cellular Viability And Growth Potential In Cryopreserved Bovine Arterial Tissue: Implications For Clinical Use Of Cryopreserved Vascular Allografts, Kip G. Gardner Oct 1992

Retention Of Cellular Viability And Growth Potential In Cryopreserved Bovine Arterial Tissue: Implications For Clinical Use Of Cryopreserved Vascular Allografts, Kip G. Gardner

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Segments of bovine calf aortas and pulmonary arteries were cryopreserved at -196° C for two weeks to 18 months and subsequently thawed. Cellular morphology, viability, and growth potential in these segments were then compared with the same attributes in segments from fresh (control) arteries. Scanning electron microscopy revealed no disruption of intimal surfaces attributable to cryopreservation. Endothelial cells were successfully cultured from all cryopreserved arterial segments. Endothelial monolayers grown from cryopreserved arteries had a cobblestone appearance and expressed Factor VIII antigen but not smooth muscle alpha-actin. Plating efficiency in primary cultures of endothelial cells was lower for cryopreserved arteries than …

Transient Simulation Of A Trombe Wall Passive Heating System Coupled To A Thermally Stratified Room, Ali Saleh Kheireddine Oct 1992

Transient Simulation Of A Trombe Wall Passive Heating System Coupled To A Thermally Stratified Room, Ali Saleh Kheireddine

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Thermal performance of a Trombe-wall space heating system has been studied numerically for one-day and multiple-day periods. This study analyzes the system performance by simultaneously considering the coupled nature of the channel convection, wall heat conduction and transient room energy balance. A computer program has been written and implemented to assess the effects of system parameters, weather conditions and peak temperature control strategies on the system performance.

The system performance is influenced by such system parameters as the storage wall thickness, channel width and the temperature stratification in the room. Increasing the wall thickness decreases the temperature swings considerably, but …

The Effect Of Contacts On The Performance Of Electron-Beam Controlled Gaas And Diamond Switches, Michael Kevin Kennedy Oct 1992

The Effect Of Contacts On The Performance Of Electron-Beam Controlled Gaas And Diamond Switches, Michael Kevin Kennedy

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The performance of GaAs and diamond as electron-beam controlled closing and opening switches has been studied. An emphasis has been placed on the effect of contacts on the current-voltage characteristics. The two materials studied were GaAs and diamond. Using the same semi-insulating GaAs wafer as a source of material, a bulk device and a p-i-n device have been fabricated and compared. The asymmetry of the pin diode allows operation at higher voltage because of the ability to suppress the lock-on effect. Whereas GaAs was ionized through cathodoluminescence; diamond, in the form of thin films, has been directly ionized by the …

An Application Of Neural Networks In Data Communication Real-Time Resource Reallocation, Qing Fan Jul 1992

An Application Of Neural Networks In Data Communication Real-Time Resource Reallocation, Qing Fan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents an application of artificial neural networks in real-time resource reallocation, a methodology used in the implementation of an intelligent interface node in the Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. In particular, the problem is formulated using a Hopfield neural network model. The real-time reallocation problem is mapped into a two-dimensional matrix of neurons similar to Hopfield and Tank's approach to the traveling salesman problem (TSP) . An energy function is formulated in terms of the hard constraints and the solution cost. The interconnection weights and the input biases are determined by the energy function. It is shown through …

A Novel Technique For Deep Level Characterization Of High-Resistivity Semiconductor Materials, Sridhar Panigrahi Jul 1992

A Novel Technique For Deep Level Characterization Of High-Resistivity Semiconductor Materials, Sridhar Panigrahi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An improved photo induced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) technique is developed for studying deep level parameters in high-resistivity semiconductor materials. A new digital data acquisition approach and improvement in the cryogenics of the system have enabled us, for the first time in our laboratory, to detect CuA level in a copper doped silicon compensated gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) sample. The digital approach improves both the signal to noise ratio (S/N) and the efficiency of the system. Also, multiple PICTS spectra in a single thermal cycle can be obtained. In the present work, various doped and undoped gallium arsenide ( GaAs) and …

Design Considerations For An Astronaut Monorail System For Large Space Structures And The Structural Characterization Of Its Positioning Arm, Judith J. Watson Jul 1992

Design Considerations For An Astronaut Monorail System For Large Space Structures And The Structural Characterization Of Its Positioning Arm, Judith J. Watson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An astronaut monorail system (AMS) is presented as a vehicle to transport and position EV A astronauts along large space truss structures. The AMS is proposed specifically as an alternative to the crew and equipment transfer aid for Space Station Freedom. Design considerations for the AMS were discussed and a reference configuration was selected for the study. Equations were developed to characterize the stiffness and frequency behavior of the AMS positioning arm. Experimental data showed that these equations gave an fairly accurate representation of the stiffness and frequency behavior of the arm. A study was presented to show trends for …

Text-Independent Automatic Speaker Identification Using Partitioned Neural Networks, Laszlo Rudasi Jul 1992

Text-Independent Automatic Speaker Identification Using Partitioned Neural Networks, Laszlo Rudasi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation introduces a binary partitioned approach to statistical pattern classification which is applied to talker identification using neural networks. In recent years artificial neural networks have been shown to work exceptionally well for small but difficult pattern classification tasks. However, their application to large tasks (i.e., having more than ten to 20 categories) is limited by a dramatic increase in required training time. The time required to train a single network to perform N-way classification is nearly proportional to the exponential of N. In contrast, the binary partitioned approach requires training times on the order of N2. …

Laminar And Turbulent Natural Convection Heat Transfer In Trombe Wall Channels, Tony D. T. Chen Jul 1992

Laminar And Turbulent Natural Convection Heat Transfer In Trombe Wall Channels, Tony D. T. Chen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The natural convective heat transfer and air movement in a Trombe wall solar passive system has been studied analytically and numerically. Three Trombe wall channel geometries including the parallel channel with axial inlet and exit, parallel channel with side vents and Trombe wall channel coupled to the room have been considered. Several models representing these Trombe wall geometries have been formulated. For the parallel channel with axial inlet and exit geometry, a momentum-integral method has been used to solve parabolic governing equations for two-dimensional laminar flow. This formulation leads to a second order ordinary differential equation for pressure defect in …

Runge-Kutta Upwind Multigrid Multi-Block Three-Dimensional Thin Layer Navier-Stokes Solver, Frank E. Cannizzaro Jul 1992

Runge-Kutta Upwind Multigrid Multi-Block Three-Dimensional Thin Layer Navier-Stokes Solver, Frank E. Cannizzaro

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A state-of-the-art computer code has been developed that incorporates a modified Runge-Kutta time integration scheme, Upwind numerical techniques, Multigrid acceleration, and Multi-block capabilities (RUMM). A three-dimensional thin-layer formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is employed. For turbulent flow cases, the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model is used. Two different upwind techniques are available, van Leer's flux-vector splitting and Roe's flux-difference splitting. Full approximation multigrid plus implicit residual and corrector smoothing were implemented to enhance the rate of convergence. Multi-block capabilities were developed to provide geometric flexibility. This feature allows the developed computer code to accommodate any grid topology or grid configuration with …

Experimental Investigation Of Crossflow Instability Waves In Rotating Disk Flow, Alan E. Blanchard Jul 1992

Experimental Investigation Of Crossflow Instability Waves In Rotating Disk Flow, Alan E. Blanchard

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

For the past 40 years, the crossflow (or inflectional) instability associated with rotating disk flow has been generally assumed to be a pure vortex that is fixed with respect to the disk; however, the terms "wave" and "vortex" have also been used interchangeably throughout the computational and experimental literature to describe this instability. Through the use of both hot-wire surveys and smoke-wire flow visualizations in the present investigation, the existence of crossflow instability waves prior to vortex formation has been shown. The results of the hot-wire surveys and smoke-wire flow visualizations for both a "clean" disk case and a disk …

Dynamics And Control Of A Five Degree-Of-Freedom Magnetic Suspension System, Anwar Mohammed Haj Jul 1992

Dynamics And Control Of A Five Degree-Of-Freedom Magnetic Suspension System, Anwar Mohammed Haj

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A large-gap magnetic suspension system with five degrees-of-freedom is presented. The system is multi-input multi-output with coupling between degrees-of-freedom. Simulation was performed on this multi degree-of-freedom system in order to control each degree-of-freedom separately. Two types of controllers are considered by adding white noise to a single degree-of-freedom system in order to test their behavior and determine which is the best choice for the system. The responses of the system are produced in continuous and discrete time where a sample interval and delay time was introduced. Using these responses, a comparison between each degree-of-freedom was made and the maximum value …

Analysis Of Impact Damage Of Composite Laminates Using Five-Point Bending, Mark Edward Robeson Jul 1992

Analysis Of Impact Damage Of Composite Laminates Using Five-Point Bending, Mark Edward Robeson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The low-velocity impact of composite laminates can induce high transverse shear strains, resulting in severe damage within the laminate. This type of damage may be studied in a quasi-static manner by use of a multi-span beam shear test in five-point bending configuration. A five-point bending arrangement induces high transverse shear strains in sections of the laminate, causing failures, such as intraply cracks and delaminations, that are similar to those caused by low-velocity impact. Stress distributions in the laminate can be calculated using a potential energy approach, and these stress distributions can be correlated with failure locations in the five-point bending …
