Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composite Beam Stability And Load And Resistance Factor Design Approach, Mojtaba B. Sirjani Apr 1998

Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composite Beam Stability And Load And Resistance Factor Design Approach, Mojtaba B. Sirjani

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) structural members are rapidly gaining impetus in civil engineering applications. Also, thin-walled open beams with I-shaped, channel, and other types of sections are of practical importance to both structural analysts and designers. This dissertation presents the outcome of a detailed experimental and theoretical investigation of the strength and stability of FRP composite beams. Three- and four-point loading tests are conducted on FRP I- and channel section beams. The behavior of these beams is studied under gradually increasing static loads up to the maximum load-carrying capacity corresponding to either material cracking or flexural-torsional instability. First, the theoretical …

Experimental Geometry Optimization Techniques For Multi-Element Airfoils, Drew Landman Apr 1998

Experimental Geometry Optimization Techniques For Multi-Element Airfoils, Drew Landman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A study is reported on geometry optimization techniques for high-lift airfoils. A modern three-element airfoil model with a remotely actuated flap was designed, tested, and used in wind tunnel experiments to investigate optimum flap positioning based on lift. All the results presented were obtained in the Old Dominion University low-speed wind tunnel. Detailed results for lift coefficient versus flap vertical and horizontal position are presented for two airfoil angles-of-attack: 8 and 14 degrees. Three automated optimization simulations, the method of steepest ascent and two variants of the sequential simplex method, were demonstrated using experimental data. An on-line optimizer was demonstrated …

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen Apr 1998

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The understanding and acceptance of remotely sensed atmospheric data depends strongly on the steps taken to characterize experiment error and validate observations through comparisons to other independent measurements. A formal error analysis of the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE II) water vapor operational inversion algorithm is performed and compared to previous results. Random measurement errors were characterized by segmented least-squares profile fitting of the slant path absorption which found the error to be uncorrelated in the stratosphere with estimated variances significantly smaller than expected from 18-30 km. Estimates of null space error were developed from radiosonde hygrometers in …

Sparse Equation-Eigen Solvers For Symmetric/Unsymmetric Positive-Negative-Indefinite Matrices With Finite Element And Linear Programming Applications, Hakakizumwami Birali Runesha Apr 1998

Sparse Equation-Eigen Solvers For Symmetric/Unsymmetric Positive-Negative-Indefinite Matrices With Finite Element And Linear Programming Applications, Hakakizumwami Birali Runesha

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Vectorized sparse solvers for direct solutions of positive-negative-indefinite symmetric systems of linear equations and eigen-equations are developed. Sparse storage schemes, re-ordering, symbolic factorization and numerical factorization algorithms are discussed. Loop unrolling techniques are also incorporated in the coding to enhance the vector speed. In the indefinite solver, which employs various pivoting strategies, a simple rotation matrix is introduced to simplify the computer implementation. Efficient usage of the incore memory is accomplished by the proposed "restart memory management" schemes. A sparse version of the Interior Point Method, IPM, has also been implemented that incorporates the developed indefinite sparse solver for linear …

Emission Of Excimer Radiation From Direct Current, High-Pressure Hollow Cathode Discharge, Ahmed El-Habachi, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 1998

Emission Of Excimer Radiation From Direct Current, High-Pressure Hollow Cathode Discharge, Ahmed El-Habachi, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A novel, nonequilibrium, high-pressure, direct current discharge, the microhollow cathode discharge, has been found to be an intense source of xenon and argon excimer radiation peaking at wavelengths of 170 and 130 nm, respectively. In argon discharges with a 100 μm diam hollow cathode, the intensity of the excimer radiation increased by a factor of 5 over the pressure range from 100 to 800 mbar. In xenon discharges, the intensity at 170 nm increased by two orders of magnitude when the pressure was raised from 250 mbar to 1 bar. Sustaining voltages were 200 V for argon and 400 V …

Generation Of Intense Excimer Radiation From High-Pressure Hollow Cathode Discharges, Ahmed El-Habachi, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 1998

Generation Of Intense Excimer Radiation From High-Pressure Hollow Cathode Discharges, Ahmed El-Habachi, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

By reducing the diameter of the cathode opening in a hollow cathode discharge geometry to values on the order of 100 μm, we were able to operate these discharges in noble gases in a direct current mode up to atmospheric pressure. High-pressure discharges in xenon were found to be strong sources of excimer radiation. Highest intensities at a wavelength of 172 nm were obtained at a pressure of 400 Torr. At this pressure, the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiant power of a single discharge operating at a forward voltage of 220 V and currents exceeding 2 mA reaches values between 6% …

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda Jan 1998

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel approach based on the second law of thermodynamics is developed to investigate the psychophysiology and quantify human stress level. Two types of stresses (thermal and mental) are examined. A Unified Stress Response Theory (USRT) is developed under the new proposed field of study called Engineering Psychophysiology. The USRT is used to investigate both thermal and mental stresses from a holistic (human body as a whole) and thermodynamic viewpoint. The original concepts and definitions are established as postulates which form the basis for thermodynamic approach to quantify human stress level. An Objective Thermal Stress Index (OTSI) is developed by …

An Alternative Method For Determining Adjusted Function Points As The Basis For Software Cost Estimating, William Alexander Eldred Jan 1998

An Alternative Method For Determining Adjusted Function Points As The Basis For Software Cost Estimating, William Alexander Eldred

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

As software costs become an increasingly higher percentage of total computer system costs, it becomes increasingly more important for software development managers to have the ability to predict development costs with reasonable accuracy early in the software development cycle. Software development cost estimates are based in large measure on software size. Function points are considered by many to be a de facto industry standard as a size metric. The function points technique, unlike lines-of-code, can be applied early in the software development cycle and is language independent. Critics claim that the function point “value adjustment factor,” which purports to capture …

Evaluation Of Toxicity, Bioavailability And Speciation Of Lead, Zinc And Cadmium In Mine/Mill Wastewaters, Mujde Erten-Unal, Bobby G. Wixson, Nord Gale, Jerry L. Pitt Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Toxicity, Bioavailability And Speciation Of Lead, Zinc And Cadmium In Mine/Mill Wastewaters, Mujde Erten-Unal, Bobby G. Wixson, Nord Gale, Jerry L. Pitt

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The toxicity of common compounds of lead, cadmium and zinc was evaluated in waters similar to that found in the world's largest lead producing area in Missouri. Static, acute toxicity tests were performed using fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and water fleas (Daphnia magna) respectively. Test organisms were subjected to varying amounts of sulfide, carbonate, chloride and sulfate salts of lead, zinc and cadmium mixed in hard, alkaline waters typical to this region. Median lethal concentrations were calculated using nominal versus measured metal concentrations. Measured metal concentrations included four different metal fractionation (extraction/filtration) techniques at different pH …

Femtosecond Photoemission Study Of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics In Single-Crystal Au(111) Films, J. Cao, Y. Gao, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, R. J. D. Miller, D. A. Mantell Jan 1998

Femtosecond Photoemission Study Of Ultrafast Electron Dynamics In Single-Crystal Au(111) Films, J. Cao, Y. Gao, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, R. J. D. Miller, D. A. Mantell

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The energy-dependent relaxation of photoexcited electrons has been measured by time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy on single-crystal Au(111) films with thickness ranging from 150 to 3000 Å. It is found that the energy-dependent relaxation does not show any significant thickness dependence, which indicates that electron transport is a much slower dynamical process in the near-surface region than expected from bulk properties. Furthermore, lifetimes of the photoexcited electrons can be fitted well by the Fermi-liquid theory with a scaling factor plus an effective upper lifetime. This observation enables separation of electron-electron scattering, and to a lesser extent electron-phonon scattering, processes from electron-transport …

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning Of Inp(100) For Preparation Of A Negative Electron Affinity Photocathode, K. A. Elamrawi, M. A. Hafez, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1998

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning Of Inp(100) For Preparation Of A Negative Electron Affinity Photocathode, K. A. Elamrawi, M. A. Hafez, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Atomic hydrogen cleaning is used to clean InP(100) negative electron affinity photocathodes. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns of reconstructed, phosphorus-stabilized, InP(100) surfaces are obtained after cleaning at ∼400 °C. These surfaces produce high quantum efficiency photocathodes (∼8.5%), in response to 632.8 nm light. Without atomic hydrogen cleaning, activation of InP to negative electron affinity requires heating to ∼530 °C. At this high temperature, phosphorus evaporates preferentially and a rough surface is obtained. These surfaces produce low quantum efficiency photocathodes (∼0.1%). The use of reflection high-energy electron diffraction to measure the thickness of the deposited cesium layer during activation by correlating …

Modeling Electromagnetic Disturbances In Closed-Loop Computer Controlled Flight Systems, W. Steven Gray, Oscar R. Gonzalez Jan 1998

Modeling Electromagnetic Disturbances In Closed-Loop Computer Controlled Flight Systems, W. Steven Gray, Oscar R. Gonzalez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

High intensity electromagnetic radiation has been demonstrated to be a source of computer upsets in commercially available digital flight control systems. In this paper we introduce an electromagnetic disturbance model which can be used for stability analysis and augmentation of any such digitally implemented control law. The model is composed of a Markovian exosystem supplying radiation events to a discrete-time jump linear system which models how the radiation interferes with the nominal operation of the closed-loop system. We discuss how this model can be used to characterize stability and how it can be parametrized and validated in an experimental setting.

Temperature Dependence Of Step Density On Vicinal Pb(111), Z. H. Zhang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1998

Temperature Dependence Of Step Density On Vicinal Pb(111), Z. H. Zhang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The temperature dependence of step density on the vicinal Pb(111) surface is investigated using reflection high-energy electron diffraction. When the temperature is increased from 323 to 590 K. the average terrace width and the average string length at the step edge decrease from 85±25 to 37±16 Å and from 220±33 to 25±8 Å, respectively. Thermal step collapse on the Pb(111) surface near its bulk melting temperature is not observed. Above 530±7 K, the change in the string length at the step edge with temperature becomes small, and the intensity of the (00) beam is significantly decreased. We conclude that partial …

Surface Morphology Of Laser-Superheated Pb(111) And Pb(100), Z. H. Zhang, Bo Lin, X. L. Zeng, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1998

Surface Morphology Of Laser-Superheated Pb(111) And Pb(100), Z. H. Zhang, Bo Lin, X. L. Zeng, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The surface step density on the vicinal Pb(111) and the surface vacancy density on Pb(100) after laser superheating and melting are investigated using reflection high-energy electron diffraction. With ∼100-ps laser pulses, Pb(111) surface superheating does not significantly change the density of the steps and step-edge roughness. However, after laser surface melting, the average terrace width and the string length at the step edge become as large as those at room temperature. The average terrace width at 573 K changes from 38±15 to 64±19 Å after laser surface melting, while the average string length at the step edge changes from 90±14 …

Buckets: Aggregative, Intelligent Agents For Publishing, Michael L. Nelson, Kurt Maly, Stewart N. T. Shen, Mohammad Zubair Jan 1998

Buckets: Aggregative, Intelligent Agents For Publishing, Michael L. Nelson, Kurt Maly, Stewart N. T. Shen, Mohammad Zubair

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Buckets are an aggregative, intelligent construct for publishing in digital libraries. The goal of research projects is to produce information. This information is often instantiated in several forms, differentiated by semantic types (report, software, video, datasets, etc.). A given semantic type can be further differentiated by syntactic representations as well (PostScript version, PDF version, Word version, etc.). Although the information was created together and subtle relationships can exist between them, different semantic instantiations are generally segregated along currently obsolete media boundaries. Reports are placed in report archives, software might go into a software archive, but most of the data and …

Creating A Canonical Scientific And Technical Information Classification System For Ncstrl+, Melissa E. Tiffany, Michael L. Nelson Jan 1998

Creating A Canonical Scientific And Technical Information Classification System For Ncstrl+, Melissa E. Tiffany, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to describe the new subject classification system for the NCSTRL+ project. NCSTRL+ is a canonical digital library (DL) based on the Networked Computer Science Technical Report Library (NCSTRL). The current NCSTRL+ classification system uses the NASA Scientific and Technical (STI) subject classifications, which has a bias towards the aerospace, aeronautics, and engineering disciplines. Examination of other scientific and technical information classification systems showed similar discipline-centric weaknesses. Traditional, library-oriented classification systems represented all disciplines, but were too generalized to serve the needs of a scientific and technically oriented digital library. Lack of a suitable existing …

Placement Of Piezoelectric Actuators For Active Control Of Vibration Using Modal Parameters, Xuegeng Zhu Jan 1998

Placement Of Piezoelectric Actuators For Active Control Of Vibration Using Modal Parameters, Xuegeng Zhu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An equation is derived to model the piezoelectric actuators incorporation with flexible structures. This equation permits the comparison of the performance indices over the entire structure for a piezoelectric actuator with constant area, which is unachievable if the Finite Element Method is used for complicated structures.

An index has been developed for placement of piezoelectric actuator for control of vibration of a flexible structure. This index is derived from the definition of H2norm. Computation of the proposed index requires only the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the structures of interest. The method is well suited to large …

Formal Specification Of Fragmentation And Reassembly In Ipv6, Ibrahim Sahin Oct 1997

Formal Specification Of Fragmentation And Reassembly In Ipv6, Ibrahim Sahin

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development and implementation of a networking standard such as the new Internet Protocol (IPv6) is a very difficult process. Different implementations of the standard must be fully compatible to allow different computers to communicate with each other. However, standards are often ambiguous, frequently a result of providing specifications in the English language. A more formal specification could assist in the design of systems. This thesis demonstrates that capability using the Prototype Verification System (PVS).

In this thesis study, a formal specification for fragmentation and reassembly in IPv6 was created to provide a tool for the standardization of IPv6 using PVS. …

Flexural Behavior Of Thermoplastic Beams With And Without Frp Reinforcement, Hilmi Coskun Oct 1997

Flexural Behavior Of Thermoplastic Beams With And Without Frp Reinforcement, Hilmi Coskun

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the flexural behavior of thermoplastic beams with and without fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) rebars. Tests are conducted on commercially available thermoplastic beams known as Seatimber. The normal stress-strain relations of both the thermoplastic material and FRP rebars are obtained in tension and compression experimentally. These mechanical property curves are then used as part of the input for developing the theoretical moment-curvature relations using an iterative equilibrium procedure. The moment-curvature relations are in turn used for predicting the beam load-deflection curves via the central finite-difference procedure. Behavior predictions are made …

A Proposed Approach To Iso Compliance And Validation For Metrology Laboratories, J. Lyle Bagley Oct 1997

A Proposed Approach To Iso Compliance And Validation For Metrology Laboratories, J. Lyle Bagley

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

International competition among metrology laboratories, as well as their customers, has intensified the incentive to seek either accreditation to ISO Guide 25 or ISO 9000 quality system registration for the laboratory. The debate continues as to which is more beneficial to the laboratory and its customers once the decision is made to pursue one or the other. This study addresses the advantages and limitations of each, and how best to prepare for complying with ISO standards. The literature was reviewed and ISO certification experts were questioned about these issues. The results were combined with new applications of existing operations research …

Thermal And Mechanical Behavior Of Cryogenic Propellant Tank Concepts For Advanced Launch Vehicles, H. Kevin Rivers Oct 1997

Thermal And Mechanical Behavior Of Cryogenic Propellant Tank Concepts For Advanced Launch Vehicles, H. Kevin Rivers

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An important step in developing a cost-effective, fully-reusable, launch vehicle is the development of durable, lightweight, insulated, cryogenic propellant tanks. Current cryogenic tanks are expendable, and much of the technology that exist is not usable on future vehicles. As part of the Reusable Launch Vehicle/ X-33 Program, an experimental apparatus for evaluating the effects of both thermal and mechanical loading on cryogenic-tank concepts was developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. Studies to determine the behavior of various liquid-oxygen- and liquid-hydrogen-tank concepts under simulated mission conditions were performed as part of this research and are reported. Selected analytical studies of …

Minimizing Post-Production Weight Growth In Tanks Using A Decision Analysis Model, Michael F. Cochrane Oct 1997

Minimizing Post-Production Weight Growth In Tanks Using A Decision Analysis Model, Michael F. Cochrane

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Post-production weight growth of tanks is an historic problem for the military. Tanks are difficult to transport because of their weight, and post-production modifications tend to cause this weight to increase over the lifecycle of the tank. In this thesis, a computer model is constructed which uses influence diagrams to model tank weight growth as a probabilistic process. Historical weight data for the MI Abrams tank program is used to derive probabilities for the model. The model is used to predict tank weight growth over both the short and long term with the goal of understanding more about how and …

Selective Cvd Growth Of Diamond Crystals On Tungsten, Charles Randal Cole Oct 1997

Selective Cvd Growth Of Diamond Crystals On Tungsten, Charles Randal Cole

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Typical field emitters consist of sharp metal tips which usually have a short life due to erosion and contamination. To improve the performance of regular field emitters, diamond can be placed on the emitter tip. This is done by selectively growing diamond on tungsten tips using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processing. Diamond exhibits negative electron affinity, so that electrons will be emitted by properly biasing the tip.

To obtain single crystal growth right at the tip, a cantilever controlled nucleation method was developed which worked better than other methods. Surface preparation was also important to the growth process. An oxide …

High-Order Finite-Difference Schemes And Their Application To Computational Acoustics, Joe Leo Manthey Jul 1997

High-Order Finite-Difference Schemes And Their Application To Computational Acoustics, Joe Leo Manthey

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The primary focus of this study is upon the numerical stability of high-order finite-difference schemes and their application to duct acoustics. Since acoustic waves are known to be non-dissipative and non-dispersive, high-order schemes are favored for their low dissipation and low dispersion relative to the low-order schemes. The primary obstacle to the the development of explicit high-order finite-difference schemes is the construction of boundary closures which simultaneously maintain the formal order of accuracy and the numerical stability of the overall scheme. In this thesis a hybrid seven-point, fourth-order stencil for computing spatial derivatives is presented and the time stability is …

The Study Of Wave-Blocking And Current Effects On Nonlinear Interactions Of Shallow-Water Waves Using Advanced Boussinesq Models, Qin Chen Jul 1997

The Study Of Wave-Blocking And Current Effects On Nonlinear Interactions Of Shallow-Water Waves Using Advanced Boussinesq Models, Qin Chen

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The first part of this work focuses on the derivation of enhanced Boussinesq-type equations for the combined motion of waves and currents in shallow water areas.

The strategy proposed in this work is to couple two known methods which are the sponge layer concept suitable for short waves and Sommerfeld radiation condition for currents. This coupling method provides satisfactory non-reflective boundaries for the simulation of fully coupled wave/current motion as demonstrated by the numerical experiments. We verify the model against the well known solutions based on the existing theories and good agreement has been observed. The numerical results confirm the …

Reverse Engineering Of Aircraft Wing Data Using A Partial Differential Equation Surface Model, Jacalyn M. Huband Jul 1997

Reverse Engineering Of Aircraft Wing Data Using A Partial Differential Equation Surface Model, Jacalyn M. Huband

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Reverse engineering is a multi-step process used in industry to determine a production representation of an existing physical object. This representation is in the form of mathematical equations that are compatible with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) equipment. The four basic steps to the reverse engineering process are data acquisition, data separation, surface or curve fitting, and CAD/CAM production. The surface fitting step determines the design representation of the object, and thus is critical to the success or failure of the reverse engineering process. Although surface fitting methods described in the literature are used to model a variety of …

A Piezoresistive Metal Thin Film Tilt Sensor, Todd Allan Lindley Jul 1997

A Piezoresistive Metal Thin Film Tilt Sensor, Todd Allan Lindley

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Thin film strain gauges have many applications as transducers for monitoring pressure, vibration, and acceleration. In this thesis, a simple system, consisting of a Nichrome thin film strain gauge deposited on a glass substrate, is investigated in detail. Finite element analysis is used to model the expected sensor behavior. The substrate is shaped to exhibit a constant strain distribution, and is set up in a cantilever beam configuration. R. F. sputtering is used to deposit the Nichrome film, and the resistor pattern is transferred via photolithography. The gravitational force on a mass attached to the free end of the sensor …

Specification And Verification Of Generic Cell Rate Algorithms In Pvs, Huseyin Ozgungor Jul 1997

Specification And Verification Of Generic Cell Rate Algorithms In Pvs, Huseyin Ozgungor

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Formal verification methods have been considered as a powerful complementary approach to define standards and to prove correctness of the systems. In this work, formal specification of Generic Cell Rate Algorithms are defined and proved. The specification process enables standardization for constructing Generic Cell Rate Algorithms. Standardization is an important process in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. By employing formal methods, the necessary standards could be constructed to allow different algorithms to be employed which still meet system requirements. Those system requirements are quantified in the Quality of Service (QOS).

Congestion management is a vital concept for networks in …

A Comparison Between Simulated And Measured Free-Flight Vortex Encounter Behavior In The Nasa Langley Full-Scale Wind Tunnel, Robert A. Pfouts Jul 1997

A Comparison Between Simulated And Measured Free-Flight Vortex Encounter Behavior In The Nasa Langley Full-Scale Wind Tunnel, Robert A. Pfouts

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An examination of the use of static measurements in simulating dynamic aircraft wake encounters is presented. By comparing dynamic aircraft-wake vortex encounter measurements obtained in free-flight wind tunnel tests to data obtained from computer simulated encounters based on static wind tunnel data, a determination is made concerning the validity of static vortex models in a dynamic flight environment. The development and testing of specialized elements of a flight simulation code are presented and dynamic free-flight measurements and predicted results are compared.

This study shows that static modeling provides reasonable estimates for lateral encounter trajectories when the following aircraft model is …
