Automatic High-Fidelity 3d Road Network Modeling, Jie Wang Jul 2011

Automatic High-Fidelity 3d Road Network Modeling, Jie Wang

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Many computer applications such as racing games and driving simulations frequently make use of 3D high-fidelity road network models for a variety of purposes. However, there are very few existing methods for automatic generation of 3D realistic road networks, especially for those in the real world. On the other hand, vast road network GIS data have been collected in the past and used by a wide range of applications, such as navigation and evaluation. A method that can automatically produce 3D high-fidelity road network models from 2D real road GIS data will significantly reduce both the labor and time needed …

Statistical Optimizations Of Muscle Action Potentials Based On Modeling And Analysis Of Ion Channel Dynamics, Gyutae Kim Jul 2011

Statistical Optimizations Of Muscle Action Potentials Based On Modeling And Analysis Of Ion Channel Dynamics, Gyutae Kim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An Electromyogram (EMG) is an electrical signal, which is measured from a skeletal muscle during voluntary and involuntary contractions. EMGs are useful in interpreting pathological states of the musculoskeletal system. In particular, EMGs offer valuable information concerning the timing of muscular activity and its relative intensity. Various EMG models have developed with many different purposes from a pure mathematical model to a pattern structure model [17,46]. Sophisticated EMG models are necessary to examine the effects of small changes in muscular morphology and activities [46]. Due to the crucial importance of EMG models, all factors in the model should be precise …

The Tracking Performance Of Distributed Recoverable Flight Control Systems Subject To High Intensity Radiated Fields, Rui Wang Jul 2011

The Tracking Performance Of Distributed Recoverable Flight Control Systems Subject To High Intensity Radiated Fields, Rui Wang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

It is known that high intensity radiated fields (HIRF) can produce upsets in digital electronics, and thereby degrade the performance of digital flight control systems. Such upsets, either from natural or man-made sources, can change data values on digital buses and memory and affect CPU instruction execution. HIRF environments are also known to trigger common-mode faults, affecting nearly-simultaneously multiple fault containment regions, and hence reducing the benefits of n-modular redundancy and other fault-tolerant computing techniques. Thus, it is important to develop models which describe the integration of the embedded digital system, where the control law is implemented, as well …

Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For The Discrete Velocity Boltzmann-Bgk Equation, Elena Craig Jul 2011

Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For The Discrete Velocity Boltzmann-Bgk Equation, Elena Craig

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) absorbing boundary conditions were first proposed by Berenger in 1994 for the Maxwell's equations of electromagnetics. Since Hu first applied the method to Euler's equations in 1996, progress made in the application of PML to Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) includes linearized Euler equations with non-uniform mean flow, non-linear Euler equations, flows with an arbitrary mean flow direction, and non-linear clavier-Stokes equations. Although Boltzmann-BGK methods have appeared in the literature and have been shown capable of simulating aeroacoustics phenomena, very little has been done to develop absorbing boundary conditions for these methods. The purpose of this work was …

A Systemic Approach To Next Generation Infrastructure Data Elicitation And Planning Using Serious Gaming Methods, Ersin Ancel

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Infrastructure systems are vital to the functioning of our society and economy. However, these systems are increasingly complex and are more interdependent than ever, making them difficult to manage. In order to respond to increasing demand, environmental concerns, and natural and man-made threats, infrastructure systems have to adapt and transform. Traditional engineering design approaches and planning tools have proven to be inadequate when planning and managing these complex socio-technical system transitions. The design and implementation of next generation infrastructure systems require holistic methodologies, encompassing organizational and societal aspects in addition to technical factors. In order to do so, a serious …

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction Study Of The Dynamics Of Antimony Thin Films And Nanoparticles, Mahmoud Abdel-Fattah Jul 2011

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction Study Of The Dynamics Of Antimony Thin Films And Nanoparticles, Mahmoud Abdel-Fattah

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The ultrafast fast phenomena that take place following the application of a 120 fs laser pulse on 20 nm antimony thin films and 40 nm nanoparticles were studied using time-resolved electron diffraction. Samples are prepared by thermal evaporation, at small thickness (< 10 nm) antimony nanoparticles form while at larger thicknesses we get continuous thin films.

The samples are annealed and studied by static heating to determine their Debye temperatures, which were considerably less than the standard value. The thermal expansion under static heating also yielded the expansion coefficient of the sample material. Nanoparticle samples gave a very accurate thermal expansion coefficient (11 × 10-6 K-1).

Ultrafast time resolved electron diffraction …

Improving The Efficiency Of Organic Solar Cells By Varying The Material Concentration In The Photoactive Layer, Kevin Anthony Latimer

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells have been a rapidly improving technology over the past decade. To further improve the relatively low energy conversion efficiencies of these solar cells, several modifications need to be made to the overall device structure. Emerging technologies include cells that are fabricated with interfacial layers to facilitate charge transport, and tandem structures are being introduced to harness the absorption spectrum of polymers with varying bandgap energies.

When new structures are implemented, each layer of the cell must be optimized in order for the entire device to function efficiently. The most volatile layer of these devices is …

The Transfer Of Laser-Machined Micro-Structured Patterns From Silicon To Polymethyl Methacrylate, Warren E. Withrow

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research project's purpose was transferring a micro-scaled pattern from a silicon wafer to a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), or acrylic, substrate through light absorption generated heat. The secondary objective was to determine if the pattern on the silicon wafer could then be transferred to silica (i.e. a microscope glass slide) through light absorption generated heat. Once this pattern-transfer technique is developed for the micro scale, it could be instituted on the nano scale. The experiment was designed to find an alternate method to that currently being used to mass-produce compact discs (CDs). The most popular method employs a stamping process …

Ge QD formation on Si(100)-(2×1) with different substrate temperatures and excitation laser energy densities was studied. The excitation laser reduces the epitaxial growth temperature …

Using The Web Infrastructure For Real Time Recovery Of Missing Web Pages, Martin Klein Jul 2011

Using The Web Infrastructure For Real Time Recovery Of Missing Web Pages, Martin Klein

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Given the dynamic nature of the World Wide Web, missing web pages, or "404 Page not Found" responses, are part of our web browsing experience. It is our intuition that information on the web is rarely completely lost, it is just missing. In whole or in part, content often moves from one URI to another and hence it just needs to be (re-)discovered. We evaluate several methods for a \justin- time" approach to web page preservation. We investigate the suitability of lexical signatures and web page titles to rediscover missing content. It is understood that web pages change over time …

A Framework For Dynamic Traffic Monitoring Using Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks, Mohammad Hadi Arbabi Jul 2011

A Framework For Dynamic Traffic Monitoring Using Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks, Mohammad Hadi Arbabi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Traffic management centers (TMCs) need high-quality data regarding the status of roadways for monitoring and delivering up-to-date traffic conditions to the traveling public. Currently this data is measured at static points on the roadway using technologies that have significant maintenance requirements. To obtain an accurate picture of traffic on any road section at any time requires a real-time probe of vehicles traveling in that section. We envision a near-term future where network communication devices are commonly included in new vehicles. These devices will allow vehicles to form vehicular networks allowing communication among themselves, other vehicles, and roadside units (RSUs) to …

A Methodology To Repair Or Deorbit Leo Satellite Constellations, Goksel Gurgenburan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, mitigation of space debris is addressed by examining an approach for repair or de-orbit of a specific population of non-functional Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Basic orbital mechanics propagation of the orbits was used as the process for computing a solution to the time and intercept position for the targeted satellites. Optimal orbital maneuvers to reach the target satellites from a pre-established orbit were also considered. In this way minimum ΔV budget, rendezvous time and mass budgets were managed. The Clohessy-Wiltshire Equations and two-impulsive rendezvous maneuvers were used to determine the orbital path of a chase satellite …

Evaluation Of Delivery Conditions For Cutaneous Plasmid Electrotransfer Using A Multielectrode Array, Bernadette Ferraro, Loree C. Heller, Yolmari L. Cruz, Siqi Guo, Amy Donate, Richard Heller May 2011

Evaluation Of Delivery Conditions For Cutaneous Plasmid Electrotransfer Using A Multielectrode Array, Bernadette Ferraro, Loree C. Heller, Yolmari L. Cruz, Siqi Guo, Amy Donate, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

Electroporation (EP) is a simple in vivo method to deliver normally impermeable molecules, such as plasmid DNA, to a variety of tissues. Delivery of plasmid DNA by EP to a large surface area is not practical because the distance between the electrode pairs, and therefore the applied voltage, must be increased to effectively permeabilize the cell membrane. The design of the multielectrode array (MEA) incorporates multiple electrode pairs at a fixed distance to allow for delivery of plasmid DNA to the skin, potentially reducing the sensation associated with in vivo EP. In this report, we evaluate the effects of field …

Technology Independent Synthesis Of Cmos Operational Amplifiers, Praveen Koushik Meduri Apr 2011

Technology Independent Synthesis Of Cmos Operational Amplifiers, Praveen Koushik Meduri

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Analog circuit design does not enjoy as much automation as its digital counterpart. Analog sizing is inherently knowledge intensive and requires accurate modeling of the different parametric effects of the devices. Besides, the set of constraints in a typical analog design problem is large, involving complex tradeoffs. For these reasons, the task of modeling an analog design problem in a form viable for automation is much more tedious than the digital design. Consequently, analog blocks are still handcrafted intuitively and often become a bottleneck in the integrated circuit design, thereby increasing the time to market.

In this work, we address …

Synthesis Of Ald Zinc Oxide And Thin Film Materials Optimization For Uv Photodetector Applications, Kandabara Nouhoum Tapily Apr 2011

Synthesis Of Ald Zinc Oxide And Thin Film Materials Optimization For Uv Photodetector Applications, Kandabara Nouhoum Tapily

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a direct, wide bandgap semiconductor material. It is thermodynamically stable in the wurtzite structure at ambient temperature conditions. ZnO has very interesting optical and electrical properties and is a suitable candidate for numerous optoelectronic applications such as solar cells, LEDs and UV-photodetectors. ZnO is a naturally n-type semiconductor. Due to the lack of reproducible p-type ZnO, achieving good homojunction ZnO-based photodiodes such as UV-photodetectors remains a challenge. Meanwhile, heterojunction structures of ZnO with p-type substrates such as SiC, GaN, NiO, AlGaN, Si etc. are used; however, those heterojunction diodes suffer from low efficiencies. ZnO is an …

A Least Squares Closure Approximation For Liquid Crystalline Polymers, Traci Ann Sievenpiper Apr 2011

A Least Squares Closure Approximation For Liquid Crystalline Polymers, Traci Ann Sievenpiper

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

An introduction to existing closure schemes for the Doi-Hess kinetic theory of liquid crystalline polymers is provided. A new closure scheme is devised based on a least squares fit of a linear combination of the Doi, Tsuji-Rey, Hinch-Leal I, and Hinch-Leal II closure schemes. The orientation tensor and rate-of-strain tensor are fit separately using data generated from the kinetic solution of the Smoluchowski equation. The known behavior of the kinetic solution and existing closure schemes at equilibrium is compared with that of the new closure scheme. The performance of the proposed closure scheme in simple shear flow for a variety …

A Hybrid Lehmer Code Genetic Algorithm And Its Application On Traveling Salesman Problems, Jun Zhang Apr 2011

A Hybrid Lehmer Code Genetic Algorithm And Its Application On Traveling Salesman Problems, Jun Zhang

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Traveling Salesman Problems (TSP) is a widely studied combinatorial optimization problem. The goal of the TSP is to find a tour which begins in a specific city, visits each of the remaining cities once and returns to the initial cities such that the objective functions are optimized, typically involving minimizing functions like total distance traveled, total time used or total cost.

Genetic algorithms were first proposed by John Holland (1975). It uses an iterative procedure to find the optimal solutions to optimization problems.

This research proposed a hybrid Lehmer code Genetic Algorithm. To compensate for the weaknesses of traditional genetic …
