Split And Join: An Efficient Approach For Simulating Stapled Intestinal Anastomosis In Virtual Reality, Di Qi, Suvranu De

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Colorectal cancer is a life-threatening disease. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Stapled anastomosis is a rapid treatment for colorectal cancer and other intestinal diseases and has become an integral part of routine surgical practice. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no existing work simulating intestinal anastomosis that often involves sophisticated soft tissue manipulations such as cutting and stitching. In this paper, for the first time, we propose a novel split and join approach to simulate a side-to-side stapled intestinal anastomosis in virtual reality. We mimic the intestine model using …

Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) is One of the Most Challenging Tasks in Modelling Breath Analyzers Because of their Low Concentrations (Parts-Per-Billion (Ppb) to Parts-Per-Million (Ppm)) in Breath and the High Humidity Levels in Exhaled Breaths. the Refractive Index is One of the Crucial Optical Properties of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Which is Changeable Via the Variation of Gas Species and Concentrations that Can Be Utilized as Gas Detectors. Herein, for the First Time, We Used Lorentz–Lorentz, Maxwell–Ga, and Bruggeman Effective Medium Approximation (EMA) Equations to Compute the Percentage Change in the Index of Refraction (∆n%) of ZIF-7, ZIF-8, ZIF-90, …

On Refinements To Qmfd Based Chirp Parameter Estimation, Balu Santhanam, Thalanayar Santhanam Feb 2023

On Refinements To Qmfd Based Chirp Parameter Estimation, Balu Santhanam, Thalanayar Santhanam

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Commuting matrix methods furnish a full basis of orthog- onal eigenvectors for the discrete Fourier transform or its centered version needed for computing the discrete fractional Fourier transform and multicomponent chirp signal analysis. However, these approaches suffer from ill-conditioning issues at higher matrix sizes, and require a computationally expensive eigenvalue decomposition.

In this paper, ill-conditioning issues associated with the QMFD approach developed previously by the authors are addressed via diagonal modification. Further symmetries of the eigenvectors are used to reduce the size of the underlying eigenvalue problem. These modifications are then incorporated into the real-arithmetic implementation of the QMFD approach …

A Representation For Many Player Generalized Divide The Dollar Games, Garrison Greenwood, Daniel Ashlock Feb 2023

A Representation For Many Player Generalized Divide The Dollar Games, Garrison Greenwood, Daniel Ashlock

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Divide the dollar is a simplified version of a two player bargaining problem game devised by John Nash. The generalized divide the dollar game has n > 2 players. Evolutionary algorithms can be used to evolve individual players for this generalized game but representation—i.e., a genome plus a move or search operator(s)—must be carefully chosen since it affects the search process. This paper proposes an entirely new representation called a demand matrix. Each individual in the evolving population now represents a collection of n players rather than just an individual player. Players use previous outcomes to decide their choices (bids) in …

Analysis On Bottleneck And Prospect Of Integrated Circuit Talent Training Oriented To Sci-Tech Self-Reliance And Self-Strengthening At Higher Levels, Kaixuan Guan, Jiang Yu, Jianzhong Zhou, Feng Chen, Yan Han

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The most essential feature of building a new development paradigm is to achieve sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening at higher levels. The integrated circuit industry, as an important pillar to achieve this essential feature, is facing a severe external situation. China's chip shortage pain begins with a shortage of talents. The structural problem of uneven development at the overall level of the industry makes it more difficult to effectively gather and distribute talents. To achieve sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening at higher levels, we need to be both demand-oriented and problem-oriented, which means not only to pay attention to the core technology …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Due to the considerable potential of ultra-compact and highly integrated meta-optics, multi-functional metasurfaces have attracted great attention. The mergence of nanoimprinting and holography is one of the fascinating study areas for image display and information masking in meta-devices. However, existing methods rely on layering and enclosing, where many resonators combine various functions effectively at the expense of efficiency, design complication, and complex fabrication. To overcome these limitations, a novel technique for a tri-operational metasurface has been suggested by merging PB phase-based helicity-multiplexing and Malus's law of intensity modulation. To the best of our knowledge, this technique resolves the extreme-mapping issue …

Session 12: Analysis Of State And Parameter Estimation Techniques Using Dynamic Perturbation Signals, Timothy M. Hansen Feb 2023

Session 12: Analysis Of State And Parameter Estimation Techniques Using Dynamic Perturbation Signals, Timothy M. Hansen

SDSU Data Science Symposium

The trend in electric power systems is the displacement of traditional synchronous generation (e.g., coal, natural gas) with renewable energy resources (e.g., wind, solar photovoltaic) and battery energy storage. These energy resources require power electronic converters (PECs) to interconnect to the grid and have different response characteristics and dynamic stability issues compared to conventional synchronous generators. As a result, there is a need for validated models to study and mitigate PEC-based stability issues, especially for converter dominated power systems (e.g., island power systems, remote microgrids).

This presentation will introduce methods related to dynamic state and parameter estimation via the design …

Hangprinter For Large Scale Additive Manufacturing Using Fused Particle Fabrication With Recycled Plastic And Continuous Feeding, Ravneet S. Rattan, Nathan Nauta, Alessia Romani, Joshua Pearce

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

The life cycle of plastic is a key source of carbon emissions. Yet, global plastics production has quadrupled in 40 years and only 9 % has been recycled. If these trends continue, carbon emissions from plastic wastes would reach 15 % of global carbon budgets by 2050. An approach to reducing plastic waste is to use distributed recycling for additive manufacturing (DRAM) where virgin plastic products are replaced by locally manufactured recycled plastic products that have no transportation-related carbon emissions. Unfortunately, the design of most 3-D printers forces an increase in the machine cost to expand for recycling plastic at …

Enhanced Two-Step Deep-Learning Approach For Electromagnetic-Inverse-Scattering Problems: Frequency Extrapolation And Scatterer Reconstruction, Huan Huan Zhang, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang, Michael Ng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electromagnetic-inverse-scattering (EMIS) problem is solved by a novel two-step deep-learning (DL) approach in this article. The newly proposed two-step DL approach not only predicts the multifrequency EM scattered field, but also overcomes the limitation of the conventional methods for solving EMIS problems, such as expensive computational cost, strong ill-conditions, and invalidity on high contrast. In the first step, the complex-valued deep residual convolutional neural network (DRCNN) is utilized to predict multifrequency EM scattered fields only using single-frequency EM scattered field information. Based on a new complex-valued deep convolutional encoder-decoder (DCED) structure, the second step utilizes the obtained multifrequency EM …

A Novel Data-Driven Method For Two-Dimensional Angles Finding Via Uniform Rectangular Array With Automatic Pairing, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new hybrid dynamic mode decomposition (HDMD) algorithm is proposed to estimate the azimuth and elevation angles of multiple independent sources for two-dimensional (2D) massive MIMO systems with the uniform rectangular array (URA). To this end, the proposed hybrid scheme integrates the modified DMD with the augmented DMD. By treating the received data as spatial-spatial correlated signals, the modified DMD is first used to decompose these signals into spatial DMD spectrum and corresponding spatial dynamic modes. The obtained spatial DMD spectrum directly yields the electrical angle in the y-direction. Then, the corresponding electrical angle in the x-direction is computed using …

Noise2clean: Cross-Device Side-Channel Traces Denoising With Unsupervised Deep Learning, Honggang Yu, Mei Wang, Xiyu Song, Haoqi Shan, Hongbing Qiu, Junyi Wang, Kaichen Yang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Deep learning (DL)-based side-channel analysis (SCA) has posed a severe challenge to the security and privacy of embedded devices. During its execution, an attacker exploits physical SCA leakages collected from profiling devices to create a DL model for recovering secret information from victim devices. Despite this success, recent works have demonstrated that certain countermeasures, such as random delay interrupts or clock jitters, would make these attacks more complex and less practical in real-world scenarios. To address this challenge, we present a novel denoising scheme that exploits the U-Net model to pre-process SCA traces for “noises” (i.e., countermeasures) removal. Specifically, we …
