Reaction Wheel Based Rocket Active Spin Stabilization, Tanuj Vemuri Jun 2023

Reaction Wheel Based Rocket Active Spin Stabilization, Tanuj Vemuri

Electrical Engineering

Cal Poly Space Systems is the high-powered and experimental rocketry club at Cal Poly SLO. They aim to design, test, and launch fully integrated launch vehicles. In order to create efficient and reliable vehicles, stabilization systems must be implemented. One parameter that can be actively stabilized is the vehicle’s roll. The roll of the vehicle can have noticeably effects on vehicle performance, as uncontrolled roll leads to decreased system stability in flight. Un-controlled roll can also have negative impacts on the quality of onboard video, which is used for post-flight analysis and marketing.

Reaction wheels are a popular method for …

Directional Speaker, Gabriel Tramontina Ceribelli, Vincent Trevor Pierce Jun 2023

Directional Speaker, Gabriel Tramontina Ceribelli, Vincent Trevor Pierce

Electrical Engineering

Parametric Acoustic Arrays (PAA) are highly directional soundwaves whose attenuation and spread are much less affected by distance from the source as compared to traditional speakers. A well-known application for PAA is the directional speaker. Studies show that noise directly affects health and decreasing noise pollution can help improve the quality of life for millions of people. Directional speakers can revolutionize society by coupling space with sound. This project encodes audio into two RF-Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) waves to drive a transducer array. Each RF-PWM wave interferes with the other in air to generate a Single Sideband (SSB) frequency spectrum …

In the experiment presented in this paper, 200 images were used to identify Egyptian car plates. The model successfully identified Arabic license plates with 93% accuracy. A prototype is implemented …

Neural Compression Inference Accelerator: A Cost And Energy-Effective Alternative To Conventional Machine Learning Inference Methods, Matthew Wallace Jun 2023

Neural Compression Inference Accelerator: A Cost And Energy-Effective Alternative To Conventional Machine Learning Inference Methods, Matthew Wallace

Master's Theses

Recent developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence have sparked an influx of workloads that require specialized computer hardware for cloud services. The hardware running machine learning models predominantly consists of graphics processing units (GPUs) and tensor processing units (TPUs). However, these com- ponents are expensive for cloud services to purchase, costly for customers to rent, prone to price spikes, and energy-intensive. In this research we show that both cloud services and customers would benefit from utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to alleviate the aforementioned challenges. An FPGA can be configured as a machine learning accelerator, operating similarly to …

Hybrid Model To Evaluate The Frequency-Dependent Leakage Inductance Of Partially-Filled Transformers, Angshuman Sharma, Jonathan W. Kimball Jun 2023

Hybrid Model To Evaluate The Frequency-Dependent Leakage Inductance Of Partially-Filled Transformers, Angshuman Sharma, Jonathan W. Kimball

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The leakage inductance of a transformer designed for a power electronic converter can drop significantly as the switching frequency is increased due to skin and proximity effects. Although the magnetic image method-Based double-2-D model can predict the low-frequency leakage inductance of a partially filled transformer with sufficient accuracy, it is inherently a frequency-independent model. While Dowell's 1-D model uses frequency-dependent relations to account for both skin and proximity effects, its accuracy is severely affected by the assumed winding geometry. in this paper, a semi-analytical hybrid model is proposed that uses superposition to combine a modified Dowell's model with the double-2-D …
