Clean Fuel From Coal For Electric Power Generation, J. Agosta Apr 1974

Clean Fuel From Coal For Electric Power Generation, J. Agosta

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Several strategies have been studied and applied for the reduction of sulfur-dioxide emissions from power generation sites. These include switching to low sulfur fuels, stack gas processing, and a greater reliance upon nuclear power. One area of interest is the processing of fuel prior to combustion through the total gasification of coal to produce a fuel gas suitable for combustion in utility boilers and gas turbines. Specifically, this paper will deal with need for coal as a fuel in the generation of electric power, the production from coal of a clean power fuel gas of-approximately 150 to 200 Btu and …

Interfaces Of Steam Electric Power Plants With Aquatic Ecosystems, Gerald J. Lauer, William T. Waller, Guy R. Lanza Apr 1974

Interfaces Of Steam Electric Power Plants With Aquatic Ecosystems, Gerald J. Lauer, William T. Waller, Guy R. Lanza

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Growth and reproduction may be stimulated by increased temperature in the cooling system and thermal plume during seasons when ambient water temperature is less than optimum, but growth, reproduction and survival are reduced when the elevated temperatures become excessive. Some fish species congregate in the warm thermal plumes during cold seasons but are excluded from this living space by temperatures above their preference in the summer. However, the warm refuge provided by a thermal plume in cold seasons can be a death trap if a power plant shuts down suddenly and exposes the fish to cold shock exceeding their lower …

A Solar-Hydrogen Energy Conversion Scheme For Agricultural Use, R. L. Reisbig, Jack L. Boone, Gordon E. Weiss, Thomas Van Doren Apr 1974

A Solar-Hydrogen Energy Conversion Scheme For Agricultural Use, R. L. Reisbig, Jack L. Boone, Gordon E. Weiss, Thomas Van Doren

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A solar energy activated system is presented which can produce hydrogen and hydrogen-derived fuels (methanol) for use on farms. The device, named "solar-kine", also can produce fertilizer (anhydrous ammonia) as a byproduct of the hydrogen. A cost analysis shows that solar-kine may be mass-producible and sold to farmers for between $7,200 and $14,700. This is equivalent to giving the fanner energy at a price of $1.79 to $3.66 per million BTU's (in 1974 dollars). Presently (Spring, 1974) regular gasoline used in tractors at 43¢ per gallon, represents a cost to the farmer of $3.77 per million BTU's. As oil-based fuels …

Introduction -- Solar And Wind Energy, Jack L. Boone Apr 1974

Introduction -- Solar And Wind Energy, Jack L. Boone

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In recent years the scientific community has begun to explore the many alternatives of using solar energy in terms of solar energy conversion schemes. These, in general, may be classified according to use. We can talk about solar to low-grade thermo residential heating and cooling applications. We can talk about solar to high-grade heat for such applications as steam powered generation and certain high-temperature conversion processes. We can talk about solar to electrical for either residential or for large power production installations; and we can talk about wind to electrical and this would, of course, come in both large and …

Multiregional Interactions Between Energy And Transportation, Karen R. Polenske Apr 1974

Multiregional Interactions Between Energy And Transportation, Karen R. Polenske

Applications

Because of the number and complexity of the issues that will determine the use of coal by the electric-generating plants, an important asset of policy makers will be the availability of a method of analysis that allows for quick studies of many different combinations of assumptions and policies. The present prototype study is designed to show how the multiregional input-output model can be used to investigate each different assumption and policy alternative. For this paper, the analysis has necessarily been restricted to two issues. First, the results of using regional rather than national technologies in the model are assessed. This …

Radiation Effects On Gaasp Light-Emitting Diodes And Schottky Barrier Field-Effect Transistors., Ranjeet Kumar Pancholy Mar 1974

Radiation Effects On Gaasp Light-Emitting Diodes And Schottky Barrier Field-Effect Transistors., Ranjeet Kumar Pancholy

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

New processes have been developed for the fabrication of galliumarsenide-phosphide light-emitting diodes and Schottky barrier field-effect transistors. The fabricated devices were characterized electrically and were tested in a radiation environment. Transient effects on p-n junction diodes due to high energy electron beams were examined and the permanent damage caused by high energy neutrons on both diodes and SBFETs were evaluated.

A unique open-tube diffusion process was developed for the fabrication of the light-emitting diodes. A thick layer of GaAsP-oxide was grown over the epitaxial surface for surface passivation and to act as a diffusion mask against zinc diffusion into the …

Resonance Fluorescence And Resonance Raman Scattering: Lifetimes In Molecular Iodine, P. F. Williams, D. L. Rousseau, D. H. Dworetsky Feb 1974

Resonance Fluorescence And Resonance Raman Scattering: Lifetimes In Molecular Iodine, P. F. Williams, D. L. Rousseau, D. H. Dworetsky

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We report a significantly shortened scattering lifetime in molecular iodine when the frequency of a single-mode 5145-Å incident laser is tuned away from resonance with a discrete transition. This observation of a shortened scattering time is indicative of what has been conventionally called a Raman process. Off-resonance lifetime measurements, as reported here, may provide a means of determining the relative contribution to the absorption line-width of homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening.

History Of So2 Removal System At The Meramec Plant Of Union Electric, Gerald E. Dreifke, John F. Mclaughlin, Jerrel D. Smith

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In line with the then emerging air pollution control regulations Union Electric installed a limestone injection wet scrubber sulfur dioxide removal system on an intermediate size coal-fired utility boiler at its Meramec Power Plant on an experimental basis in September, 1968. During approximately 3 years of operation many difficulties were encountered with plugging and scaling of various system components by calcium sulphate. As a result of this experience along with related experiences by other utilities employing similar systems, the experiment was terminated in June, 1971.

As a result of the experiences gained, however, second generation experiments in sulfur dioxide removal …

State-Space Analysis And Synthesis Of Active Rlc Networks, Wen-Pao Lee Jan 1974

State-Space Analysis And Synthesis Of Active Rlc Networks, Wen-Pao Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation provides theoretical foundations for the state-space analysis and synthesis of linear active RLC networks containing all four types of controlled sources. The analysis portion is concerned with an explicit representation of the state model and the order of complexity of a general linear active RLC network. The problem considered in the synthesis portion is the realization of a given A-matrix with an active nondegenerate RLC-ladder network or an active RLC network without any particular structure.

The general active RLC network state model representations are explicitly expressed in terms of the fundamental circuit submatrices, the network element submatrices, and …

Rc-Gyrator Ladder And Rlc Symmetrical Lattice Network Synthesis - A State-Space Approach, Tien Hua Jan 1974

Rc-Gyrator Ladder And Rlc Symmetrical Lattice Network Synthesis - A State-Space Approach, Tien Hua

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation presents two network realization procedures using the state-space approach. The first procedure is the realization of a transfer function. A state model (A,B,C,D) is obtained from the given transfer function by inspection, where A is a companion matrix. Through a similarity transformation T, another state model (F,G,H,J) is obtained, where F is a tridiagonal matrix and can be realized by a RC-gyrator ladder network. The input source is inserted in the proper position of the ladder network, and the output is obtained through a summing circuit. It is a unified procedure and uses simple algebraic computation. A general …

An Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (Acdl), Gregory M. Bednar, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This correspondence describes a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL) for specifying the terminal behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. The language is a valuable tool for formalizing and documenting asynchronous designs, as well as providing a user interface to a completely automated synthesis system. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior and is best suited for problems that are currently being described informally by word statements. Equalization Of Qpsk Data Transmission In Specular Multipath, Rodger E. Ziemer, C. R. Ryan Jan 1974

Equalization Of Qpsk Data Transmission In Specular Multipath, Rodger E. Ziemer, C. R. Ryan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper gives performance results for transversal-filter equalization of Quadri phase phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) signals with two-component multipath and demodulator phase error. An analytical expression for optimum, minimum mean-square-error tap weights in terms of the multipath and signal parameters is given. Probability of error results for no equalization and equalization with adaptive decision-feedback tap-weight adjustment are compared. The results show that significant improvement can be obtained with relatively simple equalizer structures. Copyright © 1974 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

A Comparison Of N-Path And Digital Filters For Band Pass Applications, Stephen Cooperman Jan 1974

A Comparison Of N-Path And Digital Filters For Band Pass Applications, Stephen Cooperman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The classic problem of achieving high Q, band pass, inductorless filters has been traditionally attacked by applying active RC networks. This approach suffers from the faults of poor economy, lack of stability of performance with time and temperature, and high network performance sensitivity to component changes. The problem is reviewed from the aspect of applying techniques other than operational amplifier RC filters. The techniques presented are those of N-Path (switching) and Digital Filters. The underlying theory of both methods is explored and a design example for each of the techniques is presented. These designs are then compared on the basis …

Hybrid Carrier And Modulation Tracking Loop Performance In Rfi, Rodger E. Ziemer, Donald R. Nelson Jan 1974

Hybrid Carrier And Modulation Tracking Loop Performance In Rfi, Rodger E. Ziemer, Donald R. Nelson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The operation of a hybrid Tracking (HT) phase-locked loop (PLL) in radio-frequency interference (RFI) is considered. Results from a perturbation analysis for the loop phase error in continuous-wave (CW) RFI are found to compare favorably with results obtained by digital computer simulation. These results, together with simulation results for wide-band (in comparison to the loop bandwidth) RFI, indicate that loop structures which track both on the signal carrier and modulation components are advantageous in RFI plus Gaussian noise backgrounds. Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson Jan 1974

Performance Comparison Of Techniques For Obtaining Stereo Radar Images, George L. Bair, Gordon E. Carlson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of three stereo radar techniques is compared with respect to both theoretical performance and performance in the presence of errors. The three techniques are: an improved single flight technique, a previously proposed single flight technique, and a two flight technique. Theoretical data for comparison of image parameters affecting performance have been generated with computer simulations of the imaging geometries for the techniques. The comparison shows that the improved technique will have images with greater similarity resulting in improved stereo viewability and measurability. Computer simulations have also been used to generate sensitivities of computed terrain point coordinates to system …

Towards A Design Of Hmo, An Integrated Hardware Microcode Optimizer, James Oliver Bondi Jan 1974

Towards A Design Of Hmo, An Integrated Hardware Microcode Optimizer, James Oliver Bondi

Doctoral Dissertations

"This paper discusses an algorithm for optimizing the density and parallelism of microcoded routines in micro-programmable machines. Besides presenting the algorithm itself, this research also analyzes the algorithm's uses, design integration problems, architectural requirements, and adaptability to conventional machine characteristics. Even though the paper proposes a hardware implementation of the algorithm, the algorithm is viewed as an integral part of the entire microcode generation and usage process, from initial high-level input into a software microcode compiler down to machine-level execution of the resultant microcode on the host machine. It is believed that, by removing much of the traditionally time-consuming and …
