Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The measurement of vehicle magnetic moments and the results from use of a fluxgate magnetic sensor to actuate a lighting system from the magnetic fields of passing vehicles is reported. A typical U.S. automobile has a magnetic moment of about 200 A-m2(Ampere-meters2), while for a school bus it is about 2000 A-m2. When the vehicle is modeled as an ideal magnetic dipole with a moment of 200 A-m2, the predicted results from an analysis of the sensor-vehicle geometry agree closely with observations of the system response to automobiles. Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is for the purpose of determining if active filters are useful as audio crossover networks and in particular if they are better than passive crossover networks. An entire audio reproduction system was constructed with the express design intent of linear operation in two separate modes. These two modes being, first, a conventional single power amplifier passive crossover system, and second, an active filter triamplification system. Both systems were subjected to three different objective tests and one subjective test. The subjective testing included a wide spectrum of listeners ranging from rank amateurs to highly trained recording and mixing engineers. …
Adaptive Control Of A Cloud Simulation Chamber Expansion System, Katiya Greigarn
Adaptive Control Of A Cloud Simulation Chamber Expansion System, Katiya Greigarn
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation describes the design and construction of a closed-loop computer controlled expansion system for a cloud simulation chamber. The chamber is used to simulate atmospheric phenomena for the study of microphysical processes. In order to accomplish this, the sample gas inside the chamber must be expanded adiabatically. This means the wall temperature and the gas temperature must be made to agree as closely as possible. The wall is cooled by thermoelectric modules, and the temperature is controlled by analog controllers. The gas is cooled by the adiabatic expansion, and the corresponding pressure is controlled by a laboratory minicomputer, a …

Algorithms For The Solution Of Systems Of Coupled Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Brendan O'Shea
Articles
Several step-by-step methods for the computer solution systems of coupled second-order ordinary differential equations, are examined from the point of view of efficiency “time-wise” and “storage-wise”. Particular reference is made to a system arising in the close-coupling approximation of the Schroedinger equation. The stability of the solution is also considered.
A Microprocessor Based-Instrument For Reconstructing A Coherent Optical Wavefront, Glenn Thomas Lommasson
A Microprocessor Based-Instrument For Reconstructing A Coherent Optical Wavefront, Glenn Thomas Lommasson
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Characterizing a propagating laser's wavefront is a necessary procedure when evaluating the performance of coherent lasing systems. Measurement of this wavefront structure uncovers more useful information on the operation of lasing systems than does any other single diagnostic measurement, and is, therefore, critical when analyzing developmental lasers. There are currently several methods being used to measure this wavefront structure. One method that is noted for its operational simplicity measures the gradient of the wavefront as the wavefront is two-dimensionally scanned. An instrument that incorporates this methodology for scanning a wavefront's gradient field has been previously developed. Reconstructing the wavefront using …

Regulatory Effectiveness In The Electric Utility Industry: An Empirical Analysis, Michael A. Zimmer
Regulatory Effectiveness In The Electric Utility Industry: An Empirical Analysis, Michael A. Zimmer
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
An established result in the theory of the regulated firm is that an effective rate-of-return constraint induces the firm to employ larger proportions of capital inputs to noncapital inputs than would be the case in the absence of the regulatory constraint. This overcapitalization, often referred to as the Averch-Johnson effect, has been the subject of several recent empirical studies of the electric utility industry. The present study adds to this body of literature. It seeks to test for the effectiveness of utility regulation in the context of a cost minimization model which includes the allowed rate of return as an …

The central issue with which this paper deals is the effectiveness of alternative air pollution control standards presently in use in the United States. More specifically, an analysis and comparison of effluent air standards versus ambient air standards will be performed. The question of effectiveness will be in the context of how well the alternative pollution control measures achieve society's expectations as goals when the standards are imposed. Society's views are assumed to be reflected through a regional (state) planner. The analysis is performed through the use of optimal control techniques. Initially the effluent air standards model will be examined. …
The Energy Needs Of The Developing Countries, Vaman Rao
The Energy Needs Of The Developing Countries, Vaman Rao
UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy
The energy needs of the developing countries are enormous. They will grow with the passage of time as the pace of economic development accelerates and those countries enter the industrial epoch. The sheer physical non-availability of coal and petroleum to most of them makes it obligatory to choose an unconventional resource as an energy-base. The nuclear fission is the only option now available which is feasible, less-expensive and plentiful. Solar and fusion may be the ultimate sources in the steady state, when appropriate technologies are developed.
