Numerical Solutions Of Poisson's Equation In A Superlatice Device, Norman Todd Rollins
Numerical Solutions Of Poisson's Equation In A Superlatice Device, Norman Todd Rollins
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between the built-in potential and the energy bands in a heterojunction device is defined using the Anderson model. Based on this model, Poisson's equation for a nonhomogeneous semiconductor device in thermal equilibrium is derived and solved analytically for the special case of a doubly intrinsic abrupt heterojunction. Several numerical methods of solving Poisson's equation for general cases are explored to find the most efficient method. The validity of the chosen numerical method is tested against both the analytical solution for a Ge/GaAs doubly intrinsic diode and recently published results from similar numerical simulation studies. A p-i-n superlattice device …
Two Dimensional And Three Dimensional Path Planning In Robotics, Hyun Suk Kim
Two Dimensional And Three Dimensional Path Planning In Robotics, Hyun Suk Kim
Dissertations and Theses
A methodology for 2D and 3D collision free path planning algorithm in a structured environment is presented. The isolated free convex areas are represented as a nodes in a graph, and a graph traversal strategy that dynamically allocates costs to graph path is used. Modification of the algorithm for small computational time and optimality is discussed. The 3D path planning is done in the three orthogonal two-dimensional projections of a 3D environment. Collision checking to increase the optimality for 3D paths is done in each of the three orthogonal two-dimensional subspaces.
Finite Impulse Response Filter Design Using Cosine Series Functions, Carlton Delos Bishop
Finite Impulse Response Filter Design Using Cosine Series Functions, Carlton Delos Bishop
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Window functions have been extensively used for the design of SAW filters. The classical truncated cosine series functions, such as the Hamming and Blackmann functions, are only a few of an infinite set of such functions. The derivation of this set of functions from orthonormal basis sets and the criteria for obtaining the constant coefficients of the functions are presented. These functions are very useful because of the closed-form expressions and their easily recognizable Fourier transform. Another approach to the design of Gaussian shaped filters having a desired sidelobe level using a 40 term cosine series will be presented as …
Phase Noise Analysis And Basic Measuring Techniques, James A. Ferrell
Phase Noise Analysis And Basic Measuring Techniques, James A. Ferrell
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Oscillators are important elements of RF and microwave communications systems. The increased use of the electromagnetic spectrum requires the use of better and cleaner oscillators. Local oscillators in RF to IF converters play a big role in the overall performance of the receiver systems because phase noise in the local oscillator can drastically reduce the signal to noise ratio at the output of the receiver, especially if the converter is at the front end. Phase noise is the parameter used to describe oscillator stability. The analysis and basic measurement techniques of phase noise are performed in this report.

Uniformity Correction For A Scanned Long Wavelength Infrared Focal Plane Array, George C. Heinold
Uniformity Correction For A Scanned Long Wavelength Infrared Focal Plane Array, George C. Heinold
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents an alternative approach in providing uniformity correction for an infrared focal plane array by utilizing analog MOSFET circuitry. This technology is compatible with modern VLSI production and is capable of enhanced operation at cryogenic temperatures. The method presented here is a potential contribution to the growing list of special analog circuit configurations which may be incorporated for on-chip signal processing, inside the cryogenic dewar assembly. Electronic packaging of current thermal systems could be significantly reduced in size and weight by trading some of the cumbersome digital algorithms and complex post-processing circuitry for implementation in VLSI form.

A Piezoelectric Actuated Scanning Mirror System Utilizing A Type One Control Loop, David Gibbs
A Piezoelectric Actuated Scanning Mirror System Utilizing A Type One Control Loop, David Gibbs
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to design and build an improved control loop for a piezoelectric actuated scanning mirror system. A control system has been built having zero steady state position error and an 80 Hertz bandwidth. This was achieved by placing the piezoelectric actuator in the feedback path of an operational amplifier and placing series cascaded notch filters and lead compensators in the forward path of the control loop. A prototype system, including compensation and feedback, is developed. Its performance compares favorably with that of the system model. It is capable of plus and minus 1.7 degrees of …
Barium Borate In Parametric Oscillation And 1.54 Micron Generation, Mark Kerrigan
Barium Borate In Parametric Oscillation And 1.54 Micron Generation, Mark Kerrigan
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
As to date, there are several relatively new crystals that have been developed for nonlinear or "parametric" optical applications, including KTP, LAP, KNbO3, m=NA, and BaB204 (barium borate, or simply BBO). The latter crystal, BBO, and the use of BBo to achieve parametric oscillation around an eyesafe wavelength of 1.54 microns is the emphasis of this paper.
Unpublished material includes determining the optimum type of coupling and pump wavelength used when generating 1.54 μm eyesafe radiation based upon Poynting vector walk off, suscpetibilityies, and both signal angular and spectral acceptance widths. Poynting vector walk off curves for linearly polarized extraordinary …
Uniform Energy Discharge For Pulsed Lasers, Eric Calvin Koschmann
Uniform Energy Discharge For Pulsed Lasers, Eric Calvin Koschmann
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The art of achieving a large energy discharge in a controlled manner with relative ease is to use a pulse forming network. Historically the design of such networks generally used a single inductor and capacitor. Although easy to design and implement, this practice does not provide optimum performance in all cases. In particular, most laser welding requires a uniform energy discharge in a pulse to produce a high quality weld. Analysis has shown that when the pulse forming network approximates a lumped constant transmission line a maximum flat pulse is produced with minimal degradation of the pulse rise time. This …
Three-Level Block Truncation Coding, Deborah Ann Lee
Three-Level Block Truncation Coding, Deborah Ann Lee
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Block Truncation Coding (BTC) techniques, to date, utilize a two-level image block code. This thesis presents and studies a new BTC method employing a three-level image coding technique. This new method is applied to actual image frames and compared with other well-known block truncation coding techniques.
The method separates an image into disjoint, rectangular regions of fixed size and finds the highest and lowest pixel values of each. Using these values, the image block pixel value range is calculated and divided into three equal sections. The individual image block pixels are then quantized according to the region into which their …
Design Of A Bandpass Oculometer, Karin Brandauer
Design Of A Bandpass Oculometer, Karin Brandauer
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A passive oculometer is a device that measures the position of the eye by utilizing the corneo-retinal potential (CRP) generated by the eye. In this thesis, the Bandpass Oculometer replaces the joystick of a personal computer, allowing the viewer to use a computer simply by moving his eyes. Low frequency noise, present in all electronic circuits, produces an offset from the reference point, the center of the screen. In previous lowpass oculometry studies at University of Central Florida, this offset caused the cursor to drift toward the edge of the field of view within a period of 30 seconds, decreasing …
Computer Aided Design Of Linear Phase Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Wentao Lyou
Computer Aided Design Of Linear Phase Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Wentao Lyou
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This research report is an investigation of techniques for designing linear phase finite-duration impulse response (FIR) filters. The software package, CADFIR, developed for this project can be used to design linear phase FIR digital filters via three well-known design techniques: the window method, the frequency sampling method, and the optimal filter design method. CADFIR has options for designing such standard filters as lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and bandstop filters as well as multipassband-stopband filters. The fundamental properties of FIR filters are discussed and design algorithms associated with the three FIR filter design techniques are developed. Design examples are included and the …
Numerical Analysis Of The Resonant States Of Quantum Wells And Superlattice Devices, Alan Gilbert Whittaker
Numerical Analysis Of The Resonant States Of Quantum Wells And Superlattice Devices, Alan Gilbert Whittaker
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is concerned with the development of a numerical model to describe the resonant states associated with quantum well and superlattice devices. A numerical method is described where the time-independent Schrodinger equation is represented as a series of simultaneous algebraic equations using the finite-element method. The eigenvalues for these equations are then found using a Sturm sequence, and the eigenfunctions subsequently calculated using a reverse iteration method containing orthogonality constraints. Simulations of specific devices are presented and compared with experimental results and good correlation is observed.

Analysis Of Phase Noise In Phase Lock Loop, Diane Marie Pavik
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This research report presents an introduction into phase lock loops (PLL) with a major emphasis on calculating phase noise in frequency synthesizers. A PLL model that incorporates the major sources of noise is presented for the purpose of design analysis. The model can be used to analyze second and fifth order PLLs which allows the accurate calculation of phase noise as a function of independent variable design parameters. The stability of PLLs is also analyzed to show the effects of a marginally stable system on the resultant phase noise. Developing an accurate PLL model which accounts for the major sources …

An Optically Controlled Closing And Opening Semiconductor Switch, K. H. Schoenbach, V. K. Lakdawala, R. Germer, S. T. Ko
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A concept for a bulk semiconductor switch is presented, where the conductivity is increased and reduced, respectively, through illumination with light of different wavelengths. The increase in conductivity is accomplished by electron ionization from deep centers and generation of bound holes. The reduction of conductivity is obtained by hole ionization from the excited centers and subsequent recombination of free electrons and holes. The transient behavior of electron and hole density in a high power semiconductor (GaAs:Cu) switch is computed by means of a rate equation model. Changes in conductivity by five orders of magnitude can be obtained.

Strains In Si-Onsio2 Structures Formed By Oxygen Implantation: Raman Scattering Characterization, D.J. Olego, H. Baumgart, G.K. Celler
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Low-temperature Raman scattering measurements were carried out to characterize Si-on-SiO2 structures formed by oxygen implantation and subsequent furnace or lamp annealing. The experiments were conducted with 413.1 nm laser light to probe only the thin Si layers at the top of the structures. The Raman spectra of the furnace-annealed samples are red shifted and broadened when compared with a virgin Si surface. The shifts and broadenings decrease with increasing annealing temperatures but they are still present in samples annealed above 1250°C for 3 h. No shifts or broadenings affect the Raman peaks of the layers, which were lamp annealed …

A New General Purpose Systolic Array For Matrix Computations, Hai Van Dinh Le
Dissertations and Theses
In this thesis, we propose a new systolic architecture which is based on the Faddeev's algorithm. Because Faddeev's algorithm is inherently general purpose, our architecture is able to perform a wide class of matrix computations. And since the architecture is systolic based, it brings massive parallelism to all of its computations. As a result, many matrix operations including addition, multiplication, inversion, LU-decomposition, transpose, and solutions to linear systems of equations can now be performed extremely fast. In addition, our design introduces several concepts which are new to systolic architectures:
- It can be re-configured during run time to perform different …

Off-Axis Multimode Light Beam Propagation In Tapered Lenslike Media Including Those With Spatial Gain Or Loss Variation, Anthony Alan Tovar
Off-Axis Multimode Light Beam Propagation In Tapered Lenslike Media Including Those With Spatial Gain Or Loss Variation, Anthony Alan Tovar
Dissertations and Theses
The propagation of light beams in inhomogeneous dielectric media is considered. The derivation begins with first principles and remains general enough to include off-axis asymmetric multimode input beams in tapered lenslike media with spatial variations of gain or loss. The tapering of lenslike media leads to a number of important applications. A parabolic taper is proposed as a model for a heated axially stretched fiber taper, and beams in such media are fully characterized. Other models are proposed by the concatenation of a parabola with other taper functions.

A Modified Extended Kalman Filter As A Parameter Estimator For Linear Discrete-Time Systems, Bruno Johannes Schnekenburger
A Modified Extended Kalman Filter As A Parameter Estimator For Linear Discrete-Time Systems, Bruno Johannes Schnekenburger
Theses
This thesis presents the derivation and implementation of a modified Extended Kalman Filter used for Joint state and parameter estimation of linear discrete-time systems operating in a, stochastic Gaussian environment. A novel derivation for the discrete-time Extended Kalman Filter is also presented. In order to eliminate the main deficiencies of the Extended Kalman Filter, which are divergence and biasedness of its estimates, the filter algorithm has been modified. The primary modifications are due to Ljung, who stated global convergence properties for the modified Extended Kalman Filter, when used as a parameter estimator for linear systems.
Implementation of this filter is …

Two-Dimensionat Studies Of Streamers Fn Gases, S. K. Dhali, P. F. Williams
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
We present the results of two-dimensional computer simulations of streamer initiation and propagation in atmospheric pressure N2. The simulation algorithm makes use of flux-corrected transport techniques and was used as a tool to study the solutions of the transport equations under conditions suitable for streamers, for which realistic analytic solutions are not known. We present and discuss conclusions about streamer transport based on the results of these studies. Finally, we present a novel method of checking on the numerical accuracy with which the algorithm solves the transport equations.

Pulse-Train Instabilities In A Mode-Locked Argon Laser: Experimental Studies, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson
Pulse-Train Instabilities In A Mode-Locked Argon Laser: Experimental Studies, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The output train of pulses from an acousto-optically mode-locked argon-ion laser was studied as a function of the loss modulation frequency for small detunings from the optimum c/2L modulation. A shift away from the optimum frequency by as little as 1 part in 10⁴ was found to produce several strong lower-frequency components that amplitude modulate the mode-locked pulse train. Notably, the strongest subharmonic is a frequency near ƒopt/4. Further detuning results in an irregular, slow (of the order of 10⁵ Hz) amplitude envelope on the pulse train. The homodyne spectrum of this phase of operation represents a progressive filling-in behavior …
Testing Of Ultrasonic Bonding In Microcircuits, Ioannis Andrea Phiniotis
Testing Of Ultrasonic Bonding In Microcircuits, Ioannis Andrea Phiniotis
Theses
A model for the ultrasonic bond as used in making microcircuit interconnections was studied. This model was based on Bowden & Tabor's dry friction theory and Mindlin's analysis of Hertz's model for elastic deformation under compressive and shear stresses. To develop a well-controlled bonding system, the critical bonding machine parameters were determined, and a high-frequency capacitor microphone was fitted to the bonding machine to monitor the tool tip oscillation. Application of these techniques made it possible to control the parameters of the machine to ±5%. Flip-chip bond studies were made using this machine. The data obtained were consistent with the …
