Proposal For A Dod Combined Battlefield Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Initiative, George H. Baker Iii
Proposal For A Dod Combined Battlefield Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Initiative, George H. Baker Iii
School of Integrated Sciences - Faculty Scholarship
The presentation emphasizes the growing importance of electromagnetic survivability and compatibility. Operation Desert Storm demonstrated the clear military advantage provided by sophisticated electronic weapon and communication systems. In addition, the offensive tactic of taking out the enemy's eyes and ears during the air war paid off, giving our military decisive air superiority. The lessons for the future are clear. High-tech electronics now so dominates the battlefield that the outcome of future conflicts could well be decided by electronics attrition rather than human casualties. Our Desert Storm experience thus accentuates the importance of guaranteeing that our electronic systems will not be …

Fluttering oscillations are sometimes observed in the falling sheets of water associated with dams and waterfall fountains, and a theoretical simulation of this phenomenon was recently reported. In this study approximate analytical solutions of the previous model are described and compared with the experimental and theoretical observations.
Coordinated Intelligent Control Via Epistemic Utility Theory, Wynn C. Stirling
Coordinated Intelligent Control Via Epistemic Utility Theory, Wynn C. Stirling
Faculty Publications
An approach to local reactive coordinated intelligent control based on the concept of an epistemic system, together with a principle of action that may be exercised locally, is presented. An epistemic system provides a mechanism for agents to characterize their knowledge corpora, options, goals, and beliefs. Levi's rule of epistemic utility provides a principle of action for decision making by comparing the informational value of rejection with the belief of correctness. Decisions are made locally and reactively, rather than globally. Coordination is implemented between agents by sharing and learning the epistemic systems of other agents. The resulting coordination model is …
Gyroless Line-Of-Sight Stabilization For Pointing And Tracking Systems, Marcelo C. Aigrain
Gyroless Line-Of-Sight Stabilization For Pointing And Tracking Systems, Marcelo C. Aigrain
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
A new platform stabilization approach is described where miature, low-cost, linear accelerometers are used (instead of gyroscopes) for line-of-sight (LOS) stabilization. This is accomplished by placing the accelerometers at strategic locations and combining their outputs so that angular motion is determined from linear acceleration measurements. The control system uses the sensed angular accelerations to generate movement commands for the gimbal servomotors in the stabilization platform. This counterrotates the imaging device to stabilize its LOS. The use of accelerometers allows the servo system to operate in an acceleration control mode, which is more desirable than position or velocity control modes, typical …
A Study Of Spiking And Relaxation Oscillations In Nd:Yag Laser Using Measured Laser Parameters, Ramesh K. Shori
A Study Of Spiking And Relaxation Oscillations In Nd:Yag Laser Using Measured Laser Parameters, Ramesh K. Shori
Dissertations and Theses
It was shown analytically and experimentally that when the cavity losses are perturbed, the output intensity experiences an amplitude modulation or becomes a regular train of spikes, with the frequency depending on both the frequency of perturbation as well as pump power. Coupled nonlinear rate equations including the cavity perturbation term, are solved numerically by a Runga-Kutta method using experimentally-measured parameter values for Nd: Y AG laser. A continuously pumped Nd: Y AG laser was used to verify this theory.

Transition Mechanisms Of Two Interacting Dx Centers In N-Type Algaas Using Reverse-Bias Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy And Temperature-Dependent Pulse-Width Reverse-Bias Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy Methods, C. W. Wang, Cheng-Hsiao Wu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The reverse-bias pulsed deep level transient spectroscopy (RDLTS) and a new temperature-dependent pulse-width RDLTS (TDP RDLTS) technique are reported to study the electric-field effect on carrier emission rates and the direct interaction between double DX centers recently detected in the Se:Al0.6Ga0.4As N confinement layer of the AlGaAs/GaAs single-quantum-well laser diodes. Traditional RDLTS measurements, with constant pulse width tp, prove that the two DX centers, Et1 and Et2, have strong direct emission interaction. Furthermore, the new TDP-RDLTS technique enables one to evaluate this direct transition time constant. Possible mechanisms for this interstate …

The use of neural networks for automatic identification of variegated coloring, which is believed to be one of the most predictive features for malignant melanoma, is described. The Nestor development system (NDS) was chosen for neural network implementation. At the heart of NDS is a three-layer neural network called a restricted Coulomb energy (RCE) network. The learning scheme and the database for detection of variegated coloring are discussed. Results are reported
Investigation Of The Sensitivity, Selectivity, And Reversibility Of The Chemically-Sensitive Field-Effect Transistor (Chemfet) To Detect Nitrogen Dioxide, Dimethyl Methylphosphonate, And Boron Trifluoride, Neal T. Hauschild
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility of a chemically-sensitive field-effect transistor (CHEMFET) gas microsensor. Various physical operating parameters were tested to determine which produced the most significant sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility which were computed from response changes generated from electrical conductivity modulations when exposed to challenge gases. The variable operating parameters included: thinfilm material, film thickness, challenge gas specie, challenge gas concentration, and operating temperature. Copper phthalocyanine and lead phthalocyanine were used as thin films to detect the following challenge gases: nitrogen dioxide, dimethyl methylphosphonate, boron trifluoride, methanol, carbon monoxide, vinyl chloride, and trichloroethylene. Tests revealed that copper …
Characterization Of A Resistive Half Plane Over A Resistive Sheet, John R. Natzke, John L. Volakis
Characterization Of A Resistive Half Plane Over A Resistive Sheet, John R. Natzke, John L. Volakis
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
The diffraction of a resistive half plane over a planar resistive sheet under plane wave illum1ination is determined via the dual integral equation method (a variation of the Wiener-Hopf method). The solution is obtained upon splitting the associated Wiener-Hopf functions via a numerically efficient routine. Based on the derived exact half plane dliffraction coefficient, a simplified equivalent model of the structure is developed when the separation of the half plane and resistive plane is on the order of a tenth of a wavelength or less. The model preserves the geometrical optics field of the original structure for all angles and …
Electric Fields Of An H-Plane Tapered Iris, John R. Natzke, T. Koryu Ishii
Electric Fields Of An H-Plane Tapered Iris, John R. Natzke, T. Koryu Ishii
Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Microwave electric fields of an X -band H -plane tapered iris are calculated and plotted using the moment method for the first time. The moment method results are compared with previously obtained experimental measurements and numerical results based on an equivalent circuit approach, giving confirmation that the tapered iris is both a reciprocal and asymmetrical network. The moment method results now reveal that the asymmetry stems from the asymmetry in the phase of the input and output voltage reflection coefficients, their magnitudes being equal.

Electronic Simulation Of The Temporal Characteristics Of Photon Memory Echoes And Some Related Applications, Yuwen Kuo, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The characteristics of nonlinear photon memory echoes are investigated by means of SPICE simulations using equivalent resonator ensembles. By developing implicit nonlinear circuit models in the memory echo domain, the triple product formalism of electronic holography, involving correlation and convolution, is tested for the storage and recall of arbitrary signals and/or data bit streams in both time-inverted and nontime-inverted modes. Furthermore, a few specific optical data processing applications are also simulated in which the mixed binary multiplication of two or more binary bit streams is achieved.
Higher order products, optical pattern recognition, and other possible applications are also discussed. It …

Unified Bias Analysis Of Subspace-Based Doa Estimation Algorithms, Yang Lu
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis presents the unified bias analysis of subspace-based DOA estimation algorithms in terms of physical parameters such as source separation, signal coherence, number of senors and snapshots. The analysis reveals the direct relationship between the performance of the DOA algorithms and signal measurement conditions. Insights into different algorithms are provided. Based upon previous first-order subspace perturbations, second-order subspace perturbations are developed which provide basis for bias analysis and unification. Simulations verifying the theoretical bias analysis are presented.
Automatic Tuning Of Integrated Filters Using Neural Networks, Lutz Henning Lenz
Automatic Tuning Of Integrated Filters Using Neural Networks, Lutz Henning Lenz
Dissertations and Theses
Component values of integrated filters vary considerably due to· manufacturing tolerances and environmental changes. Thus it is of major importance that the components of an integrated filter be electronically tunable. The method explored in this thesis is the transconductance-C-method.
A method of realizing higher-order filters is to use a cascade structure of second-order filters. In this context, a method of tuning second-order filters becomes important.
The research objective of this thesis is to determine if the Neural Network methodology can be used to facilitate the filter tuning process for a second-order filter (realized via the transconductance-C-method). Since this thesis is, …
Robust Linear Quadratic Regulation Using Neural Network, Kisuck Yoo, Michael Thursby
Robust Linear Quadratic Regulation Using Neural Network, Kisuck Yoo, Michael Thursby
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) trained with the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm we have designed a robust linear quadratic regulator for a range of plant uncertainty. Since there is a trade-off between performance and robustness in the conventional design techniques, we propose a design technique to provide the best mix of robustness and performance. Our approach is to provide different control strategies for different levels of uncertainty. We describe how to measure these uncertainties. We will compare our multiple strategies results with those of conventional techniques e.g. H∞ control theory. A Lyapunov equation is used to define stability …

Detecting Chaotic Signals With Nonlinear Models, Qin Cai
Detecting Chaotic Signals With Nonlinear Models, Qin Cai
Dissertations and Theses
In this thesis we apply chaotic dynamic data analysis to the area of discrete time signal processing. A newly developed Hidden Filter Hidden Markov Model is introduced in detection of chaotic signals. Numerical experiments have verified that this novel nonlinear model outperforms linear AR model in detecting chaotic signals buried by noise having similar power spectra. A simple Histogram Model is proposed which can also be used to do detection on the data sets with chaotic behavior. Receiver Operating Characteristics for a variety of noise levels and model classes are reported.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become popular research and application interests in surveying and many other areas. Nowadays, the accuracy of the Differential GPS can easily reach the order of a few meters. Yet, there are still many ways to exploit the GPS system signal carrier to improve the accuracy to less than meter level. In this thesis, a new approach to improve the accuracy to less than meter level is presented while the observer is in the dynamic situation. In order to reach the sub-meter accuracy, we measure on the carrier phase difference (The L1 carrier frequency is …
Light Injection From An Active Cladding To The Core Of A Fiber Optic Fluorosensor, Alvin Leon Bryant
Light Injection From An Active Cladding To The Core Of A Fiber Optic Fluorosensor, Alvin Leon Bryant
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A fluorosensor works on the basis of light injection from the clad into the core of an optical fiber. The sensitivity of such a sensor depends on the efficiency of light injection. Conditions necessary for a high injection efficiency are experimentally determined. The refractive index difference between the core and the clad, ncore -nclad, must be maximized to achieve a high injection efficiency. Since an air clad has the least refractive index, a bare core fiber will have a maximum efficiency. Standard optical fibers used for communication employ a minimum value for ncore -nclad, in order …

Absorption Imaging Studies On Intrinsic Gaas, John Samuel Kenney
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A diagnostic technique has been developed which allows recording of the temporal and spatial development of electric field structures in GaAs photoconductive switches. The optical method is based on the Franz-Keldysh effect. Measurements were performed with a Nd:YAG activation laser and a GaAs laser diode as the probe laser. At low applied voltages a 100 atm wide region of high electric field is seen at the cathode only. With increasing voltage strong domain like structures emerge at the anode also. A calibration measurement shows that the electric fields in these domains are well above 50 kV/cm. At a threshold voltage, …

Study Of Single-Fiber Fiber Optic Lever Microphone, Trung Duc Nguyen
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Fiber optic sensors are widely used in today's technological applications, providing many advantages that conventional sensors lack. In particular, there is a demand in hypersonic applications to develop microphones to measure acoustic pressure that performs in high temperature and noisy surroundings. This thesis analyzes fiber optic lever microphones (FOLM), since they perform at high temperatures. An FOLM system is an intensity modulated sensor, which is simple to implement and is small in size. Two models of the FOLM have been fabricated and calibrated. The first model uses a seven-element fiber array while the second uses a single-fiber to transmit and …

Photoellipsometry, a new contactless optical method, is presented, Related to photoreflectance, this method utilizes spectroscopic ellipsometry with the addition of a laser pump beam directed at nearly normal incidence onto the sample surface, where photoexcited electron-hole pairs modify the built-in electric field as a result of the photovoltaic effect. The field-induced changes in the real and imaginary parts of the complex pseudodielectric function can be directly measured, and analyzed in terns of the pump beam power density or the probe beam photon energy to determine parameters, such as surface Fermi level, built-in field strength, depletion depth, broadening, critical point energies, …
Application Of Sequence Comparison Methods To Multisensor Data Fusion And Target Recognition, Edmund W. Libby
Application Of Sequence Comparison Methods To Multisensor Data Fusion And Target Recognition, Edmund W. Libby
Theses and Dissertations
This research addresses methods for exploiting the joint likelihood of observed kinematic and nonkinematic (sensor signature) physical events to improve dynamic object and target recognition. A principal direction is the application of dynamic programming sequence comparison techniques to condition matching of object signatures to known models according to observed kinematics. A second direction is the application of kinematic/aspect-angle Kalman filter trackers to condition kinematic tracking according to observed signatures. These conditioning processes dramatically reduce ambiguity in object recognition, and can be used together or separately to allow computation of a posterior probabilities of object class membership using Bayesian methods. Proposals …

Comparison Of A Distributed Kalman Filter Versus A Centralized Kalman Filter With Fault Detection Considerations, Paul J. Lawrence Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This project examined the results obtained by simulating an aircraft navigation system with a partial complement of a typical avionics sensor array. Two different techniques of estimation processes were utilized and compared: the conventional Kalman and the federated filter architectures. Areas of interest include error state estimation accuracy and overall performance, residual behavior under normal and induced sensor failure conditions, and potential for failure detection and isolation. Several simulations were accomplished for each filter design and the results were compared in order to verify the validity of the newly developed federated filter architecture. Comparison of the error state estimation accuracies …
Variable Structure End Point Control Of A Flexible Manipulator, Shailaja Chenumalla, Sahjendra N. Singh
Variable Structure End Point Control Of A Flexible Manipulator, Shailaja Chenumalla, Sahjendra N. Singh
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
We treat the question of control and stabilization of the elastic multibody system developed in the Phillips Laboratory, Edwards Air Force Base, California. The controlled output is judiciously chosen such that the zero dynamics are stable or almost stable. A variable structure control (VSC) law is derived for the end point trajectory control. Although, the VSC law accomplishes precise end point tracking, elastic modes are excited during the maneuver of the arm. A Linear stabilizer is designed for the final capture of the terminal state.

Reduced Bandwidth For Remote Vehicle Operations, Timothy E. Noell, Fred W. Depiero
Electrical Engineering
Oak Ridge National Laboratory staff have developed a video compression system for low-bandwidth remote operations. The objective is to provide real-time video at data rates comparable to available tactical radio links, typically 16 to 64 thousand bits per second (kbps), while maintaining sufficient quality to achieve mission objectives. The system supports both continuous lossy transmission of black and white (gray scale) video for remote driving and progressive lossless transmission of black and white images for remote automatic target acquisition. The average data rate of the resulting bit stream is 64 kbps. This system has been demonstrated to provide video of …
Scattering Of A Light Beam From Waves At An Air-Sea Interface, Donald D. Duncan, W. H. Carter
Scattering Of A Light Beam From Waves At An Air-Sea Interface, Donald D. Duncan, W. H. Carter
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The authors report a new theory that describes the scattering of an upward propagating laser beam from the sea through the air-sea interface in the presence of sea waves. The sea is assumed to be a uniform dielectric and conventional scattering theory is employed by using a modification to the first Born approximation that permits treatment of surface refraction phenomena. Methods of statistical radiometry are also used in a new manner by assuming that the surface scattering function for the sea waves can be treated by a quasi-homogeneous source model to calculate the second-order correlation functions for the partially coherent …
Waveform Estimation With Jitter Noise By Pseudo Symmetrical Probability Density Function, Wei-Da Hao
Waveform Estimation With Jitter Noise By Pseudo Symmetrical Probability Density Function, Wei-Da Hao
Dissertations and Theses
A new method for solving jitter noise in estimating high frequency waveform is proposed. It reduces the bias of the estimation in those points where all the other methods fail to achieve. It provides preliminary models for estimating percentiles in Normal, Exponential probability density function. Based on the model for Normal probability density function, a model for any probability density function is derived. The resulting percentiles, in turn, are used as estimates for the amplitude of the waveform. Simulation results show us with satisfactory accuracy.
