Weapon System Sensor Integration For A Dis-Compatible Virtual Cockpit, Matthew N. Erichsen Dec 1993

Weapon System Sensor Integration For A Dis-Compatible Virtual Cockpit, Matthew N. Erichsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis continues the Virtual Cockpit VC research which investigates distributed interactive virtual flying, environments. The VC vl.0 used the SIMNET protocols to only communicate position and orientation over a common network. A simple cockpit instrumentation configuration and limited head- tip display, HUD showed aircraft state. With VC vl.0 weapons or sensors could not interact in the simulation environment. The VC v2.0 transitions from the SIMNET protocol to a partial implementation of the Distributed Interactive Simulation DIS v2.0.3 protocol. Simulated radar and forward looking infra-red FLIR sensors were developed to aid operator detection and designation when employing various munition types. …

Radar Cross Section Visualization Using Sample Buffer Progressive Refinement Volume Rendering, Alain L. Jones Dec 1993

Radar Cross Section Visualization Using Sample Buffer Progressive Refinement Volume Rendering, Alain L. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This study developed a prototype for an interactive radar cross section visualization software system. The system, hosted on a Silicon Graphics workstation, is intended to support aircrews, mission planners, aircraft designers, and others who require an understanding of aircraft radar cross section characteristics. The input to the system is a set of radar cross section samples taken at various aspect angles. A pre-processor developed as part of this study transforms the input radar cross section data into a three-dimensional cuberille data volume. This data volume is then visualized using an interactive volume renderer. The interactive volume renderer implements progressive image …

Analyzing Adaptive Beamformer Performance In A Stable Multipath Environment, Mark Godino Dec 1993

Analyzing Adaptive Beamformer Performance In A Stable Multipath Environment, Mark Godino

Theses and Dissertations

Fighter aircraft equipped with X-Band radars having an adaptive beamforming capability exhibit degraded performance due to radome multipath reflection (RMR). The reflections from the radome into the antenna array degrade the pattern and cause the formation of large sidelobes. This phenomenon makes detection of LO targets difficult when jamming enters the high RMR sidelobes. Actual radomes are curved and cause reflected wavefronts to be nonplanar. Analyzing beamformer performance under these conditions is difficult, since the beamformer response is defined as the amplitude and phase change experienced by a complex plane wave as a function of frequency and location. To work …

Enhanced Tracking Of Airborne Targets Using Forward Looking Infrared And Laser Return Measurements, Patrick J. Grondin

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force Institute of Technology has been involved in developing Kalman filter based trackers of ballistic missiles for 15 years. The goal of this thesis is to develop a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator MMAE that tracks the missile plume using a forward looking infrared sensor and the missile hardbody center-of-mass additionally using low energy laser returns for the purpose of directing a high power laser to incapacitate the missile. The missile plume pogos about an offset equilibrium point relative to the hardbody center-of-mass with an amplitude and frequency of oscillation that are not precisely known a priori. The MMAE …

Design Of A Flight Controller For An Unmanned Research Vehicle With Control Surface Failures Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Mark S. Keating Dec 1993

Design Of A Flight Controller For An Unmanned Research Vehicle With Control Surface Failures Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Mark S. Keating

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the application of the multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) design technique to the design of a digital flight control system for the Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle (URV). The QFT technique allows the synthesis of a control system which is robust in the presence of structured plant uncertainties. Uncertainties considered in this design are the aircraft's plant variation within the flight envelope and the effects of damage to aircraft control surfaces. Mathematical models of control surface failure effects on aircraft dynamics are derived and used to modify an existing small perturbation model of the Lambda. …

Development Of A 4-Bit Parallel Analog-To-Digital Converter And A Four- Quadrant Double-Balanced Mixer Using Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Technology, Scott F. Jokerst Dec 1993

Development Of A 4-Bit Parallel Analog-To-Digital Converter And A Four- Quadrant Double-Balanced Mixer Using Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Technology, Scott F. Jokerst

Theses and Dissertations

A 4-bit parallel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a four- quadrant double-balanced mixer were designed and simulated using heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology to test the dc and high-frequency characteristics of HBTs. HSPICE simulations of small-scale components and the large-scale ADC operated within expected ranges. The ADC implemented with the Rockwell HBT model operated at a sampling rate of over 1 GHz, and the Fellows model also operated at a 1 GHz sampling rate. The mixer produced an intermediate frequency (IF) signal using radio frequency (RF) and local oscillator (LO) inputs. The circuit produced a +9 dB power gain with less …

Neural Networks For Dynamic Flight Control, Ronald E. Setzer Dec 1993

Neural Networks For Dynamic Flight Control, Ronald E. Setzer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the application of artificial neural networks (NNs) to the problem of dynamic flight control. The specific application is the control of a flying model helicopter. The control interface is provided through a hardware and software test bed called the Fast Adaptive Maneuvering Experiment (FAME). The NN design approach uses two NNs: one trained as an emulator of the plant and the other trained to control the emulator. The emulator neural network is designed to reproduce the flight dynamics of the experimental plant. The controller is then designed to produce the appropriate control inputs to drive the emulator …

An Analysis Of Fm Jamming And Noise Quality Measures, Timothy N. Taylor Dec 1993

An Analysis Of Fm Jamming And Noise Quality Measures, Timothy N. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a description of FM-by-noise jamming, both at RF and at the output of the radar receiver, in terms of spectra, time-domain waveforms, and univariate probability density of amplitude. Particular emphasis is given to the case where the peak frequency deviation of the FM modulator is sufficiently small that Woodward's Theorem does not provide a good approximation of the RF spectrum. Additionally, noise quality measures which have been used to measure noise quality of radar jammers are considered theoretically and experimentally, and it is concluded that a noise measure which incorporates both a spectral measure and a probability …

Design Of A Subsonic Envelope Flight Control System For The Vista F-16 Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Odell R. Reynolds Dec 1993

Design Of A Subsonic Envelope Flight Control System For The Vista F-16 Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Odell R. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

A controlled plant's characteristics can vary widely throughout its operational envelope. This is a major problem in nominal plant-based control system design. Hence, gain scheduling is often used for full envelop design. In this paper, it is proposed to address the plant's variability using robust control design concepts. In particular, the frequency domain based Quantitative Feedback Theory Multiple-Input Multiple-Output robust control design method is employed for the synthesis of a full envelop flight control system for an F-16 derivative. Compensators for the aircraft's pitch and lateral directional channels are designed, and the designs are validated using linear simulations.

Objective Image Quality Metrics: Applications For Partially Compensated Images Of Space Objects, David J. Lee Dec 1993

Objective Image Quality Metrics: Applications For Partially Compensated Images Of Space Objects, David J. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Digital image reconstruction tasks currently require human intervention for a subjective evaluation of image quality. A method for unsupervised measurement of digital image quality is desired. This research investigated various parameters metrics that can be automatically extracted from a digital image and tested how well they correlated with image quality. Specifically, images of orbiting satellites captured by a partially compensated adaptive optics telescope were dealt with. Two different types of quantities were investigated 1) Fourier spectral parameters, based on the spatial- frequency sensitivities of the HVS; and 2) Histogram shape parameters i.e image statistical moments giving quantitative insight into the …

Filtering, Coding, And Compression With Malvar Wavelets, Stephen R. Hall Dec 1993

Filtering, Coding, And Compression With Malvar Wavelets, Stephen R. Hall

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops and evaluates a number of new concepts and tools for the analysis of signals using Malvar wavelets lapped orthogonal transforms . Windowing, often employed as a spectral estimation technique, can result in irreparable distortions in the transformed signal. By utilizing the Malvar wavelet, any signal distortion resulting from the transformation can be eliminated or cancelled during reconstruction. This is accomplished by placing conditions on the window and the basis function and then incorporating the window into the orthonormal representation. Paradigms for both a complex-valued and a real-valued Malvar wavelet are summarized. I-lie algorithms for the wavelets were …

Evaluation And Implementation Of Asynchronous Adders, Poornima Y. Shankarreddy Dec 1993

Evaluation And Implementation Of Asynchronous Adders, Poornima Y. Shankarreddy

Masters Theses

The need for high speed addition is forcing digital system designers to trade off space. If speed is used as a criterion to judge adders, then the Ripple Carry Adder (RCA) and the Carry Look Ahead Adders (CLAAD) will rank last and first respectively. On the other hand, if space is used, then the order of these two is reversed. The rest of the adders rank between these two. This paper evaluates RCA, CLAAD, and some of the other well documented adders. Both space and speed are used to judge the merits of each of these, and whether or not …

This new model offers features not found in previous analytical or physics-based HBT models such as consideration of a cylindrical emitter-base geometry and is direct implementation into SPICE Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis. The device model parameters were determined from a knowledge of the device material, geometry, and fabrication process. The model was then developed by using semiconductor …

Spectroscopic And Vibrational Energy Transfer Studies In Molecular Bromine, Courtney D. Holmberg Dec 1993

Spectroscopic And Vibrational Energy Transfer Studies In Molecular Bromine, Courtney D. Holmberg

Theses and Dissertations

Vibrational transfer and electronic quenching in the lower vibrational levels (v' < 3) of the B3π(0u+) state of 79Br2 were investigated using spectrally resolved, temporally resolved laser induced fluorescence techniques. Spectrally resolved emissions from collisionally populated Br2(B) vibrational levels were observed for Br2 and rare gas collision partners. Vibrational transfer was efficient in the non-predissociative vibrational levels and was adequately described by the Montroll-Shuler model for harmonic oscillators. A single fundamental rate coefficient for vibrational transfer from v' = 1 to v' = 0, kv(1,0), characterizes vibrational relaxation. For Br2, the …

Evaluation Of Moderate Angle Of Attack Roll Of A Dual Engine, Thrust Vectoring Aircraft Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Kevin E. Boyum Dec 1993

Evaluation Of Moderate Angle Of Attack Roll Of A Dual Engine, Thrust Vectoring Aircraft Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Kevin E. Boyum

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an innovative approach to the design of a flight control system for performing the large-amplitude velocity vector roll maneuver at high angles of attack AOAs. A six degree of freedom aircraft model is developed from the fundamental nine-state equations of motion using a modified linearization technique. The MIMO multiple-input multiple-output Quantitative Feedback Theory QFT robust control design technique is then used to jointly address the system nonlinearities present in this maneuver and the changes in the system parameters due to changes in flight condition, treating them as structured uncertainty in the design of a three-axis rate-commanded control …

This is a brief summary of a study to reduce diffraction from an infinite two dimensional edge using tapered periodic surfaces. The concept is to use the impedance characteristics of a periodic surface to create a tapered impedance much like a tapered resistance commonly used for diffraction reduction. This approach has several advantages over. tapered resistive treatments to include ease of fabrication, better engineering control of the impedance and negligible loss absorbed by the ta per. In this study, four periodic tapers were design, built and tested. These tapers were also modeled using a variety of numerical techniques. The results …

The second loop, the Modified Tanlock Loop (MTLL), is responsible for maintaining synchronization with the carrier signal. The performance of the two loops is investigated first separately then their performance is evaluated when operated together. This thesis is an investigation on the ability of these two loops to overcome corruption of the input signal due to noise. Expanding the dynamic …

Investigation Into Model-Based Fuzzy Logic Control, Michael W. Logan Dec 1993

Investigation Into Model-Based Fuzzy Logic Control, Michael W. Logan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the feasibility of a proposed hybrid linear/Fuzzy controller for nonlinear plants. The proposed controller concept is based on the use of multiple linearizations of a nonlinear plant, which describe the dynamics of perturbations about equilibrium points throughout the desired envelope of operation. A bank of linear compensators is developed, each corresponding to a linearized plant about a different equilibrium. The multiple control signals generated by the bank of compensators are then weighted and summed using Fuzzy Logic to produce a composite control perturbation signal, which is used to drive the nonlinear plant. Experiments were conducted to test …

Parallel Algorithms For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Shih-Chuan Hung, Jau-Der Shih Dec 1993

Parallel Algorithms For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Shih-Chuan Hung, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We provide efficient parallel algorithms for the minimum separation, offset range, and optimal offset problems for single-layer channel routing. We consider all the variations of these problems that have linear-time sequential solutions rather than limiting attention to the ``river-routing'' context, where single-sided connections are disallowed. For the minimum separation problem, we obtain O(lgN) time on a CREW PRAM or O(lgN/lglgN) time on a CRCW PRAM, both with optimal work (processor-time product) of O(N), where N is the number of terminals. For the offset range problem, we obtain the same time and processor bounds as long as only one side of …

Megabit Dram Trench Depth Characterization Using Two Dimensional Diffraction Analysis With Multivariate Statistics, Ziad Ramez Hatab Dec 1993

Megabit Dram Trench Depth Characterization Using Two Dimensional Diffraction Analysis With Multivariate Statistics, Ziad Ramez Hatab

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Advances in memory IC technology for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices, have been achieved by increasing the number of memory cells occupying a certain chip area, consequently increasing memory size. Current methods of implementation include vertical topography which relies on reducing cell's thickness, while increasing its depth in order to maintain the same capacitance of stored electrical charges. As the memory size on DRAM devices continuously rises, memory cells have to reach deeper levels, thus making the process of measuring depth even harder. This creates a particularly heavy burden on microelectronics manufacturing to research new techniques capable of accurately …

Simple High-Quality Lossy Image Coding Scheme, Shaolin Bi, Khalid Sayood Nov 1993

Simple High-Quality Lossy Image Coding Scheme, Shaolin Bi, Khalid Sayood

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A simple yet efficient image data compression method is presented. This method is based on coding only those segments of the image that are perceptually significant to the reconstruction of the image. Sequences of image pixels whose gray-level differences from the pixels of the previous row exceed two prespecified thresholds are considered significant. These pixels are coded using a differential pulse code modulation scheme that uses a 15-level recursively indexed nonuniform quantizer for the first pixel in a segment and a 7-level recursively indexed nonuniform quantizer for all other pixels in the segment. The quantizer outputs are Huffman coded. Simulation …

Modeling And Simulation Of Bipolar Transistor At Low Temperature, Swarupa Madhav Nerurkar Nov 1993

Modeling And Simulation Of Bipolar Transistor At Low Temperature, Swarupa Madhav Nerurkar

Dissertations and Theses

The BICMOS technology which integrates the CMOS technology with bipolar technology has drawn considerable attention as an attractive VLSI technology because of the high speed performance and low power consumption of the BICMOS. However, continued down scaling of CMOS devices has caused increased concerns with problems such as latch up, hot carriers and short channel effect. Most of the above mentioned problems can be avoided by operating the CMOS at liquid-nitrogen temperature(LNT). At low-temperatures, the CMOS exhibits lower sub threshold leakage, higher carrier mobility (which yields improved speed performance), and a steeper logarithmic currentvoltage slope. On the other hand, the …

Pattern Recognition And Erp Waveform Analysis Using Wavelet Transform, Hong Qi Nov 1993

Pattern Recognition And Erp Waveform Analysis Using Wavelet Transform, Hong Qi

Dissertations and Theses

Wavelet transform provides an alternative to the classical Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT). In contrast to the STFT, which uses a single analysis window, the Wavelet Transform uses shorter windows at higher frequencies and longer windows at lower frequencies. For some particular wavelet functions, the local maxima of the wavelet transform correspond to the sharp variation points of the signal. As an application, wavelet transform is introduced to the character recognition. Local maximum of wavelet transform is used as a local feature to describe character boundary. The wavelet method performs well in the presence of noise. The maximum of wavelet transform …

High Power Edge-Emitting Light Emitting Diodes At 1.5Μ With Extremely Low Back Facet Feedback, J. E. Fouquet, G. R. Trott, W. V. Sorin, M. J. Ludowise, D. M. Braun, Dennis J. Derickson

Electrical Engineering

This paper describes novel semiconductor sources for optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR), a measurement technique for characterizing device and fiber reflections with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. Lasers and conventional superluminescent LEDs are not suitable for OLCR because strong reflections from the back facets mask weak reflection signals from the device or fiber under test. Even standard edge emitting LEDs (EELEDs) show significant reflections, which have limited the dynamic range of previous measurements. Low source output powers have also limited sensitivity. In order to obtain high power while minimizing internal reflections, a high single pass gain device is required. …

Explanation Of Timing Jitter Mechanisms In Multisegment Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers, Dennis J. Derickson Nov 1993

Explanation Of Timing Jitter Mechanisms In Multisegment Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers, Dennis J. Derickson

Electrical Engineering

Multisegment mode-locked semiconductor lasers offer a simple, high performance solution for short pulse generation. Six mode-locking techniques used in multisegment mode-locked semiconductor lasers are shown. This paper concentrates on a theoretical explanation of the timing jitter mechanisms in these lasers with supporting experimental measurements. The analysis covers passive, hybrid, and active mode-locking techniques for both monolithic and external cavity devices. Timing jitter is a very important system consideration for most applications of mode-locked lasers.
