Neural Network Approach To The Determination Of The Geophysical Model Function Of The Ers-1 C-Band Spaceborne Radar Scatterometer, Sami M. Alhumaidi, W. Linwood Jones
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Geophysical Model Functions (GMF) describing the relationship between the scatterometer normalized radar cross section (sigma-0) and useful geophysical parameters such as sea-surface wind vectors, wave heights, and sea- surface temperatures have been undergoing extensive research and development during the last decade. In this study, we investigate the use of two feed-forward neural networks, Multilayer Perceptron and Radial Basis Functions, for developing a useful and accurate representation of the C- band GMF. Collocated radar sigma-0 cells with global wind vector models were used as the database of the study. The resulting well-known biharmonic relationship between the sigma-0 and the relative azimuth …

A Differential Active Load And Its Applications In Cmos Analog Circuit Designs, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Michael M. Green
Electrical Engineering
In this paper we describe a CMOS differential active load and show how it can be used to create various useful structures. Tunable current gain stages and current squaring circuits are discussed. Their connection to a differential pairbased transconductor results in broad-range tunable transconductor structures suitable for adaptive continuous-time filtering applications and a four-quadrant voltage multiplier.
Evolutionary Codesign, Karthikeyan Ethirajan
Evolutionary Codesign, Karthikeyan Ethirajan
Masters Theses
We present our approach to hardware/software partitioning for embedded systems based upon Evolutionary Algorithms. We have implemented it in a CAD tool, EvoC - Evolutionary Codesign which does automatic hardware/software partitioning of real-time embedded systems at the system level. Our objective is to find good design configurations that are tuned towards user's preferences. We are able to explore a large, often intractable design space using Evolutionary Algorithms while evaluating solutions having multiple and sometimes conflicting attributes in the light of Multi-Attribute Utility Theory. EvoC provides a generic format for specifying a wide variety of design problems and the implementation assumes …

Electromagnetic properties of a system formed by an open-ended rectangular waveguide and a surface crack/slot in a metallic specimen are described in this paper. Scanning a crack on a metal surface changes the reflection coefficient of the incident dominant mode. A model as a function of relative crack location within the waveguide aperture (i.e., crack moving with respect to the waveguide aperture) is desired to describe and optimize practical crack detection applications. Hence, the change in the reflection coefficient for a generalized system encompassing empty, filled, and finite cracks located at an arbitrary position inside the waveguide aperture, is evaluated. …
Predicting Timing Behavior In Architectural Design Exploration Of Real-Time Embedded Systems, Rajeshkumar Sambandam
Predicting Timing Behavior In Architectural Design Exploration Of Real-Time Embedded Systems, Rajeshkumar Sambandam
Masters Theses
This thesis aims at developing efficient analytical techniques to perform trade-off studies in the architectural design exploration phase of real-time embedded systems. Real-time embedded systems (RTES) have stringent timing requirements. In the process of designing such a system, a key issue is to determine if a system is able to meet all the timing requirements imposed on it, though it may prove attractive in terms of cost and performance. Traditional methods of using event-driven simulation for modern RTES are very time consuming and are not guaranteed to prove feasibility. Specifically, we identify a flexibility metric to compare various options in …
High Resolution Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy For Precise Gaseous Characterization, Audra Michiele Bullock
High Resolution Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy For Precise Gaseous Characterization, Audra Michiele Bullock
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wavelength modulation spectroscopy is a highly sensitive, non-intrusive technique for probing gaseous species. Parameters such as velocity, density, and temperature can be measured and monitored with a high degree of precision. In addition, with the use of this technique multiple molecular species may be identified with a single laser probe. This measurement technique utilizes the well-known principles of modulation absorption spectroscopy in a novel way.
The research focuses on harmonic detection and the advantages gained by performing detection at higher harmonics, those greater than the commonly used second harmonic. We show that there is an increase in the sensitivity to …
Rate-Equation Approximations In High-Gain Lasers, Lee W. Casperson
Rate-Equation Approximations In High-Gain Lasers, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The rate-equation approximation is one of the most fundamental and universally employed simplifications in laser analyses. The accuracy and regions of applicability of this approximation are explored in comparisons with more rigorous semiclassical models. Higher-order rate-equation approximations are also developed, and these improved models can yield much better accuracy than conventional rate equations with little added complexity. The modified adiabatic elimination methods reported here would also be useful in reducing the mathematical models governing other physical systems.

Feedback Control Solutions To Network Level User-Equilibrium Real-Time Dynamic Traffic Assignment Problems, Pushkin Kachroo, Kaan Ozbay
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
A new method for performing dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) is presented which is applicable in real time, since the solution is based on feedback control. This method employs the design of nonlinear H∞ feedback control systems which is robust to certain class of uncertainties in the system. The solution aims at achieving user equilibrium on alternate routes in a network setting.
Least-Squares Approximate Solution Of Overdetermined Sylvester Equations, A. Scottedward Hodel, Pradeep Misra
Least-Squares Approximate Solution Of Overdetermined Sylvester Equations, A. Scottedward Hodel, Pradeep Misra
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
We address the problem of computing a low-rank estimate Y of the solution X of the Lyapunov equation AX + XA' + Q = O without computing the matrix X itself. This problem has applications in both the reduced-order modeling and the control of large dimensional systems as well as in a hybrid algorithm for the rapid numerical solution of the Lyapunov equation via the alternating direction implicit method. While no known methods for low-rank approximate solution provide the two-norm optimal rank k estimate Xk of the exact solution X of the Lyapunov equation, our iterative algorithms provide an effective …

An Adaptive Scheme For Admission Control In Atm Networks, Saragur M. Srinidhi, William H. Thesling, Vijaya K. Konangi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents a real time front-end admission control scheme for ATM networks. A call management scheme which uses the burstiness associated with traffic sources in a heterogeneous ATM environment to effect dynamic assignment of bandwidth is presented. In the proposed scheme, call acceptance is based on an on-line evaluation of the upper bound on cell loss probability which is derived from the estimated distribution of the number of calls arriving. Using this scheme, the negotiated quality of service will be assured when there is no estimation error. The control mechanism is effective when the number of …
Generalized Beam Matrices. Iv. Optical System Design, Anthony A. Tovar, Lee W. Casperson
Generalized Beam Matrices. Iv. Optical System Design, Anthony A. Tovar, Lee W. Casperson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Systematic procedures are presented for determining the optical components needed to produce an arbitrary transformation of a Gaussian light beams's spot size, radius of curvature, displacement, and direction of propagation. As an example, an optical system is considered that spatially separates the two coincident Gaussian beams produced by a high-diffraction-loss resonator that uses a Gaussian variable-reflectivity output coupler. In addition, an ABCDGH reverse matrix theorem and an ABCDGH Sylvester theorem are also derived. These matrix theorems may be used to satisfy special constraints inherent in the design of multipass and periodic optical systems.
Broadband Dynamic Modification Using Feedforward Control, Kendeas Antonis Karantonis
Broadband Dynamic Modification Using Feedforward Control, Kendeas Antonis Karantonis
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The use of feedforward control for dynamic modification is relatively new to the area of structural vibration control. In this thesis the disturbance path dynamics of a flexible aluminum beam, pinned at both ends and under the influence of broadband excitation inputs, are modified through the use of feedforward control. The ideal algebraically determined feedforward control method for response cancellation is first presented. Theoretically, this compensator modifies the disturbance path dynamics to any desired behavior. This ideal algebraic approach can only be used for minimum phase systems. In non-minimum phase systems, right half s-plane plant zeros emerge as unstable poles …

Infrared Ellipsometry On Hexagonal And Cubic Boron Nitride Thin Films, E. Franke, H. Neumann, Mathias Schubert, T. E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam, J. Hahn
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry (IRSE) over the wavelength range from 700 to 3000 cm-1 has been used to study and distinguish the microstructure of polycrystalline hexagonal and cubic boron nitride thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering onto (100) silicon. The IRSE data are sensitive to the thin-film layer structure, phase composition, and average grain c-axes orientations of the hexagonal phase. We determine the amount of cubic material in high cubic boron nitride content thin films from the infrared optical dielectric function using an effective medium approach.

Multispectral Image Feature Extraction By The Joint Wavelet-Transform Correlator, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Mark A. Getbehead, Wesley E. Foor
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
A multispectral version of an image consisting of multiple wavelet components allows for more flexible feature extraction when compared to the use of one wavelet component. We showed how a multiple-input joint wavelet- transform correlator could be used for multispectral analysis of an input image. For m wavelet scales, m versions of the wavelet and m copies of the input image were generated using conventional optics that are used as inputs to a joint wavelet-transform correlator. The output consisted of 4m-1 correlation results, one of which is the desired output. The space-bandwidth product of the system is the same as …
Automatic Synthesis Of Vlsi Layout For Cmos Continuous-Time Filters, Wei Han
Automatic Synthesis Of Vlsi Layout For Cmos Continuous-Time Filters, Wei Han
Dissertations and Theses
Automatic synthesis of digital VLSI layout has been available for many years. It has become a necessary part of the design industry as the window of time from conception to production shrinks with ever increasing competition. However, automatic synthesis of analog VLSI layout remains rare.
With digital circuits, there is often room for signal drift. In a digital circuit, a signal can drift within a range before hitting the threshold which triggers a change in logic state. The effect of parasitic capacitances for the most part, hinders the timing margins of the signal, but not its functionality. The logic functionality …

Polarization Properties Of Corner-Cube Retroreflectors: Theory And Experiment, Jian Liu, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Polarization properties of the corner-cube retroreflector are discussed theoretically by use of ray tracing and analytical geometry. The Jones matrices and eigenpolarizations of the six propagation trips of the corner-cube retroreflector are derived. An experiment is also set up for the determination of the linear eigenpolarizations and the output states of polarization for incident linearly polarized light. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical expectations.
Space Object Identification Using Feature Space Trajectory Neural Networks, Neal W. Bruegger
Space Object Identification Using Feature Space Trajectory Neural Networks, Neal W. Bruegger
Theses and Dissertations
The Feature Space Trajectory Neural Network (FSTNN) is a simple yet powerful pattern recognition tool developed by Neiberg and Casasent for use in an Automatic Target Recognition System. Since the FSTNN was developed, it has been used on various problems including speaker identification and space object identification. However, in these types of problems, the test set represents time series data rather than an independent set of points. Since the distance metric of the standard FSTNN treats each test point independently without regard to its position in the sequence, the FSTNN can yield less than optimal results in these problems. Two …
Electromagnetic Scattering From A Cavity In A Ground Plane: Theory And Experiment, William D. Wood Jr.
Electromagnetic Scattering From A Cavity In A Ground Plane: Theory And Experiment, William D. Wood Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The electromagnetic scattering from an arbitrarily shaped open cavity embedded in a perfectly conducting, infinite ground plane is examined. The cavity is filled with a linear, isotropic, homogeneous material. The fields in the cavity interior and above the ground plane are expressed in terms of the tangential fields on the cavity surface and aperture. A coupled set of three integral equations is developed governing the tangential fields on the aperture and cavity surface. The support of the unknown tangential fields is finite. A moment-method based algorithm to approximate the solution to the integral equations for axisymmetric geometries is developed. The …

Advances In Time-Domain Electromagnetic Simulation Capabilities Through The Use Of Overset Grids And Massively Parallel Computing, Douglas C. Blake
Theses and Dissertations
A new methodology is presented for conducting numerical simulations of electromagnetic scattering and wave propagation phenomena. Technologies from several scientific disciplines, including computational fluid dynamics, computational electromagnetics, and parallel computing, are uniquely combined to form a simulation capability that is both versatile and practical. In the process of creating this capability, work is accomplished to conduct the first study designed to quantify the effects of domain decomposition on the performance of a class of explicit hyperbolic partial differential equations solvers; to develop a new method of partitioning computational domains comprised of overset grids; and to provide the first detailed assessment …
Performance Of Mhpm In Rician And Rayleigh Fading Mobile Channels, Fuqin Xiong, S Bgatnyket
Performance Of Mhpm In Rician And Rayleigh Fading Mobile Channels, Fuqin Xiong, S Bgatnyket
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper evaluates the error probability of the rectangular frequency pulse multi-h modulation (MHPM) scheme in slowly-fading, frequency-nonselective or frequency-selective Rician and Rayleigh channels. The evaluation is performed with a method combining analysis and computer simulation. Performance degradations are evaluated for various direct-to-reflected signal ratio, Doppler shifts, and relative time delays in Rician fading channels. Compared with minimum shift keying (MSK), MHPM schemes appear to have retained their coding gains

Theoretical Study Of A Linear Accelerator Used As A Vuv/X-Ray Source Using The Inverse Compton Scattering Mechanism: Comparisons And Applications, Robert A. Schill Jr., Edward Mccrea
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
A classical linear theory is used to compare large synchrotron sources to a rf linear accelerator employed as a VUV/X-ray source. Comparisons are made on a per-pulse basis. It is demonstrated that the linear accelerator as an X-ray source is comparable to large synchrotron accelerators with wiggler insertion devices at the experiment. Applications to lithography, X-ray microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy and detector calibration are examined. Excluding lithography, the linear accelerator with an appropriate laser source is a useful source of X rays for these applications. As verification, classical results are compared with quantum mechanical results and are shown to be in …

Surface Modifications Of Carbon Materials Used As Anode Of Lithium Ion Battery Ⅱ. The Carbon Material With Core Shell Structure And Its Positive Effect On Cell Performance Of Graphite Anode, Shuhua Ma, Hanju Guo, Ji Li, Hongze Liang, Xiabin Jing, Fosong Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The carbon powders and film electrode with core shell structure were prepared by carbonization in gas state with using refined coal as shell material and Artificial Graphite and Mesocarbon Microbeads (2 800 ℃) graphite as core material. Galvanostatic charge/discharge measurement showed that both steady charge/discharge capacity and first charge/discharge efficiency were improved. Cyclic voltammetry indicated that the peak at about 0.7 V vs. Li+/Li characteristic of decomposition of electrolyte got weakened, and a more compact film was formed. X-ray diffraction measurement suggested the existence of amorphous carbon shell on the carbon powders and carbon film.
High-Bandwidth Attitude Jitter Determination For Pointing And Tracking Systems, Marcelo C. Algrain
High-Bandwidth Attitude Jitter Determination For Pointing And Tracking Systems, Marcelo C. Algrain
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
For many reasons smaller spacecraft are becoming more appealing. Because of their lower inertias, these spacecraft are more sensitive to disturbances and likely to have more attitude jitter than the larger units. These jitter levels are unacceptable for some scientific instruments and need to be compensated. In the case of line-of-sight type instruments, the attitude jitter can be mitigated by incorporating a fast steering mirror into the system. To take full advantage of these devices, the spacecraft attitude must be measured at sufficiently high bandwidth, well beyond what is commonly provided by inertial reference units. Various ways to obtain higher …
Dominant Wave Directions And Significant Wave Heights From Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery Of The Ocean, Lisa M. Zurk, William J. Plant
Dominant Wave Directions And Significant Wave Heights From Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery Of The Ocean, Lisa M. Zurk, William J. Plant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We show that quasi-linear theory accounts for dominant wave directions observed in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery of the ocean for range-to-velocity (R/V) ratios up to 70 s. We also show that when used in combination with Alpers and Hasselmann's [1982] model of signal-to-noise ratios in SAR imagery, this theory yields significant wave heights in good agreement with those actually observed. We have found that the apparent dominant wave direction in SAR imagery taken at a 45° incidence angle can differ from the true wave direction by as much as 40° under certain conditions. To understand such differences, we simulated …
A Simplified Approach To Reduce Blocking And Ringing Artifacts In Transform-Coded Images, Jianping Hu
A Simplified Approach To Reduce Blocking And Ringing Artifacts In Transform-Coded Images, Jianping Hu
Dissertations and Theses
Presently Block-based Discrete Cosine Transform (BDCT) image coding techniques are widely used in image and video compression applications such as JPEG and MPEG. At a moderate bit rate, BDCT is usually a quite satisfactory solution to most of practical coding applications. However, for high rate compression it produces noticeable blocking and ringing artifacts in the decompressed image. It has been an active research area for a decade for reducing these artifacts. In this thesis, a novel post-processing algorithm is proposed to remove the blocking and ringing artifacts at low bit rate. It is non-iterative and uses both spatial and transform …
