The Supervised Study Of History In The High School, Alfred J. Niesen May 1931

The Supervised Study Of History In The High School, Alfred J. Niesen

Bachelors’ Theses

During recent years more and more attention has been paid to the supervision of the study habits and activities of high school pupils. Serious students of education have not been carried away by enthusiasm for this innovation, but they have subjected this movement to the searching test of careful analysis and statistical evaluation. It is the aim of this paper to formulate a definition of supervised study, to describe and evaluate the different methods and techniques now being employed, to arrive at conclusions on the basis of statistics which are now available, and to show that in spite of present …

Reading A Tool-Subject In Secondary Education, M. Scholastica Rowan Jan 1931

Reading A Tool-Subject In Secondary Education, M. Scholastica Rowan

Bachelors’ Theses

In the discussion which follows in this paper the aim has been to show the relation between reading ability to effective study habits. To emphasize the fact that reading is not a separate curricular activity but is a tool by means of which subject matter in all fields is interpreted and experienced. Unfortunately the secondary school has not kept pace with the elementary school in using improved reading methods. All real educational progress of the individual implies the quickening of the student's powers of not merely responding to the stimulus applied by the external teacher, but of supplying stimulus of …

The Application Of Judd's Theory Of Generalization To Teaching Situations In Physical Education For Ninth Grade Girls, Helen Minerva Loveridge Jan 1931

The Application Of Judd's Theory Of Generalization To Teaching Situations In Physical Education For Ninth Grade Girls, Helen Minerva Loveridge

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the physical education work of the public schools the accomplishment of character and moral development through this subject is accepted but unproven. Through three years of teaching and extensive reading in the theory and practice of this field the writer is very much aware of this condition. The accomplishment of the health betterment through physical education activities is universally accepted, but the achievement of character betterment, although universally mentioned by educators, is not generally proven as an actual occurrence.

Since the former is achieved through careful planning the latter likewise necessitates definite method. The method may be based upon …

Secret Societies In The Secondary Schools Of The United States, Harold E. Chastain Jan 1931

Secret Societies In The Secondary Schools Of The United States, Harold E. Chastain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of secret societies in secondary schools has long been a vexing question to educators in the field of secondary education. Because of this situation high schools have been torn apart, school principals and super- intendents have lost their positions, fraternity boys have been expelled from school, educators and parents have taken their differences to court, and the law-making bodies of nearly half the states in the union have taken it under consideration for legislation. A vast amount of periodical literature has been written on the subject of secret societies and not a few chapters in books dealing with …

Adjusting Secondary School Instruction To Individual Differences, Mary Ursula Garder Jun 1927

Adjusting Secondary School Instruction To Individual Differences, Mary Ursula Garder

Bachelors’ Theses

Our twentieth-century secondary schools face a problem scarcely thought of in the previous century. The "high school” student body no longer consists of the select few who are preparing for a college career, but rather of the majority of the elementary school graduates.

Oral And Written Composition In The Upper Grades: A Thesis, Anna R. Sullivan Apr 1927

Oral And Written Composition In The Upper Grades: A Thesis, Anna R. Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

There are several reasons why our pupils have not learned 1 to talk well: 1. There has not been enough of oral language work, as a separate and distinct training, in the elementary school. 2. Oral work has not been utilized as much as it ought to be as an aid, and a preparation for, written work. A child who is to be taught to write well, must first be taught to talk well. 3. The other school subjects have not been utilized as effectively as they might be to develop power in oral composition. 4. The school has constantly …

Zoology In The High School Curriculum, Henry B. Ward Aug 1897

Zoology In The High School Curriculum, Henry B. Ward

Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory

A long time has elapsed since Bacon gave to the world the sound advice that “ we should accustom ourselves to things themselves.” Little by little this idea has gained ground, until now it is recognized as a general principle in every grade of educational work and in widely separated departments of study that contact with concrete objects is far more inspiring and thought-producing than the mere scanning of black marks on a white page. So far as natural science is concerned, the varied training which it affords has been abundantly discussed before this association and elsewhere. To be sure, …
