An Analysis Of Teacher And Student Interactions In Desegregated School Environments, Veronica Diane Roberts

This exploratory study examined whether teacher/ student interaction is affected by the integration and the ethnicity of both teachers and students in selected schools. Ten teachers, six White and four Black, from three selected school campuses volunteered to participate in the study. Each of the selected schools enrolled between six to nine hundred students with average student populations that were comprised of 60 percent White students and 40 percent Black students. Selected classrooms had a demographic composite that was representative of the total school enrollment. Using the Flanders Interaction Analysis System, verbal interaction was classified into ten major categories. The …

Prior studies have shown differing opinions on whether factors such as the makeup of the family or the level of a parent's education have an effect on academic achievement of a student. This study looks at students at a small K-8 inner city school in Minneapolis to see exactly what aspects of parenting indeed have an effect on a student's academic achievement. Through the use of qualitative research it was found that high levels of parent-teacher communication and high expectations for both level of education and performance in school give the student the best chance of experiencing academic success. Data on public secondary schools in Arkansas were gathered for two separate school years, 2005-2006 (N = 278) and 2006-2007 (N = 279), to determine if there was an association between athletic expenditures and student academic achievement. Prior to this research, there was little empirical evidence demonstrating any effect that athletic spending has upon student academic achievement throughout the State of Arkansas or the United States. In addition, there were two pieces of research found, one in Texas and one in Arkansas, indicating that athletic spending has a somewhat negative association with student academic achievement. This research examines whether teacher licensure test scores and other teacher qualifications affect high school student achievement. The results are based on longitudinal student-level data from Los Angeles. The achievement analysis uses a value-added approach that adjusts for both student and teacher fixed effects. The results show little relationship between traditional measures of teacher quality (e.g., experience and education level) and student achievement in English Language Arts (ELA) or math. Similarly, teacher aptitude and subject-matter knowledge, as measured on state licensure tests, have no significant effects on student achievement. Research indicates students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) struggle with their transition from high school onward. Students who once received services, now on their own, are left poorly equipped for success. We know from history that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have always existed in society (Campos, 2003; Sullivan, 2003). Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and queer/questioning (LGBTIQ) individuals, collectively known as sexual minorities, represent approximately 10% of the population. As many as nine students in every classroom of 30 are in some measure affected by sexual minority issues (e.g., having a gay or lesbian relative or being gay oneself) (AFSC Gay/Lesbian Youth Program, 1991). “Yet even with this substantial number, the code of silence in our nation’s school systems concerning homosexuality remains” (Fontaine, 1997, pp. 101-102).

The purpose of this study is to examine ways to best prepare students in an art curriculum at a high school level who wish to go on to pursue a career as a professional artist or designer. In this study I have interviewed eleven professional artists and designers. I asked them a series of questions regarding the types of subjects that, based upon their experience, they would recommend be taught at that level. I have also asked them to identify those things that they feel teachers could do to encourage students to consider art or design as a career.

Standardized interviews with nine high school ESL teachers in nine Massachusetts high schools were conducted. The study examined current writing practices and teacher beliefs about ELL student capacity to achieve higher-level writing ability in the current high-stakes writing environment in urban public schools. This study examined the potential relationship between Indiana high school United States history teachers' attitudes, reported classroom coverage, professional assessments, and reported sources of information pertaining to the Vietnam War and participants' generational identification. Ninety-eight teachers were surveyed and categorized according to generation. No statistically significant differences were found across generations with regard to teachers' attitudes, reported coverage, or professional assessments. Statistically significant differences were found with regard to teachers' reported sources of information informing their views of the Vietnam War. Members of the Baby Boom generation were statistically significantly more likely to report personal experience as an informing source. …

Each year increasing numbers of Mexican-heritage students are served by teachers with little knowledge of the history and diversity of the Mexican American community. This article introduces teachers to Mexican American history and diversity while taking a useful and critical look at children’s picture storybooks regarding Mexican-heritage peoples in the U.S. Ideas in the article regarding how to select, compare and contrast these picture books in the classroom will allow teachers to learn about their Mexican-heritage students, counter prejudices and stereotypes, and more effectively reach out to build academic and personal connections with these students.

With the continued increase in international business, business education has an obligation to reflect this trend. There are two methods for incorporating international business concepts into the curriculum: infusion and creation. Ideally, this obligation would be completed with a standalone course in international business. However, it can also be accomplished through incorporating international business concepts into current curriculum. Business programs need to include international aspects into the curriculum to help the students understand the economy in which they live.

The purpose of this study was to examine a resiliency based after school intervention program and its effects on the development of at risk youth in a public middle school. A middle school was chosen from the Norfolk Public School System in Norfolk, Virginia. Undergraduate college students led multiple resiliency-based activities during the immediate after school hours, concluding with an educational session. Data were collected by administers via pre test and post test. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to determine the uni-dimensionality of the resiliency traits. This study was created to determine if students at the middle school level would exhibit an increase in quarter grades in the areas of reading and mathematics throughout the year if they received mentoring from school personnel. In addition to student grades, attendance and behavior referrals throughout the year were also examined. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there exists a relationship between student achievement in Texas, as measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, and the size of the high school at different socioeconomic levels. This study compared five size categories of Texas high schools to determine which size high school had the highest percentage of eleventh grade students passing all four sections (reading, writing, math, and science) of the TAKS test. Responding to the lack of clarity related to the defined role of the school counselor, the authors investigated school principals (n = 538), in a rural Midwest state, and their perceptions of the role of the school counselor. The survey utilized was developed based on professional standards of service delivery for professional school counselors as identified by the American School Counselor Association and a listing of identified appropriate and inappropriate school counselor tasks.
