Electricity generated through residential solar provides a low carbon source of electricity. However, diffusion of residential solar remains low across the United States. Growing this diffusion takes an understanding of localized uptake trends, which can focus policy and business efforts to help increase residential solar market penetration. This is the first research to investigate residential solar uptake in Washington State and to examine environmental education as a potential driver of residential solar uptake. Through a snapshot analysis which considers environmental, economic, education, and cultural variables the present research fills this gap. Many teachers state that students who complete homework perform better academically. The current study analyzed whether homework planners (trackers) had any positive effect on the academic performance of 16 seventh grade students in a very small and rural school district. The Effect Of An Intensive Study Skills Approach On Grade Point Average Of Secondary Learning Disabled Students, Jeanne Lancaster Vaughan

This study compared an intensive study skills approach with remedial instruction in basic skills for their effects on grade point average of secondary learning disabled students. The experimental group consisted of 12 students, as did the control group. Grade point was tabulated at the onset and conclusion of the study. The statistical analysis consisted of a t-test which showed no significance at the .05 level. The null hypothesis was retained. Discussion follows.

This investigation focused upon the academic and social achievement of identified gifted and talented students who participated in a special humanities program conducted within a traditional junior high school environment. Eighty-two students, ranging from the seventh grade through their sophomore year in college, returned questionnaires lending credence to the hypothesis that these youngsters generally continue to sustain their achievement level as they progress through life. Students' attitudes regarding gifted identification, motivation, peer relationships, and program preparation were discussed.

This paper presents a plan for implementing career education into curriculum at Sterling Junior High School. The first phase of implementation would take place within selected eighth and ninth-grade woodworking classes. This would consist of exploratory experiences in career education related to the subject area of woodworking.

The second phase would implement career education into the other subject areas at the junior high level. This too, would consist of exploratory experiences in career education as related to each different subject.

Recommendations include further research and field testing of the suggested career education concepts so that optimum implementation can be achieved.

The influence of school entrance age upon the academic achievement of 434 eight grade students was examined. Students were divided into three age groups. Comparison on five California Achievement Test subtests and IQ showed no significant differences except between sexes on the Mechanics of English and Spelling subtests.

A biased sample made comparisons of the same students at the twelfth grade impossible. Comparisons between the students who did and those who did not take the twelfth grade test revealed significant differences.

Students' Selected Reading Materials According To Interest And The Relationship To Comprehension, Carol Lynn Olson

It was hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between students' comprehension of a passage which was of high interest and students' comprehension of a passage which was of low interest.

Eighty-six high school students read two articles they indicated interest in and two they did not. Comprehension questions were answered on each of the four articles.

Of the 20 t tests conducted only two showed significant differences. This suggest that factors other than interest affect comprehension.

This paper presents curriculum guidelines prepared for the revised family life program at Wilson Junior High School in Yakima, Washington. The guidelines were designed for teaching a course in Teen Living to all eighth grade students, girls for two tri-mesters and boys for one tri-mester. Teen Living precedes a course in Family Living open to all ninth grade students on an elective basis. Family Living will be taught on a coeducational basis beginning with the 1972-73 school year.

This study investigates the vocabulary and comprehension achievement in the English language for secondary and high school students in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

The Nelson Reading Test was administered to seven hundred forty students in various high schools in Lesotho. A statistical analysis was run on the data and conclusions yielded that reading achievement increases with school age, but the rates of improvement differ from one group to another.

Recommendations include additional research suggestions.

Assessing The Effectiveness Of An Experimental Method Of Presentation Of The Sullivan Mathematics Program, Harry L. Carthum

This study compared the effectiveness of a revised presentation method with the standard presentation format of the Sullivan Mathematics Program. Using two measures of achievement gains, a comparison of results revealed no significant difference between the experimental and the standard methods. The study was limited by the use of a highly inferential standardized achievement test, and possibly, by the "Hawthorne" effect.

Thirty-two children, low in sociometric status, were placed in one of four treatment groups: Counseling, Teacher-Counseling, Teacher Feedback, and a Control for a period of ten weeks. Post tests were administered to determine differences in sociometric gains following treatment.

The results indicated that counseling was an effective means of improving sociometric status when compared to a control group.

Limitations of the study were discussed, and recommendations included measuring individual teacher effect on sociometric status.

The Relationship Between Self Concept Reports And Academic Achievement Of Secondary Students, Eugene A. Dudley

This study examined the relationship between self concept reports on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and academic achievement. Thirty-one male and 24 female tenth grade students whose obtained scores on the National Educational Development Test met the criteria for under-achievers, achievers, and overachievers were given the TSCS. A significant correlation was found between GPA and total positive score (r = .28, sig. .05). Underachievers defined by low grades had significantly lower self concept scores than did underachievers defined as achieving 1 SD below their predicted achievement level on the NEDT.

This paper presents a test of the effectiveness of a largely student generated sixth grade social studies program in comparison to a teacher generated conventional program. Pupil achievement levels, attitude toward social studies, and behavioral ratings in various areas related to the study of social studies were measured and statistically or graphicly analyzed.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of reading disabilities in delinquents compared to the prevalence of reading disabilities in non-delinquents of the same age, sex, grade, and socio-economic background. The subjects where ninth and tenth graders enrolled at Mount Vernon High School, Mount Vernon Washington, during 1971-72 school year. They were divided into two major groups, delinquent and non-delinquent. The results indicated no significant difference between the reading scores of the two groups.

This paper presents a study designed to identify the effectiveness of two visual aids, the chalkboard, and the overhead projector, as they are used in a junior high drafting program. The students involved in the study were randomly selected and placed in two treatment groups and one control group. The experiment did not prove that either visual aid was better than the other, but indicated that the overhead projector had more advantages and greater versatility than the chalkboard.

The effects of a token reinforcement program where points were exchanged for free time in an "average" public school seventh grade arithmetic class was studied using two groups.

The experimental group mean scores for percent correct on worksheets were the only ones that made a significant gain. The percent correct on worksheets was the only variable reinforced. This paper presents a comparative study of differences in social maturity levels for urban and rural ninth grade students of East Valley High School in Moxee School District #90. The study was designed to test social maturity levels of both groups by administration of the Bell Adjustment Inventory. Evaluation of the results followed showing some significant differences.

This paper presents a survey study of the present status of scouting in Washington, Class AA, high school wrestling. The study through the use of a questionnaire and personal interview, was designed to reveal the experience level of coaches, the use of scouting, and the method of scouting in Washington State. This paper presents the use of an expectancy table, based on a pilot study using the DAT Sentence Subtest and Middle School Grade Point Average, to place students in the various English tracks at Sehome High School. Sixty students were placed in accordance with the English grade predictions of the expectancy tables and sixty were placed in accordance with middle school teacher-counselor recommendations. Significantly more students were placed correctly when the expectancy tables were used.
