First paragraph of the General Summary
This study has been based upon the analysis of the Nebraska Classification Test in English (Form V) administered to 5,183 pupils graduated from 346 Nebraska high schools in 1934. Usable supplementary data have been supplied by 153 of these high schools, but in some portions of the study data for the remaining high schools have been available from other sources. The tests were examined as to content and reliability, and were compared with published tests used for purposes of placement by other collegiate institutions. Two thousand test papers were carefully analyzed to determine types …

The Status Of Handwriting Instruction And The Qualifications Of Teachers Of Handwriting In The Elementary And Secondary Schools Of Kentucky, Robert Ashby
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The major reason for this survey was to secure definite facts and opinions from superintendents, principals and teachers in elementary and secondary schools on the subject of handwriting. The information gathered gives conclusive evidence that these groups recognize the need for more and better training in this fundamental subject.
The aim of the writer was to determine:
- The extent to which outlined courses of study in handwriting are followed.
- The number of special instructors in handwriting, whether part- or full-time and other subjects they teach.
- Whether handwriting is taught incidentally with other subjects with no formal lessons, or as a …
Typewriting, Shorthand, Business Correspondence, & Office Training In Secondary Schools & The Need For Correlation, Fannie Harrington
Typewriting, Shorthand, Business Correspondence, & Office Training In Secondary Schools & The Need For Correlation, Fannie Harrington
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
It is the purpose of this thesis to show the need for correlation of these subjects because they are so closely related. It may also bring about an awakening of commercial educators to the many things a typewriting teacher must teach and that other subjects are repetitions to a large degree of what the student has already been taught in typewriting.
World History, "What's It All About.", Harold E. Barto
World History, "What's It All About.", Harold E. Barto
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Opinion seems to be well divided as to the shortcomings of World History. Some believe that it is a mistake to attempt to cover so much history in the time allotted. Others contend that poor teaching is the greatest obstacle. Obviously, both views have some merit. However, there is another reason that is not generally given that may come nearer reaching the source of the trouble. It may be that the starting point in World History is too far removed from the student's interest.

The High School Dramatic Club, Lucille L. O'Brien
The High School Dramatic Club, Lucille L. O'Brien
Bachelors’ Theses
The choice of topic for this thesis is an outgrowth of work with high school students in dramatic club activities. Though the work is intensive at times, the informal spontaneity and sincere enthusiasm which accompany it provide real enjoyment. The choice and the scope of material are intended to meet the needs of beginning and advanced groups, to motivate individuals who are seeking self-expression, and to suggest activity for leisure time. Certainly the appeal of the work should be utilised to make the dramatic club an intimate, joyous, and creative project for teachers and students alike.

The New School In The Upper Grades, Selma F. Tonn
The New School In The Upper Grades, Selma F. Tonn
Bachelors’ Theses
The chief equipment a good teacher needs is a sympathetic understanding of child nature and child interests, and common sense or tact in the choice and use of methods of teaching suited to them. Anyone who has often seen the happy eager faces of all the children in a class of thirty-five or more can speak with authority. To discover the particular interests of each child; to choose those which have broad, various, and valuable educational opportunities, which can serve as ’’leads” to further interests and wider experience; to give children experience in living as it is natural to them …
Educational Qualifications Of Commercial Teachers In The Four Year Accredited High Schools Of Kansas, Logan C. Guffey
Educational Qualifications Of Commercial Teachers In The Four Year Accredited High Schools Of Kansas, Logan C. Guffey
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The problem grew out of a class in seminar under the direction of the late Doctor Hugh C. Pryor in the summer of 1931 in which a study was made of the preparation and training of teachers in the secondary schools of Kansas. It was the opinion of the group that there was little definitely known about the collegiate training of the high school teachers of the state. Quite frequently members of the class suggested that research work in this field would be a valuable contribution from the standpoint of information concerning the scholastic attainment of the teachers of secondary …
The Content Of The High School Biology Course, Paul A. Geenen
The Content Of The High School Biology Course, Paul A. Geenen
Bachelors’ Theses
Ignorance is bliss. Perhaps it is ignorance which prompts youth to attempt problems which the united efforts of experts and specialists have failed to conquer completely. However, there must be one "first attempt"; perhaps the first futile trials will eventually lead to something really worthwhile. This thesis is an attempt to help solve an almost insoluble problem: "What should be included in the high school biology course to give the best results." The work is based very largely on the results of those who have wrestled with the problem and emerged with new ideas; it is an effort to present …
Tests & Study Guides In Literature For Secondary Schools, Ida Nance
Tests & Study Guides In Literature For Secondary Schools, Ida Nance
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
When the time came to choose a thesis subject, I immediately said Objective Tests Applicable to Collateral Reading. Having been told "nothing has been done along that line - almost nothing at all," I decided to extend my investigations to include any and all tests in high-school literature - tests for comprehension and appreciation, survey and achievement tests, and tests designed for collateral reading. Each phase of the study has been interesting, but I fear that I have remained somewhat partial to the unit first begun and have perhaps given it a bit more consideration than the other divisions have …

Subject Combinations Of Kentucky High School Teachers, Clarence Emrick
Subject Combinations Of Kentucky High School Teachers, Clarence Emrick
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Even though very good courses have been worked out for the numerous colleges of the state of Kentucky, there still remains a problem unanswered by the teacher-training institutions of the State. This problem is: What shall the prospective teacher be prepared to teach? and the question for the prospective teacher is: In what fields shall I prepare to teach?
In order that the objective of this study - the ability to give more intelligent guidance from the standpoint of the teacher-training institutions and the ability to make the proper selection of subjects from the standpoint of the prospective teacher - …

The Relative Merits Of Teaching Schorling And Clark Mathematics Without The Aid Of Drill, Compared To Teaching It With The Aid Of Two Kinds Of Drill, Edward E. Royse
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This study attempts two things: (1) to find if Schorling and Clark Modern Mathematics, one of the adopted texts of Kansas, provides enough drill in the eighth grade; and (2) to weigh the value of two kinds of drill, viz., a flash-card machine and a drill test book.
Is High School Chemistry A Preparation For College Chemistry, Mansfield Martin
Is High School Chemistry A Preparation For College Chemistry, Mansfield Martin
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The subject of this study grew out of a desire to estimate the value of high school chemistry and its relation to college chemistry. The purpose is to bring about a better understanding of the necessity of a closer tie-up between different levels of our educational system. Life and growth are continuous processes, and, if education if life, we must make it a continuous experience. While limited because of incomplete records and changing classifications of our high schools, it is hoped that this study will lead to a further and more scientific study of related problems in this field.
Is Formal Grammar Necessary In The High School?, Edward Ray
Is Formal Grammar Necessary In The High School?, Edward Ray
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study does not attempt to decide which is the better method of presenting grammar to the high school pupil; that is a question which would require much more extensive research to answer. We are interested primarily in determining and evaluating the success in college formal grammar of students who have had formal grammar in high school as compared with the success of those who have not had high school formal grammar. The study, therefore, is an attempt to show the differences existing in preparation for college formal grammar on the part of the students who have had high school …

Teaching Of General Science In The Junior High School, Joseph T. Petska
Teaching Of General Science In The Junior High School, Joseph T. Petska
Bachelors’ Theses
In this age of science and materialism there is not in the writers opinion, a more enriching course in our high schools as is a well balanced, well organized course in general science! It is enriching because, if taught well, it functions in the lives of the learners, it bridges the gap between the life of the learner and his environment.
The writer feels that the work in general science is of great importance and is worthy of the best thought of those responsible for the details of the courses in this subject in the junior high school. In spite …

Work Of A Teacher-Librarian In A High School, Lilian Gaskell
Work Of A Teacher-Librarian In A High School, Lilian Gaskell
Bachelors’ Theses
The librarian is more fortunate than the teachers, who know only the pupils in their classes, for all she knows all the pupils in school. They come to her wanting help in lesson arrangements. Thus she has an opportunity to teach them how to use books and libraries. But still more important is that she has an opportunity to guide and direct the leisure reading of pupils. She must be a good judge of young human nature, a pleasant, patient, sympathetic, understanding kind of person if she is to win the confidence of boys and girls, if she is to …
