Accident prevention is the concern of most citizens, but it is the special concern of the industrial arts teacher. School shops are potentially dangerous places, but when properly equipped, arranged, and managed, provide a relative accident free environment.

Occasionally accidents in the shop do happen. The shop teacher is interested in preventing accidents to the students and protecting himself and the school against liability.

Professional libraries have been slow to develop in Iowa. The purpose of this study is 1) to survey the current status of professional libraries in secondary schools in Iowa, 2) to identify obstacles to setting up professional libraries, 3) to identify motivating devices and techniques used to encourage teacher use of the library, 4) to make objective comparison of reported professional libraries in relation to the size of student enrollments.

The West Junior High School faculty consists of 1200 students and fifty-five certified teachers. This figure includes one principal, one vice-principal, three counselors, and one librarian.

As one can see, one librarian, or media specialist, is not enough professional manpower to fully implement the dynamic library program that is needed in West Junior High. To quote from Standards of School Media Programs: •It is recommended that the media center have one media specialist for every 250 students or major fraction thereof.

Assessing The Effectiveness Of An Experimental Method Of Presentation Of The Sullivan Mathematics Program, Harry L. Carthum

This study compared the effectiveness of a revised presentation method with the standard presentation format of the Sullivan Mathematics Program. Using two measures of achievement gains, a comparison of results revealed no significant difference between the experimental and the standard methods. The study was limited by the use of a highly inferential standardized achievement test, and possibly, by the "Hawthorne" effect.

The Effects Of Counseling On Sociometric Status With Fifth And Sixth Grade Students, Dennis L. Cruchon

Thirty-two children, low in sociometric status, were placed in one of four treatment groups: Counseling, Teacher-Counseling, Teacher Feedback, and a Control for a period of ten weeks. Post tests were administered to determine differences in sociometric gains following treatment.

The results indicated that counseling was an effective means of improving sociometric status when compared to a control group.

Limitations of the study were discussed, and recommendations included measuring individual teacher effect on sociometric status.

The Relationship Between Self Concept Reports And Academic Achievement Of Secondary Students, Eugene A. Dudley

This study examined the relationship between self concept reports on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and academic achievement. Thirty-one male and 24 female tenth grade students whose obtained scores on the National Educational Development Test met the criteria for under-achievers, achievers, and overachievers were given the TSCS. A significant correlation was found between GPA and total positive score (r = .28, sig. .05). Underachievers defined by low grades had significantly lower self concept scores than did underachievers defined as achieving 1 SD below their predicted achievement level on the NEDT.

Comparison Of Curriculum Proposals For The Tri-Cities Junior High School And Middle School Special Education Programs, Wayne T. Robertson

This paper presents a study which examines the curricula of the junior high and middle school special education programs of Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland, Washington. A questionnaire was circulated and the data were used to compile a comprehensive skill inventory to be proposed for use by the junior high and middle school special education teachers of these cities.

The Implementation Of Occupational Versatility To Industrial Arts Education For Special Education At Jason Lee Junior High School, Cecil M. Stewman

This paper gives a description of the "Occupational Versatility Program" as implemented into the Industrial Education Program at Jason Lee Junior High School. The program studied was a new industrial arts curriculum replacing the traditional industrial arts program. A description of the program was given as well as the problems encountered in the organization and operation of the program.

Recommendations for implementation of the program for other schools were included. Some suggestions for further research were also given.

A Comparison Of A Student Generated And A Teacher Directed Sixth Grade Social Studies Course, James Joseph Walker

This paper presents a test of the effectiveness of a largely student generated sixth grade social studies program in comparison to a teacher generated conventional program. Pupil achievement levels, attitude toward social studies, and behavioral ratings in various areas related to the study of social studies were measured and statistically or graphicly analyzed.

Recommendations included further studies eliminating the uncontrolled variables of this study and allowing for longer time periods with larger samples as well as a longitudinal study.

Prevalence Of Reading Disabilities In Delinquents Compared To Prevalence Of Reading Disabilities In Non-Delinquents, Kenneth C. Vanderhyde

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of reading disabilities in delinquents compared to the prevalence of reading disabilities in non-delinquents of the same age, sex, grade, and socio-economic background. The subjects where ninth and tenth graders enrolled at Mount Vernon High School, Mount Vernon Washington, during 1971-72 school year. They were divided into two major groups, delinquent and non-delinquent. The results indicated no significant difference between the reading scores of the two groups.

The objectives of this study were (1) to reveal the status of career-vocational development practices taking place now in the junior high school science departments of Iowa, (2) to describe the type of career-vocational development experiences being offered to approximately 55% of Iowa pupils in grades 7, 8, and 9, and (3) to identify the amount of emphasis being placed upon career-vocational development education at these grade levels of the science curriculum.

The purpose of this study was to follow-up graduates of the Tri-City Special Education Work Experience Program to determine: (a) employment status, (b) whether the graduates felt the program was adequate, (c) types of employment now held, (d) why they are not employed, and (e) if there is any relationship between employment status and classroom abilities.

A personal interview schedule was developed for use with the 17 students in the sample. Two more schedules were then developed for present and past employers. School records were used to determine academic achievement and I.Q. scores.

An Experimental Study Of Two Audio-Visual Aids Used In Beginning Drafting, Ronald Norman West

This paper presents a study designed to identify the effectiveness of two visual aids, the chalkboard, and the overhead projector, as they are used in a junior high drafting program. The students involved in the study were randomly selected and placed in two treatment groups and one control group. The experiment did not prove that either visual aid was better than the other, but indicated that the overhead projector had more advantages and greater versatility than the chalkboard.
