Information literacy has become a priority in education. Elementary school library media specialists daily encounter the dilemma of having to teach information literacy skills without having time to do it adequately. With the proliferation of computers in schools, the possibility exists that students could use web-based information literacy tutorials or guides when teachers or librarians are not available. This study examines fifth grade students' perceptions of using on-line, web-based assistance to help them work through a research process, the Big6 . Place-centered learning enhances the interdisciplinary practice of Essential Academic Learning Requirements, and actively engages students in local issues. The study of cultural landscapes encourages a sense of place within the Lower Columbia River Gorge, and fosters student connections with the Dalles Mountain Ranch. Morris Berman tells the story of his maternal grandfather, who, when he was five years old in 1883 or 1884, was sent to a Jewish elementary school in Belorussia. On the first day of class, the teacher startled the young boy by taking each child's slate and smearing the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet—aleph and beys—on it in honey. His grandfather's first lesson consisted of eating the letters off the slate. The purpose of this study was to (a) examine Ivy Tech State College (ITSC) faculty members' and administrators' attitudes and beliefs about technology-mediated, interactive distance education (TIDE) and their. experiences and willingness to deploy it; (b) investigate how those experiences, and attitudes and beliefs affect faculties' perceived willingness to be involved in the deployment of TIDE; and (c) discover differences between the two groups in attitudes and beliefs, experience, and willingness to deploy TIDE.
