The Development Of Photography Training For Recreation And Wellness Marketing, Erica Pax
The Development Of Photography Training For Recreation And Wellness Marketing, Erica Pax
Master of Education in Instructional Design and Technology Plan II Graduate Projects
The Department of Recreation and Wellness marketing office previously did not have a standardized photographic workflow to ensure all marketing student employee photographers consistently capture, edit, name, and store digital image files. As a result, the digital photo library contained digital image files of varying quality that were organized inconsistently. These inconsistencies made it difficult for designers to quickly and efficiently locate adequate image files for use in the creation of promotional items. In addition, a reduction in administrative staff and an increase in workload necessitated that new student employees learn new processes through self-instruction.
The researcher created a photography …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Female English language learners (FELLs) are not taken under consideration when trying to attract new student populations to computer science fields. Frequently, females are studied cohesively without regard to their individual distinctions and challenges. This unique population has to overcome traditional gender perceptions and linguistic confronts when considering the field of computer science. This paper provides a practical four-hour workshop for novice teachers in high school that are eager to empower female English language learners (FELLs) that demonstrate potential or are interested in entering computer science fields. An overview of research within the last ten years is exhibited, which includes …

Perceptions Of Urban High School Teachers Transitioning From Traditional Instruction To Blended Learning, Michael Wayne Hamilton
Dissertations
Increasing demands for technology integration at the K-12 level have led school districts to explore blended learning as an option for sustaining productive instructional strategies while increasing technology integration in the classroom. Furthermore, Disruptive Innovation Theory (Christensen, 1997) offers insights as to the potential impact of blended learning on the field of education. This phenomenological study attempted to capture the lived experiences of urban high school teachers who were transitioning to a blended learning instructional strategy. In addition, this study utilized the Stages of Concern (SoC) component of the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM) to isolate the phenomenon and provide …

This article compares the developments of the Internet and the Web with those of education. The web influences people's way of thinking, doing and being, and people influence the development and content of the web. The evolution of the web from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and now to Web 3.0 can be used as a metaphor of how education should also be evolving, as a movement from Education 1.0 towards that of Education 3.0. The Web, Internet, Social Media, and the evolving, emerging technologies have created a perfect storm or convergence of resources, tools, open and free information access. …
Transmedial Documentation For Non-Visual Image Access, Melody J. Mccotter
Transmedial Documentation For Non-Visual Image Access, Melody J. Mccotter
Proceedings from the Document Academy
In my doctoral studies on information accessibility for the individual who is blind or visually impaired, I’ve been exploring the ways we can make image documents more accessible. This requires using an alternative sensory modality, and translating the document into a different format. The questions that arise when we consider this process are many, but among them are:
- Is it the same document once we’ve converted it to an audio narrative about the work, or a 3D topographic map of an artwork, or a musical interpretation?
- If it is not the same document, how truthful can the “trans-medial” translation be …

Using Visual Mind Mapping To Design Academic Courses: Transitioning From Text-Based Planning Documents To Course Design Maps, Rob L. Wood
Learning Showcase 2014
The adage “A picture is worth a thousand words” (circa 1921) represents the concept that images can convey complex ideas and information more efficiently, and more effectively, than linear text alone. By contrast, much of the practice of instructional design remains bound to its “textual roots” from the 1940s. Today, most instructional design products, such as planning documents, remain text-based. The author’s instructional design practice remained textually-based for over 20 years, until his research into, and subsequent adoption of, mind mapping, a visual method of organizing complex thoughts and developing ideas. The principles of mind mapping are quite old. Porphyry …
Choosing Appropriate Technologies To Engage Millennial Students, Yi Yang, Dennis Priebe
Choosing Appropriate Technologies To Engage Millennial Students, Yi Yang, Dennis Priebe
Learning Showcase 2014
Millennial students are those who were born between years 1982 - 2003 and thus started to enter college after year 2000. Howe and Stress (2000) contend that millennial students have different attitudes and behaviors than the previous generations, such as baby boomers and Generation X. They are also referred to as Generation Y, Nexters, Digital Natives, and Generation Me. Millennial students are (1) conventionally motivated and respectful; (2) structured rule followers; (3) protected and sheltered; (4) cooperative and team-oriented; (5) confident and optimistic about their futures; (6) talented achievers (Strange, 2004). To meet their learning styles and needs, we need …
Learner Interest, Reading Comprehension And Achievement In Web-Based Learning, Maryellen Tancred
Learner Interest, Reading Comprehension And Achievement In Web-Based Learning, Maryellen Tancred
Learning Showcase 2014
The web-based learning environment provides access to education for those who are unable to be physically present in a classroom. In situations where comprehensive learner analysis is cost prohibitive, fiscally prudent guidelines for learner analysis that include learner interest and the cultural attribute of language may be feasible alternatives to omitting learner analysis altogether as an online instructional design consideration. Community colleges routinely collect student data during the college admission process, such as the COMPASS reading score, which may be useful in predicting student success in web-based courses.
Therefore, learner characteristics such as the COMPASS reading score, learner interest in …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Open Education Resources (Oer) In Higher Education: The Case Of Franklin University And Its Use Of Oer, Lewis Chongwony
Learning Showcase 2014
Many stakeholders in the educational sector have voiced and advocated in the use of OER as a panacea to the skyrocketing costs of instructional and learning materials including textbooks, software, videos, and research articles among others. However, little effort in terms of research has been devoted to exploring and understanding the cost, benefits, and impact of OER on learning and/or education,. More specifically, a framework that can answer critical questions about the OER and its impact on learning is needed. It is against this background that this poster session will articulate the need for more robust research on the impact …

Statistical Strategies: Meeting The Needs Of Struggling Math Students Through Self-Guided Interactive Media, Nimet Alpay, Adam Reid, Caitlin Uttley, Carolyn Levally
Learning Showcase 2014
The goal of every introductory statistics course is to produce statistically literate students with an ability to make informed decisions and to think critically. This is a challenging task. In fact, the introductory statistics course at Franklin University, Math215, has had disproportionately low success rates for several years. To address these concerns, considerable revisions were made to the curriculum, addressing the challenges of students and faculty. Perhaps the most significant among those changes was the addition of a series of standalone, interactive multimedia pieces to supplement the textbook and other course materials. The development of these 28 multimedia pieces took …

Learning Showcase 2014
Many principles and concepts are best explained and demonstrated through worked examples. Worked examples can take many forms from fill-in-the-blank to fully written-out from scratch. Research shows that students and faculty alike find great value in spontaneous written examples on a whiteboard or chalkboard. This spontaneity allows instructors to quickly adjust to the learners needs. In this showcase, you will see how to use technology to transfer this concept of the classroom-based spontaneous worked example to online and hybrid class environments.

A Novel Approach To Using Personal Response Systems And Diagrams To Foster Student Engagement In Large Lecture: Case Study Of Instruction For Model-Based Reasoning In Biology, Johanna M. Fitzgerald
Doctoral Dissertations
At UMass Amherst a method of personal response system (clickers) use in large lecture biology called Guided Application of Model-based Reasoning (GAMBR) has been designed to give students experiences in reasoning like expert biologists: In large lecture biology many instructors appear to use clickers mainly as a quizzing and attendance tool. Less well documented and examined are uses of clickers to facilitate cognitive engagement in learning scientific models and skills. In GAMBR, clicker questions ask students to apply and perturb biological models; this is designed to engage them in model-based reasoning. In an attempt to understand such a course, an …

Media Now: A Historical Review Of A Media Literacy Curriculum, Yonty Friesem, Diane Quaglia Beltran, Ed Crane
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The Elizabeth Thoman Archive at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island, has the last complete kit of one of the milestones in the early chronology of media literacy, the 1972 Media Now curriculum. This curriculum was the first of its kind, using self-contained lesson modules that were part of a larger series of kits, text references, and accompanying workbook. Its self-directed learning model gave students the opportunity to learn about the media, by doing, responding to, and reflecting on core concepts of media production. Using physical artifacts from the Media Now kit, historical documents, promotional …
