R2d2 Model: Creating Diverse Online Instructions, Ke Zhang
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
With the increasing applications of online learning at all levels in training and education in Chinese-speaking countries and regions, together with the diversity of online learners in terms of age, background, and learning style, educators are faced with a critical challenge: how to design and implement online learning experiences to meet the varied needs of highly diverse online learners. This article introduces a highly practical, easy-to-apply model, the R2D2 model (Bonk & Zhang, 2006, 2008) to the Chinese readers in particular, for the creation of diverse online learning activities. R2D2 (Read, Reflect, Display, and Do), is a new model particularly …
A Study On The Acceptance Of Mobile Phones For Teaching And Learning With A Group Of Pre-Service Teachers In Hong Kong, Simon So
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Ubiquitous devices offer new teaching and learning opportunities from K-12 to higher education settings. The integration of mobile facilities and Web technologies allows researchers and educators to explore different possibilities in m-Learning. In this study, a group of pre-service IT teachers in Hong Kong were introduced to the field of m-Learning by participating in a series of m-Learning activities. Three applications were designed and programmed with XTHML-MP/ WAP 2.0 technologies and supported by server-side Web technologies of PHP and MySQL. The research aimed at providing the opportunities for the teachers to explore this new trend in teaching and learning and …

Engaging Diverse Secondary Students In International Collaborative Networked Learning, C. Candace Chou, Chi-Syan Lin, Mark Van ‘T Hooft, Yi-Me Lin
Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
This study examines the processes of engaging a group of highly diverse 7th and 8th grade students in the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) for collaborative activities through a global networked learning environment called APEC Cyber Academy. Thirty-six middle school students went through a nine-week project-based learning program that aimed at improving ICT skills and promoting international peer learning. Although students showed strong interest in learning about ICT, the findings suggest that students need to be coached in collaboration skills, given appropriate roles to ensure proper division of labor, and supervised closely to ensure the completion of tasks.

Perceptions Of Academic Administrators Towards Quality Indicators In Internet Based Distance Education, Jack D. Dilbeck
Perceptions Of Academic Administrators Towards Quality Indicators In Internet Based Distance Education, Jack D. Dilbeck
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in perceptions among executive and unit level academic administrators in two-year colleges in relation to the importance and the presence of indicators of quality in Internet-based distance courses. Indicators of quality included institutional support, course development, teaching and learning, course structure, student support, faculty support, and evaluation and assessment. Two-year colleges have historically been the most under funded institutions of higher education that have found themselves relying more heavily on the use of distance education to meet the needs of their students. Email invitations to participate in the web-based study …

Students' Perspectives On Humanizing And Establishing Teacher Presence In An Online Course, Paula Jones, Maryann Kolloff, Fred Kolloff
Students' Perspectives On Humanizing And Establishing Teacher Presence In An Online Course, Paula Jones, Maryann Kolloff, Fred Kolloff
Instructional Development Center Faculty and Staff Research
The challenge in designing and developing online courses is for faculty members to establish their teaching presence by humanizing the online classroom experience for their students. The authors use the community of inquiry model developed by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000) to examine the attributes of teaching presence in an online course. This study then evaluates students' perceptions relating to the significance of producing a video for an online course that introduces the instructor to students and see if a specific introductory video will help to establish the instructor's teaching presence for the students. The data collected from this study, …

A Study Of West Virginia Secondary Public School Library Media Centers And Library Media Specialists And Their Use Of 21st Century Technology Tools, Kimberly Ann Bickel Sigman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Twenty-first century learning, learning that teaches global and wellness awareness, and civic and business literacy, is essential for students to become vital, contributing members of society. In order for students to participate in an environment of 21st century learning, the attainment of 21st century skills is essential. Twenty-first century skills encourage students to collaborate, communicate, critically think, and reflect. Such skills involve the use of technology tools – 21stcentury tools – which include computers, Internet, production software, and communication processes. Literature establishes school library media centers as sites where students find many types of 21st century tools. Staffed by school …

The Videoconferencing Classroom: What Do Students Think?, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett
The Videoconferencing Classroom: What Do Students Think?, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett
Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences Faculty Publications
The advantages of video conferencing in educational institutions are well documented. Scholarly literature has indicated that videoconferencing technology reduces time and costs between remote locations, fill gaps in teaching services, increases training productivity, enables meetings that would not be possible due to prohibitive travel costs, and improves access to learning (Martin, 2005; Rose, Furner, Hall, Montgomery, Katsavras, & Clarke, 2000; Townes-Young & Ewing, 2005; West, 1999). However, there are few studies that analyze the effectiveness of videoconferencing from the student’s perspective. Videoconferencing technology is often touted as a method to connect with previously inaccessible student populations, but does it adequately …

Spanish grammar can be presented in a memorable way by using a system of color-coding and storytelling. This materials development project includes three stories written or adapted by the author to present the gender of nouns, noun/adjective agreement and verb inflection. Images of the sun and the moon, and the colors purple and orange are used to illustrate masculine and feminine gender of nouns. Chameleons and the color green exemplify adjectives. Additionally, patterns of verb conjugation charts are presented using color to show how verbs inflect to agree with the subject pronoun and tense. While learning Spanish grammar, these colors …

Computer-Based Instruction And Cognitive Load, Jui-Long Hung, Brandon Randolph-Seng, Kittikunanant Monsicha, Steven M. Crooks
Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Following cognitive load theory, we used a computer-based software training paradigm to determining the optimal number of steps or information chunks to present before practice opportunities. Results demonstrating that the size of information chunks presented and the type of practice used individually influenced participants' ability to effectively learn via computer-based instruction. These findings contribute to the literature by showing the importance of practice and optimal segment sizes for learning via a computer.
