The Need For And Meaning Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans Jan 2002

The Need For And Meaning Of Positive Organizational Behavior, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

This essay draws from the emerging positive psychology movement and the author’s recent articles on the need for and meaning of a positive approach to organizational behavior. Specifically, the argument is made that at this time, the OB field needs a proactive, positive approach emphasizing strengths, rather than continuing in the downward spiral of negativity trying to fix weaknesses. However, to avoid the surface positivity represented by the non-sustainable best-sellers, the case is made for positive organizational behavior (POB) to take advantage of the OB field’s strength of being theory and research driven. Additional criteria for this version of POB …

This is applied to telecentres according to the stage of maturity of their information services. The framework is illustrated with literature- and interview-based cases, and will help an understanding of ways in which telecentres can scale-up …

Better Organization's Performance In Local Commercial Banking Industry Through Strategic Balance Strategy, Seng Wah Ling Jan 2002

Better Organization's Performance In Local Commercial Banking Industry Through Strategic Balance Strategy, Seng Wah Ling

Student Works (2000-2009)

Similarity among firms has received a great deal of attention in strategic management and organization theories. Past researches observed that firms face pressures to be different and to be the same. By differentiating, firms reduce competition. By conforming, firms demonstrate their legitimacy. Both reduced competition and legitimacy improve performance. This study addresses the performance consequences of firm-level strategic similarity with Strategic Balance Strategy, which states that moderately differentiated firms have higher performance than either highly conforming or highly differentiated firms. This study examines the relative performance of local commercial banks in Malaysia from 1995 to 2000. The study investigates whether …

A Study Of Perceptions And Practices On Knowledge Management Of Malaysian Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Kang Yi Yang

Student Works (2000-2009)

Knowledge nowadays is the only resource that does not subject to 'diminishing returns' in economic terms. Organizations are immersed by data and information in daily operations, yet relevant knowledge for faster problem solving and better decision making is not always available as expected. Managing knowledge is therefore emerging as a critical discipline to sustain and prosper for any organization. Research of knowledge management (KM) on Malaysian companies in general, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular, is still at infant stage. KM of course has been mainly developed and pioneered by large organisations which are business diversified and geographically dispersed. …

The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi Dec 2001

The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

The central premise of this paper is that firm level characteristics or behavioral traits, referred to as predispositions, influence how the firm behaves and interacts in its interfirm relationships (EFRs). This augments traditional approaches that focus on the intra-relationship perspective and/or on environmental influences on the relationship. Firm predispositions of strategic intent and relational proclivity are expected to individually, and in combination, increase the extent of connectedness between partners in interfirm relationships. In turn, through connectedness, they affect relationship effectiveness in terms of reciprocity, information exchange, and cooperation. Results indicated that the predispositions increased connectedness, but combinational effects were not …

Off-Shore Borrowing And Guarantees By Banks: Implication For Portfolio Management., C. C. Edordu Dec 2001

Off-Shore Borrowing And Guarantees By Banks: Implication For Portfolio Management., C. C. Edordu

Bullion

The subject I have been asked to reflect on is important and somewhat provocative given the potential significance of foreign capital in the development process and the implied doubt the topic raises about the capacity of banks to manage their portfolios on accessing external finance. With regard to financing tenors, it is pertinent to point out that the tenor of liabilities of most banks in Nigeria and Africa is short. The paper has focused on the various discussions about the conditions for good governance, which raises questions about the structure and functioning of the state, its relationship to society and …

Potential Of Demand Management As A Short-Term Means Of Relieving Airport Congestion, Terence Ping Ching Fan, Amedeo R. Odoni Dec 2001

Potential Of Demand Management As A Short-Term Means Of Relieving Airport Congestion, Terence Ping Ching Fan, Amedeo R. Odoni

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Rapid air traffic growth combined with limited airport airside capacities have led to ever-increasing delays. When the demand for air travel and the general economy recover from the current crisis, it is conceivable that air traffic congestion may again come to the fore. Given the rather bleak prospects for significant near-term increases in airport runway system capacity, it is likely that demand for runway access may need to be carefully managed to keep flight delays under control. While various approaches to demand management have been suggested in the research literature, few studies to date have provided quantitative evidence on two …

Global airline strategic alliances have emerged since the late 1980s, and their number has slowly risen through the years. Will the number of such alliances continue to proliferate? Or will airlines consolidate with one another to form mega-carriers? In this paper, the likelihood of various airline consolidation and alliance development possibilities was examined based on a number of high-level trends and forces. The most probable near-term industry alliance and consolidation structure is described, accompanied with a probable path of evolution. These predictions have important implications for managers of strategic alliances, carriers who are currently in an alliance as well as …

Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones Oct 2001

Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones

Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

In this time of increasing uncertainty about business viability and stability, many organizations are looking to gain control of their "bottom line" by strengthening the link between organizational outcomes and employee rewards. Long gone are the days of steadily and automatically increasing worker salaries as a hoped-for method of expanding productivity. Indeed, there is a school of thought that suggests that automatic pay increases act as a "demotivator" for many individuals. The more common approach currently is to utilize incentives (i.e., additional compensation/rewards given for performance beyond normal expectations) as a way of enhancing employee work motivation, thereby leading to …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In many high technology industries, strategic alliances have become important for improving a firm's financial performance by providing knowledge that can be used to develop the capabilities needed to introduce new products. Therefore, researchers have examined those characteristics of alliances that can contribute to the performance of high technology companies. There is agreement that the structure and knowledge flows within alliances can affect a firm's innovativeness. However, to date, researchers have studied alliances as individual events or transactions, failing to recognize their synergistic effects as a coherent portfolio. Viewing alliances as a portfolio of strategic agreements, we suggest that portfolio …

Sys Trust Liability, Daniel D. Selby

Accounting Faculty Publications

The Certified Public Accountant has always been subject to scrutiny by the legal system to ensure that the interest of the public is best served. In fact, over the last thirty years, the number of malpractice suits against accountants has increased. The increase in accountant malpractice litigation is a result of the public's perception that the CPA guarantees the accuracy of financial statements, and that the CPA has sizeable financial resources, along with malpractice insurance. Prior to the Elliott Report in 1997, CPA liability was limited to fraud, breach of contract, and negligence in the traditional areas of audit, accounting, …
