Toward A Viable Coastal Resource Management Strategy For Liberia : The Formation Of An Autonomous Integrated Coastal Resource Management Commission, Cyrus L. Gray Jr.
World Maritime University Dissertations
Most of Liberia’s population of three million live in the vicinity of its 350 miles long coast and depend to a large extent on the resources and economy associated with the coastal area. There is also a huge potential for earnings from the exploitation of offshore petroleum, something, which has been discovered in Liberian waters but remains unexploited. The level of development in these areas, environmental considerations, regional cooperation and compliance with internationally agreed standards and conventions leaves much to be desired for Liberia. This dissertation is an appraisal of Liberia’s treatment of these important issues, both in legislation and …
Values-Based Strategies And Planning For Global Organisations, David Kimber
Values-Based Strategies And Planning For Global Organisations, David Kimber
IIMB Management Review
As social, environmental and economic conditions change over the world, global managers must adopt new strategic planning techniques. Historically two contrasting motivations for global activity can be identified. The first, based on a need to enhance security, has led to aggression and conflict. The other is based on an interest in enhancing peoples' lives and an urge to share this understanding. David Kimber suggests that understanding the second perspective, helps managers maintain a stable and long term orientation to global development. Outlining a framework for considering values, he reviews a values focus to clarify first, how it relates to the …

What Kinds Of Knowledge Does A Firm Need?, P N Rastogi
IIMB Management Review
The starting point of a firm's Knowledge Management System (KMS) is a specification of the kinds of knowledge required by the firm in support of its strategic goals. The KMS of a firm is driven and shaped by its competitive business strategy. Strategy formulation and planning are however, highly unstructured, iterative, non-algorithmic and creative processes. A firm, therefore, must think through its requirements of and expectations from managing knowledge. Strategic thinking, in turn, may be usefully guided and facilitated by plural frames of strategic discourse. In this context, P N Rastogi outlines recent frames of strategic thinking as well as …

Forming Strategic Alliances: Issues In Conceptualisation, Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal
IIMB Management Review
The interactive and interdependent economy of the present day is rooted in exchanges or 'give and take' of varying complexity. The process of conceptualising, planning and executing exchanges to the benefit of all players involved is basic to marketing. Given the three generic forms of economic organisation - market, hybrid and hierarchy, organisational expansions in high technology markets in recent times have witnessed the emergence of hybrid strategic alliances as an alternative to markets and hierarchies. Strategic alliances enable functional integration in inter-firm relationships involving tangible and intangible exchanges. Rapid technological innovations and technological complexity, and forces such as uncertainty, …

Organizing Culture: Leader Roles, Behaviors, And Reinforcement Mechanisms, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth, Mark A. Siders
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Organizational leaders provide the primary impetus in defining, forming and shaping corporate culture. Leadership literature emphasizes on the leader's role in "articulating a vision" and the leader's pivotal role in establishing culture by setting objectives and then removing hurdles by smoothing the path for attaining those objectives. The model of corporate culture transmission focuses on behaviors that corporate leaders employ to create, communicate and manage corporate culture. However, the model does not emphasize interpretation and identification with leader behaviors in ways that would cause members to embrace the leader's values and beliefs. Improved focus over two decades does not yet …

Using Strategic Partnerships To Create A Sustainable Competitive Position For Hi-Tech Start-Up Firms, Arnoud De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In most cases these companies chose or were forced to engage in a technology partnership in order to develop and survive. As one would expect, some of these partnerships succeeded whilst others failed. With hindsight it occurred to the author that success or failure was not necessarily a random event, or idiosyncratic to one particular company, but that there seemed to be a pattern. Some partnerships failed because they were a strategic misfit, others probably because they were badly implemented. Based on these clinical case studies, The author addresses these questions: when and under what conditions a partnership is needed; …

Manufacturing Strategy And New Venture Performance: A Comparison Of Independent And Corporate Ventures In The Biotechnology Industry, Shaker A. Zahra, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Little empirical research has compared the manufacturing strategies of corporate and independent new ventures. This study explores these differences with data from the young, science-based biotechnology industry, and examines the performance effects of manufacturing strategy variables including scope, competitive thrust, and capabilities. The results show that the corporate and independent biotechnology new ventures pursue significantly different manufacturing strategies, and that different dimensions of manufacturing strategies affect the performance of corporate vs. independent ventures quite differently.

The recent interest for regionalization of business operations in Asia underscores the demand for expatriates. While much has been written on expatriation, very little was documented on expatriates assigned in Asian countries. In this respect, American, German, Japanese and Korean MNEs have been found to take active interests in regional expansion of business in Asia. Expatriation is a significant international management issue for them. The high costs of expatriation and the risks for expatriate failures also underscore this importance. As such, selecting the right candidate for expatriation success is a crucial issue for these MNEs. This paper presents the findings …

The development of the field of strategic management within the last two decades has been dramatic. While its roots have been in a more applied area, often referred to as business policy, the current field of strategic management is strongly theory based, with substantial empirical research, and is eclectic in nature. This review of the development of the field and its current position examines the field’s early development and the primary theoretical and methodological bases through its history. Early developments include Chandler’s (1962) Strategy and Structure and Ansoff’s (1965) Corporate Strategy. These early works took on a contingency perspective (fit …
Competitive Interaction: The Influence Of Strategic Group Structure, Sherry M. Burlingame
Competitive Interaction: The Influence Of Strategic Group Structure, Sherry M. Burlingame
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
The assertion that competitive interaction is a central focus of business strategy emerged from the Strategic Management Research Group (SMRG) at the University of Maryland. The premise of this perspective is that competition among firms can be modeled using communication theory to explain how firms in an industry interact. Competition, in this framework, is represented as the series of actions and counteractions, termed responses, that firms undertake to position themselves in their industry. Thus, in this model, interaction (actions and responses) equates with competition. Studies conducted by the members of the SMRG have outlined the relationship of key variables within …

Corporate Governance And Corporate Illegality: The Effects Of Board Structure On Environmental Violations, Marie A. Mckendall, Carol M. Sanchez, Paul Sicilian
Corporate Governance And Corporate Illegality: The Effects Of Board Structure On Environmental Violations, Marie A. Mckendall, Carol M. Sanchez, Paul Sicilian
Peer Reviewed Articles
This paper examined the effects of corporate governance structures on the incidence of corporate illegality by analyzing the relationship between environmental violations and several dimensions of corporate board structure. Results demonstrated that the value of stock owned by corporate officers and directors was positively and significantly associated with serious environmental violations. Outsider dominance, joint CEO‐Chairpersons, social responsibility committees, and attorneys on boards were not significantly related to corporate illegal behavior. The control variables of size, industry profitability, firm profitability, and industry concentration were all significantly related to environmental violations. The findings involving board structure cast doubt on the efficacy of …

Global Strategic Analysis: Framework And Approaches, Howard Thomas, Timothy Pollock, Philip Gorman
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Geographic, economic, cognitive, and social forces can influence the ways in which the inimitable resources of firms and their competitors are defined and evaluated in a globally competitive environment. We trace how academic research on strategy has attempted to address how firms identify their core competencies and competitive resource advantages at both the firm and national level. We then discuss the ways in which managers can attempt to identify a competitive reference group as a benchmark for evaluating their company's relative strengths and weaknesses. Finally, we develop an integrated conceptual framework that can be used to inform managerial strategic analysis …

Strategic management in Asia is different. Decision-making differs from that taught in Western, and even Asian, schools of business. In the last decade, the influence of Japanese management systems on Western management practice has become evident. Though the Japanese economy is the world's second largest, and Japan's population substantial, neither compares with the combined economies and combined populations of non-Japanese Asia. The influence of the most aggressive elements of the non-Japanese Asian business communities, the Overseas Chinese and Overseas Indian Networks cannot help to be felt on Western management practice. This article explains why this difference in decision-making styles exists, …
