What makes a director independent? Scholars, regulators, and investors have grappled for decades with the fleeting notion of director independence. Originally conceived as guardians of shareholder interests that could safeguard a corporate board’s ability to check management’s power, independent directors have become a marquee feature of modern corporate governance. But do the corporate actions of directors that are considered “independent” under current standards comport with what we think independence requires? Greater diversity in the healthcare workforce has been identified as a critical need in serving an increasingly diverse population. Higher education institutions have been tasked with increasing the number of underrepresented students in the health occupations pipeline to better align with the demographics of the general population and meet the need for a diverse health occupations workforce. This study used the National Science Foundation’s National Survey of College Graduates dataset to capture data across time, examining the intersectionality of race, gender, and first-generation status on the salary outcomes of students who earn degrees related to health occupations. Age-related comments in the workplace can lead to discrimination and legal consequences. The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) protects employees aged 40 or older, while Michigan law extends protection to all ages. Harassment based on age can create a hostile work environment and result in lawsuits. Employers should address such issues, educate employees about discrimination and bias, and promote a culture that values diversity.

Perceptions And Bias Of Small Business Leaders In Employing People With Different Types Of Disabilities., Nanette Goodman, Samantha Deane, Fitore Hyseni, Michal Soffer, Gary Shaheen, Peter Blanck

This study focuses on how small business leaders perceive employing people with different disabilities. The authors analyze attitudes, stereotypes, and concerns that influence hiring decisions. They find that employers often feel more comfortable hiring people with mobility impairments than individuals with mental health or cognitive disabilities. Promoting diversity among dental school applicants and enrollees is key to tackling oral health disparities and improving learning outcomes. Building the pipeline has proven to be an effective method to increase diversity and heighten interest in dentistry among students. Destination Dental School is an 8-week remote pipeline program aimed at increasing diversity of historically underrepresented minority (HURM) students in the field of dental medicine. Pre- and post-program surveys showed that the program was effective in fostering HURM students’ interest in dentistry and increasing their knowledge and preparedness for dental school applications.

Current systems have not been successful in addressing the existing racial inequities between black dental professionals and other racial groups. This group in particular seems to have less visibility and representation in organized dentistry. Nowhere has this been more obvious that during the COVID-19 pandemic whereby African-American professionals were not as prominently featured in offering their viewpoint and expertise. In this paper, insights regarding the topic of diversity are discussed in order to gain perspective into a situation that has existed far too long.

On 24 September 2019, the World Maritime University released Conference Report for the WMU Third International Women's Conference on Empowering Women in the Maritime Community that was held in April of the same year. The conference brought maritime and ocean stakeholders together at WMU to discuss the common challenge of gender equality and to address the gender gap in the maritime, oceans, ports, fishing and related industries.

This study explores library and information science (LIS) program websites from a recruitment and marketing standpoint and sheds light on the availability of diversity - related content. LIS and higher education literature suggests that the Internet and program websites are crucial when it comes to prospective students’ graduate school selection. Using Berelson’s (1952) quantitative content analysis technique, the researchers examined faculty profiles, diversity statements, diversity-related courses, funding opportunities, achievements, and student organizations on program websites. Diversity is a vital concept when engaging with modern social science research and among higher education practitioners. Despite the pervasive discourse surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, quantification of diversity remains a challenge across the social sciences. This study proposes a new conceptual framework, applies the framework to the quantification of diversity and measurement of its impacts. Further, this study demonstrates the robustness of the new conceptual framework alongside the positive impacts of diversity on institutional outcomes.

This thesis will focus on the changes that are occurring in the composition of the population of the U.S. - how diverse it has become - and diversity's impact on the U.S. business entity.

Research has indicated that the largest percentage of new growth in the labor market will minorities and women.
