Economies Of Size, Volume And Diversification In Retail Grain And Farm Supply Businesses, D. G. Anderson, D. L. Helgeson Apr 1974

Economies Of Size, Volume And Diversification In Retail Grain And Farm Supply Businesses, D. G. Anderson, D. L. Helgeson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This study revealed substantial cost savings could accrue to grain and farm supply businesses from plants of larger size. Given sufficient competitive pressures, farmers and consumers might benefit as well from these savings. A continuation of the present trend toward larger, more diverse firms seems likely. Existing firms of sub-optimum size and product structures will probably remain in operation until they are depreciated out. Relatively modest savings from diversified structures make any rapid trend toward one-stop centers unlikely.

Why New Land Farmers Need A Super Bounty, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick Jan 1974

Why New Land Farmers Need A Super Bounty, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Development of farming land in Western A ustralia's agricultural areas requires the application of large amounts of superphosphate. Since 1963, the Phosphate Fertiliser Bounty applied to superphosphate manufacture has ensured that this superphosphate has been available to farmers at reasonable cost and has helped to make new land development economically worth while.

Originally applied as an incentive to agricultural development, the bounty is now to be withdrawn and it is feared that the resulting increase in the cost of superphosphate will retard development of many West Australian farms and reduce many farm incomes to an unsatisfactory level.

These effects will …

Income Tax For Primary Producers, P J. Hackett

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Increased farm incomes of the past two years and recent changes in income tax provisions have aroused enquiry concerning taxation for primary producers.

Most farmers who have had preliminary March, 1975, income plus provisional tax assessments made have been astonished by the size of their likely commitment.

This article explains the taxation provisions applying to primary producers and gives an example of how tax is calculated, showing why March, 1975, will be a time of reckoning for many farmers.

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom Jan 1973

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The main defence of Australian farmers against the cost-price squeeze has been to increase productivity. The tendency is to run more and more stock per man and to grow more crop per man.

Some farmers run unusually large numbers of animal units per man-year.

The operations of 16 such farmers over one year were examined to find out whether it had been profitable for them to reduce labour inputs to such an extent.

Probate Another Farm Cost, J Ripley Jan 1972

Probate Another Farm Cost, J Ripley

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Death duties are too big a cost to be ignored on most farms, because most farms have substantial assets in land, stock, buildings and machinery. The saying "a wise man does not lay up treasures, the more he gives to others the more he keeps for his own" seems true of the types of estate planning outlined in the following article.

Quarantine : Two New Inspection Centres Built, C R. Chambers

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A BIGGER population, a busier State; more travellers, more goods from more places; faster, more frequent transport—these things have demanded for Western Australia greater efforts to protect its primary industries from the chance introduction of disease and pests which could attack our plants and animals.

Mp25 The Problem Of Freight Car Supply, John Richard Felton Aug 1970

Mp25 The Problem Of Freight Car Supply, John Richard Felton

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

As early as 1907 the Interstate Commerce Commission held extensive hearings on freight car shortages. At frequent intervals ever since, Congress and the commission have addressed themselves to the problem of freight car supply with considerable vigor but meager results. Allegations of an inadequate supply of freight cars have been widespread in recent years. The decline in the number of freight cars is easy to document: between 1959 and 1968, the number of cars used in grain transport (boxcars and covered hopper cars) declined by 26%. If, however, consideration is given to changes in car capacity and car miles …

This study was designed to determine the relative profitability of sugar beet production relative to other enterprises competing with sugar beets for limited resources and to estimate a production response of sugar beet growers in the beet producing areas of Utah.

Sugar beet producing areas in Utah were delineated. Representative farm units for beef-crop, dairy-crop, and all-crop farms were synthesized. Enterprise budgets were formulated and analysed to ascertain the relative profitableness of sugar beets compared to competing enterprises in each production area.

Linear programming was used to develop the supply response portion of this study. An aggregated supply curve was …

Symposium On Livestock Problems, John C. Macfarlane, F. J. Mulhern Jan 1969

Symposium On Livestock Problems, John C. Macfarlane, F. J. Mulhern

Agribusiness Collection

Part 1 - John C. Macfarlane

Livestock, animals raised in confinement, animals in large numbers shipped to other countries, and, of course, those cattle, calves, sheep, swine, goats, poultry and horses raised for the purpose of supplying meat for human and animal consumption will present problems that will increase in importance as long as they exist.

Humane problems involving livestock are a hundred times more important and much more complex today than they were a hundred years ago. What can societies do to prevent or reduce this reservoir of potential cruelty? I think we can do many things.

Part 2 …

Bulletin No 3609 - Land Development In The South Eastern Wheatbelt, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson Oct 1968

Bulletin No 3609 - Land Development In The South Eastern Wheatbelt, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Interest in the development of light lands in the south-eastern wheatbelt was spurred by the many ex-servicemen seeking farms after the 1939-45 World War.

Previous attempts to develop this area had been frustrated by poor crop yields, and by the poor carrying capacity of those volunteer pastures which developed on cleared land.

Research into reasons for the poor crop results was begun in 1948-49 with trials sown by Messrs Smith and Halpin between Borden and Lake Grace. The results clearly showed the important role played by copper and zinc in successful crop growth. Since then, field trials have been conducted …

West Midlands Development : The Economics Of New Land Development, I J. Moncrieff Jan 1968

West Midlands Development : The Economics Of New Land Development, I J. Moncrieff

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE economics of new land development cannot really be separated from the financial aspects.

However, financing development is such a personal business that for general advisory purposes the distinction must be made.

For this reason, the article which follows largely avoids the financial side and is devoted to a consideration of some of the economic factors involved in the development of new land in this area.
