Sentiment Analysis Of Public Commentary On U.S. Farm Bills, Frank Tenkorang, Fletcher Ziwoya

This study applies sentiment analysis to public commentary on U.S. farm bills to assess patterns of support and opposition. Using Reddit posts from relevant subreddits, we employed two natural language processing models, VADER and RoBERTa, to evaluate sentiment over time. While both models yielded differing sentiment distributions, they revealed increased public engagement during farm bill years, particularly in 2018. Most sentiments were neutral, but negative opinions outweighed positive ones. Posts with stronger sentiments tended to attract more user interaction, especially controversial ones. The classroom pedagogies are evolving significantly with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). The students in a Food Supply Chains class completed a project for various agricultural products describing 12 factors and 7 supply chain principles. They reflected on the use of GenAI and how it impacted their knowledge and critical thinking skills. The students scored GenAI high on ‘relevancy, diverse topics, significance, and sufficiency;' the repeated use of GenAI for food supply chains enabled them recognize the importance of sustainability and ESG factors in the management of natural resources. There were differences in students use and benefits with GenAI use.

Morehead State University’s Derrickson Agricultural Complex (DAC) produces several agricultural enterprises and provides valuable hands-on experiences for students. Hay and corn are the two dominant crop enterprises which cover 58 percent of the total area. In addition, the DAC produces hay from six different farms using the crop-share leasing method. The primary objectives of this study are to (1) analyze the profitability of hay and corn production at the DAC and leased farms and (2) identify the strengths, and weaknesses of each farm to improve production efficiencies. However, limited research has been conducted on the economic impact of cherry farming. Consequently, there is a growing demand for a deeper understanding of cherries' economic contribution to the domestic economy. This study used socio-economic data from 315 cherry-producing households in Lower Hunza, GilgitBaltistan, to examine the role of cherries in community income. The relationship between farm and retail prices is critical in food supply chains. Marketing costs significantly influence both prices. Higher marketing costs reduce farm demand, lower farm prices, and increase retail prices, consequently lowering farm share of the food dollar. The USDA reports show a decline in the farm share from 18 cents in 2011 to 13.5 cents in 2021 due to rising marketing costs. This paper examines price transmission between farm and retail prices, focusing on the impact of marketing costs using historical data and the VECM. Swine health is critical to maintaining a profitable and productive swine operation. Biosecurity and sanitation are important practices that help maintain herd health. This study aimed to discover how biosecurity protocols and management practices differ between swine operations of different sizes. With diseases such as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV), Brucellosis, and Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) being common in the swine industry, a strong biosecurity protocol protects swine farmers from financial losses associated with disease outbreaks.
