Arkansas Soil Erosion And Conservation Methods In Ornamental Landscapes, Abby J. Cutsinger Apr 2024

Arkansas Soil Erosion And Conservation Methods In Ornamental Landscapes, Abby J. Cutsinger

ATU Research Symposium

This study will attempt to identify the best soil erosion mitigation methods for Arkansas ornamental landscape settings by comparing the strengths and weaknesses of known techniques. Since soil is not a renewable resource, we must apply conservation practices wherever possible, not just in agricultural settings. To determine the most effective erosion prevention techniques, this study will review soil studies conducted by the NRCS and NASA, as well as articles on best practices observed in ornamental landscape and agricultural industries. These are analyzed by comparing and contrasting techniques against known problems with Arkansas soil to determine which methods are most effective. …

Evaluating The Importance Of Biosecurity In Swine Operations, Lindsey Lemley, Lilly Rogers, Austin Calhoun Apr 2024

Evaluating The Importance Of Biosecurity In Swine Operations, Lindsey Lemley, Lilly Rogers, Austin Calhoun

ATU Research Symposium

Swine health is critical to maintaining a profitable and productive swine operation. Biosecurity and sanitation are important practices that help maintain herd health. This study aimed to discover how biosecurity protocols and management practices differ between swine operations of different sizes. With diseases such as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV), Brucellosis, and Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) being common in the swine industry, a strong biosecurity protocol protects swine farmers from financial losses associated with disease outbreaks. In 2004 alone, the estimated financial loss to PRRSV was over $761 million. Data concerning biosecurity and sanitation was collected from …

Autonomous Roadside Mower Testing And Evaluation In Digital Twin Environments, Michael Mardikes, Ethan Brown, Timothy Wiegman, Nathan Sprague, Shreyas Supe, J. T. Evans Mar 2024

Autonomous Roadside Mower Testing And Evaluation In Digital Twin Environments, Michael Mardikes, Ethan Brown, Timothy Wiegman, Nathan Sprague, Shreyas Supe, J. T. Evans

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

Modern day roadside mowing operations in Indiana are performed by contractors operating tractors that pull flex-wing mowers. These mowing operations span over 11,000 miles of road across the state and create serious risk for human operators. Autonomous mowers can provide a safer alternative, but a replacement system must demonstrate an acceptable level of trust before large-scale deployment. A high-fidelity digital-twin environment can facilitate the capability to rapidly test and evaluate platforms in their desired application, while enabling zero real-world risk, a wide range of test variables, and repeatability of a test setup. The simulation environment must be at a level …

Environmental And Agricultural Effects On Waterfowl Population In Arkansas, Caleb Sipes, Ellison Stephens, Marissa Young

ATU Research Symposium

This paper discusses some of the positive and negative effects of environmental and agricultural influences on the waterfowl population in the state of Arkansas. Waterfowl hunting has been a prominent source of revenue to the state of Arkansas for many decades. Waterfowl hunting will continue to be prominent in this state in future as long as Arkansans maintain and preserve the natural resources here as well as use our own to further progress the waterfowl industry in Arkansas. Through aerial surveying, requiring hunters to purchase licenses and stamps to legally hunt waterfowl, and conservation efforts from the Arkansas Game and …

Utilization Of Beta-Agonists On The Effects Of Marbling / Fat Deposition In Beef Cattle, Rafael Andrade, Sara Erby, Blaine Holzman Apr 2023

Utilization Of Beta-Agonists On The Effects Of Marbling / Fat Deposition In Beef Cattle, Rafael Andrade, Sara Erby, Blaine Holzman

ATU Research Symposium

In the beef industry, producers have tried to find ways to optimize production and performance for the benefit of their beef cattle operations. To do that, if they wished to, they would use modernizing technologies that are available today. With these modern technologies, such as Beta – androgenic agonists, producers have been able to utilize these to see the positive effects of marbling and fat deposition. They act to enhance lean muscle gain, increase growth rate in the animals, and increase feed efficiency without having to use extra inputs, needed supplements, or compensation for gain. By using these technologies, they …

Avian Influenza In The United States And It's Ramifications On Our Market In The Poultry Industry, Alaini C. Carrington, Jada Trotter, Savannah Sanders Apr 2023

Avian Influenza In The United States And It's Ramifications On Our Market In The Poultry Industry, Alaini C. Carrington, Jada Trotter, Savannah Sanders

ATU Research Symposium

While researching Avian Influenza (AI) in the United States, we have found that it has significantly impacted 47 states. Four main AI types have an impact on poultry farms. Avian Influenza can be reduced by taking preventative methods such as biosecurity and culling birds to have a healthy flock on the farm. Since 2022 egg-laying hens have been affected by the Avian Influenza Virus, causing egg inventories to become lower. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has affected farmers tremendously; because of this, farmers must worry about their families' source of income, their workers and the workers' families' source of income, …

Benefits Of Growth Hormone Implants In Beef Cattle, Brody Jones, Jaxsen Franco, Riley Knight Apr 2023

Benefits Of Growth Hormone Implants In Beef Cattle, Brody Jones, Jaxsen Franco, Riley Knight

ATU Research Symposium

Using growth hormone implants in beef cattle producers could combat the decreasing market supply that is currently being experienced in the United States (US). Growth hormone implants increases individual cattle weight by 15 to 20 percent, produces the same amount of product using fewer head of cattle. This study provides an insight into the benefit of using growth hormone implants in the production of beef cattle. The paper takes a look at the rising costs of input prices, cattle market supply in the US, and the effects these implants had on beef cattle of varying species and environments. Most of …

Food Inflation In Pope County, Hayden W. Garrett, Ty C. Gray, Will D. Uchtman, Stephanie M. Littlefield Apr 2023

Food Inflation In Pope County, Hayden W. Garrett, Ty C. Gray, Will D. Uchtman, Stephanie M. Littlefield

ATU Research Symposium

Although inflation is cooling off in many sectors of the US economy, food inflation continues to surge, indicating the volatility of the agri-food system. The higher food prices make it difficult for US consumers to afford everyday essential food products. The main objective of this research is to calculate food inflation in the pope county area. We utilized the consumer price index (CPI) to measure the change in prices paid by pope county consumers for food. Our preliminary analyses show that food prices in pope county are easing. Specifically, the food inflation rate in pope county declined in March 2023 …

Keywords: Machine Learning, Random Forest, Agricultural Commodities Market, Informational Impact, Efficient Market Hypothesis.

The USDA survey-based Quarterly Grain Stocks reports are the primary source of information regarding the relative supply of U.S. corn, soybeans, and wheat for the last fifty years. Previous research has examined the accuracy of the USDA stock reports and their relevancy to the market, given alternative sources of estimates (e.g., Isengildina-Massa et al., 2021). For example, private industry analysts also estimate expected quarterly grain stock reports before USDA releases their reports. …

Providing Farmers With The Legal Tools Needed To Keep The Equipment Running: An Update On The Agricultural Right To Repair Movement, Greg Nies, Bruce Elder Oct 2022

Providing Farmers With The Legal Tools Needed To Keep The Equipment Running: An Update On The Agricultural Right To Repair Movement, Greg Nies, Bruce Elder

Mountain Plains Business Conference

This presentation examines and summarizes the right to repair movement from the perspective of its origins, development, legal basis and – most significantly – its unique manifestation within an agriculture perspective. The agricultural equipment sector is more concentrated and less competitive than many other industries, while the typical farmer remains fiercely independent and self-reliant. This unique situation has led to conflict, forming the basis of the current agricultural right to repair dispute. Accordingly, the current state of the agricultural right to repair movement is examined and explained based on the recent policy, legislation, and litigation efforts employed at federal and …
