Sustainability In South Carolina: A Case Study Analysis Of Publicly-Traded South Carolina Companies Using Sustainability Reports And Esg Scores, Gwyneth K. Waddington

Senior Theses

Sustainability is one of the issues at the forefront of society. Sustainability reports and ESG scores are used to help understand the performance of companies in relation to sustainability issues. The current literature on sustainability reporting makes it clear that there is not a uniform framework for metrics to include in sustainability reports and how those reports should appear. My project uses a case study analysis of nine publicly-traded companies headquartered in South Carolina to examine how companies are portraying their sustainability efforts and asks if there are certain indicators in sustainability reports that are good predictors of the ESG …

Tracking The Donor Dollar: A Critical Examination Of Ngo Impact, Joshua Werth Apr 2023

Tracking The Donor Dollar: A Critical Examination Of Ngo Impact, Joshua Werth

Senior Honors Theses

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) comprise the backbone of civilization. Whether intended or not, governments fail to improve social situations, financial standings, and spirituality comprehensively. NGOs attempt to cover these areas. From Angola to Zambia, countless NGOs exist around the world; however, many fail due to a misplaced focus internally on the annual donations received rather than externally on the disenfranchised. Additionally, even if NGOs manage to stay afloat, they will need help procuring funds and then distributing those resources with the most effective impact for the impoverished. The honors thesis proposed will attempt to determine more effective impact measurements for NGOs, …

Women: Radically Glorified, Oppressed, Or Set Free?, Easton Finger Apr 2023

Women: Radically Glorified, Oppressed, Or Set Free?, Easton Finger

Senior Honors Theses

A woman’s identity in society has often been debated, starting from the beginning of time. The answer to this identity question has been sought in systems ranging from oppression, slavery, radical feminism, and over-exaltation of power. This thesis suggests that the value of women and their role is not found in those systems but in the knowledge of their Creator. Two questions will be posed, including how women’s identity has been previously defined and can a woman’s identity be found in her Creator God. The history of women in biblical times will be reviewed, as well as how Christ valued …

Legitimate Business As Mission Ventures And Effective Witness, Summer Rogers Apr 2023

Legitimate Business As Mission Ventures And Effective Witness, Summer Rogers

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis discusses the practice of missionaries creating cover businesses solely for visa purposes, which brings a dishonest presence and harms the ministry. In contrast, Business as Mission (BAM) is a strategic business model to bring the gospel overseas through social, economic, and spiritual impact. Through a literature review, best practices for legitimate BAM ventures are explored based on studies done by BAM professionals and experts. Research shows that Christian businesspeople can establish an authentic image and credible witness through BAM businesses that are integrated into the local community, generate a profit, and incorporate biblical principles into business operations. BAM …

How Observed Customer Mistreatment Of Supervisors Affects Employees’ Service Sabotage: A Cross-Cultural Examination From The Deontic Justice Theory, Wen Jiang, Cass Shum, Hyounae (Kelly) Min, Ye Ding Apr 2023

How Observed Customer Mistreatment Of Supervisors Affects Employees’ Service Sabotage: A Cross-Cultural Examination From The Deontic Justice Theory, Wen Jiang, Cass Shum, Hyounae (Kelly) Min, Ye Ding

Hospitality Faculty Research

Research on customer mistreatment has focused on victims’ perspectives with scant research on third-party observers’ reactions, especially their reactions to customer mistreatment of supervisors. Drawing on the deontic justice theory, this research investigates how and when customer mistreatment of supervisors impacts frontline employees. Using a mixed-method of three studies (experiment, time-lagged survey, field survey) from two countries (the U.S. and China), this research demonstrates the spillover effects of customer mistreatment of supervisors on employee’s service sabotage via moral anger. Study 1 showed that hospitality employees’ moral anger mediated the relationship between customer mistreatment of their supervisors on employees’ service sabotage. …

Light Bulb Moments: Where Do Student Entrepreneurs Get Their Ideas, Stern Neill, Mark Bieraugel Apr 2023

Light Bulb Moments: Where Do Student Entrepreneurs Get Their Ideas, Stern Neill, Mark Bieraugel

Marketing

Understanding how to support creative ideation is an important, yet, elusive, issue for marketing educators. To shed light, this study proposes ideation as a malleable state influenced by “outside-the-brain” resources. By examining venture concept ideation, this study captures the ideation–environment relationship using experience sampling to tap into the daily lives of student entrepreneurs. The findings identify how entrepreneurial ideas emerge from specific external interactions and engagements, which are contextualized using two Japanese conceptualizations of space, ba (場) and ma (間). The results inform both marketing education and entrepreneurial marketing.

Could Brand Tribes Facilitate Transformation Of Their Members?, Saeed Shobeiri, Jean-Luc Bernard

AMTP Proceedings 2023

This research aims to determine whether brand tribes could provide their members with transformational benefits. It investigates, for one of the first times, the link between two key concepts of brand tribalism and customer-level transformation. By looking closely at the individual-level outcomes of joining brand tribes, this research complements a large body of past research that has mostly emphasized collective nature of tribalism. We conducted a self-administered online targeted survey undergraduate and graduate students of a large North-American university about their preferred brand of smart phone. The results, brand tribalism was found to be a major antecedent of transformational experiences …

The Effect Of Ordering Method On Consumer Return Intentions, Garrett M. Kemp, Laura Boman Apr 2023

The Effect Of Ordering Method On Consumer Return Intentions, Garrett M. Kemp, Laura Boman

AMTP Proceedings 2023

With the rise of Covid-19, mobile ordering has become one of the most popular ways to get food. At its height, Covid-19 caused restaurants to shut down and forced businesses to move to a more mobile and delivery-friendly plan. Now, venues for concerts, large events, and sports have started to offer the option of mobile ordering food to be delivered directly to your seat. Mobile ordering has made the food service industry even more accessible; however, it has also brought to light the issue of tipping. Traditionally, tipping was only done at full-service restaurants. Now, businesses like Starbucks, Mcdonald's, and …

Physical And Emotional Impact Of Lighting Conditions In Higher Education Classrooms, Robert P. Mcdonald, Gallayanee Yaoyuneyong

AMTP Proceedings 2023

The literature review shows that researchers in different fields have long explored the impact of the physical classroom environments (e.g., lighting, temperature, classroom layout, and furniture) to identify the ideal classroom environments. When the lighting condition is poor (i.e., light levels below standards), it can cause drowsiness, leading to lower concentration and motivation, and elevated student stress. However, most studies focused on K-12 learning environments. Therefore, this study aims to specifically focus on the lighting conditions in educational facilities around a university campus in the Southeastern United States and to explore whether these lighting conditions impact students’ mental well-being, their …

AMTP Proceedings 2023

This article considers how LinkedIn training in the form of a workshop can improve a professional's personal brand by influencing self-esteem and job search efficacy by developing a LinkedIn All-Star Profile. Self-esteem and self-efficacy are two of the most highly researched social and vocational psychology aspects. While there has been some research on the impact of non-technological workshops, there needs to be more research on the effects of workshop training in these two variables on employee personal brand on social media.

Informational Content Of Factor Structures In Simultaneous Discrete Response Models, Shakeeb Khan, Arnaud Maurel, Yichong Zhang Apr 2023

Informational Content Of Factor Structures In Simultaneous Discrete Response Models, Shakeeb Khan, Arnaud Maurel, Yichong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the informational content of factor structures in discrete triangular systems. Factor structures have been employed in a variety of settings in cross sectional and panel data models, and in this paper we attempt to formally quantify their informational content in a bivariate system often employed in the treatment effects literature. Our main findings are that under the factor structures often imposed in the literature, point identification of parameters of interest, such as both the treatment effect and the factor load, is attainable under weaker assumptions than usually required in these systems. For example, we show is that an …

'99-To-1’ Property Deals: Stamp Duty Avoidance Or Honest Mistake, Vincent Ooi Apr 2023

'99-To-1’ Property Deals: Stamp Duty Avoidance Or Honest Mistake, Vincent Ooi

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article explains in detail the legal issues surrounding the recent ABSD audit and how exactly the general anti-avoidance rule and the stamp duty avoidance surcharge in the Stamp Duties Act 1929 can be invoked by the IRAS.The article highlights the fact that it may not be enough for a property buyer to show that the '99-to-1' holding was intended to enable the buyer to qualify for a home loan and not 'for stamp duty avoidance'. The property buyer must be able to answer the additional question of why the transfer of the property is 'staggered' in two stages and …

Situated at the intersection between environmental entrepreneurship and urban sustainability, our paper seeks to investigate the links between city-level green venture ecosystems and the ability of urban centres to reduce air pollution. Using a large dataset of 12,834 urban centres from around the world and their associated yearly average particulate matter (PM2.5), we show that an increase in the cumulative number of green start-ups drives the lowering of PM2.5 levels. Looking closely at the subsectors that drive the results, we observe that the urban centres which hosted increased numbers of innovators in smart grid technologies, energy efficiency and wind energy …

Running For Political Office: These Dentists Did . . . How About You? Insights From Two Dentist-Legislators, W. Erick Rupprecht Dds, Lynn Aronoff

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Michigan Dental Association encourages members to seek political office. Why? Having a member dentist hold an elected office improves the profession's visibility and builds relationships with other elected officials and community leaders who can support dentistry's goals. A dentist-legislator becomes a resource with their legislative colleagues when they debate health policy, regulations, and business initiatives. Having member dentists on the inside provides receptive ears when the Association advocates for the profession's needs and priorities.

To give insight into what public service by a dentist looks like, the Journal interviewed two colleagues who have made that commitment, State Representative Steven …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The word startup is perhaps an unlikely word that comes to mind when discussing shifting dynamics in the Middle East – this is rapidly changing. In the past two decades, Arab entrepreneurs have emerged from across the region as key players in the paradigm of national economic visions. Within these plans, innovation will become the epicenter for public-private partnerships. Such collaboration will contribute to tackling youth unemployment, the region’s most pressing contemporary problem, as well as diversifying local economies. The research delves into the complexities and history of entrepreneurship in Jordan as one of the region’s pioneering nations, examining the …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Investigating The Detriment Of Development Assistance: A Geopolitical Analysis Of Sino-Djibouti Relations Through The Lens Of China’S Belt And Road Initiative, Elizabeth Elenwo-Roger

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research paper will evaluate Africa’s past with debt accumulation, focusing on the role of the Washington Consensus spearheaded by the Bretton Woods Institutions in its failed attempts to relieve the continent’s debt distresses and further aggravate Africa’s already fractured relationship with the West. It will highlight the goals of the Belt and Road Initiative, assessing China’s South-South cooperation approach to its relations with Djibouti and the Horn of Africa. Specifically, it will investigate claims of China engaging in debt-trap diplomacy and the extent to which this term infringes upon the agency of African leaders. The general research question investigates …

The Role Of Worker-Driven Regulation In The Global Fashion Industry, Jessie Wills Apr 2023

The Role Of Worker-Driven Regulation In The Global Fashion Industry, Jessie Wills

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The global fashion industry continues to exploit workers at the bottom of its supply chains. Multinational brands pressure manufacturers to churn out products at increasingly fast rates for increasingly cheaper costs. Severe problems persist in enforcing labor standards in these factories, and methods like voluntary corporate social responsibility are aspirational at best. A newer method of enforcement, worker-driven regulation (WDR), shows promise in its improved enforceability methods and focus on worker voices. The main research question of this paper is: What are the conditions that trigger and sustain worker-driven regulation at the factory level in the apparel industry?

Research methods …

The Impact Of Interactivity On Information Processing For Virtual Tourist Destinations, Hongxiao Yu Apr 2023

The Impact Of Interactivity On Information Processing For Virtual Tourist Destinations, Hongxiao Yu

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid development of virtual reality (VR) platforms offers great potential for the widespread consumption of VR tourism offerings. This creation of tourism experiences through VR significantly impacts tourism marketing strategies. Nevertheless, unprecedented development presents research challenges to better understand the effectiveness of VR interactivity in providing dynamic virtual experiences and shaping consumers’ intention to visit actual tourism destinations. Moreover, destination marketing managers face challenges in designing interactive features to leverage VR technology to influence consumers’ decision-making. To address these challenges, this dissertation extends the heuristic-systematic model to investigate how VR interactivity influences visit intention through engaging experiences with technology …

The Impact Of Funding On Market Valuation In Technology Start-Up Firms: Implication For Open Innovation, Amril Nazir, Dina Tbaishat

All Works

Do outside funds and increased access to capital have an effect on the market valuation of technology startup firms? Should entrepreneurs prioritize outside funding to increase the values of their firms? This research seeks to answer these important questions. Given the current lack of empirical-based assessment on this topic, a causal impact analysis was conducted to draw conclusions regarding the effect of different investment types and funding amounts on market valuation. Using the Crunchbase data platform, we conducted a study of 7,481 early-stage technology startups in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 2000 to August 2022. To ensure an accurate …

Understanding Gentrification Outside Of The Global Neoliberal Perspective In Hong Kong, Ivy Lu Apr 2023

Understanding Gentrification Outside Of The Global Neoliberal Perspective In Hong Kong, Ivy Lu

Senior Theses

Globalization has impacted urban development in different parts of the world. In particular, the influence of neoliberalism has had a significant impact on gentrification. The academic hegemony of the English language further compounds the complexities of overextending the scope of this definition when applying it outside of its original Anglo-American contexts. East Asia, specifically Hong Kong, presents a unique case study due to its local context historically, politically and market-wise, as well as culturally; all of which make it valuable to study urban development phenomena in the region. However, identifying the indicators of neoliberalism and gentrification in Hong Kong is …

Senior Theses

Advertising has evolved significantly throughout the past decade, lending to the current usage of direct response, social media, and online methods of advertising. Considering how these tactics have changed in recent years and how restaurant marketing, specifically, changes in response to a college demographic, companies must consider more in-depth communication plans. This thesis will identify the most effective methods of marketing restaurants in the United States and determine how a college demographic changes the techniques utilized in marketing communication plans. Furthermore, this thesis will develop a comprehensive strategic communication plan for a new Asian restaurant, Noodz, located in Columbia, South …
