Los críticos literarios han realizado la visión de Salinas de la puertorriqueñidad. Dos obras de Salinas "El contemplado" y "Cartas de viaje" muestran un gran afán por implementar la españolidad como parte de la isla, pero también critica el imperio norteamericano en las prácticas sociales.

"En la novela Yo-Yo Boing Giannina Braschi plantea un bilingüismo e identidad nomádica. Huye del concepto de permanencia y arraigo, definiéndose en sus personajes como un ser errante y proponiendo una yuxtaposición lingüística propia. Braschi utiliza un code-switching para subrayar la complejidad de vivir simultáneamente en más de una cultura y una lengua. El concepto teórico que da impulso a este artículo es la definición sobre la conciencia nómada que plantea Rosi Braidotti. Throughout the decades, poetry has served as a literary vehicle to express and emphasize the emotions of a person. It has provided the substantial drive for the developed and the structure of individuals dedicated to a cause. This is the case of the Puerto Rican poet Luis Pales Matos, a man that used this method to make known the racial differences he found in his country and to clear a way for the Island's independence. For Chicana/o cultural critics, the border paradigm has defined the boundaries of writing and experience in contemporary Chicana/o autobiography, and has constituted a valuable contribution to American Studies. In fact, the unique voices coming from Chicana/o autobiography are expressed through a network of cultural codes involving liminality and hybridity, the rewriting of borders, and the challenging of boundaries created by mainstream cultures and official truth. By the end of 1915, two inexpensive book series devoted to the diffusion of colonial and nineteenth-century texts flooded the shelves of Argentine bookstores. Their deliberately resonant and all-encompassing names - La Biblioteca Argentina (The Argentine Library) and La Cultura Argentina (Argentine Culture) - were unmistakable signs of their nationalist character and aims. Developed respectively by Ricardo Rojas and José lngenieros, two of the most important intellectuals of Centennial Argentina, the nearly simultaneous launch of both series also underscored the editors' enduring competition to promote their contrasting versions of the nation's political and cultural past. Critics do not agree on what constitutes the interest of the works of Schwarz- Bart. However, four major tendencies are apparent in the many critical studies of her works: some are interested in the "creole experience" her novels are said to portray, others in the "feminine experience", while others again in the "mythological" dimension and the question of what is borrowed from oral literature. These different approches interpret the works of Schwarz-Bart essentially in the perspective of "testimony" and, even though there is a consensus as to the originality of her writing, there is little analysis of the specific techniques …

Abstract: Who is a migrant writer? That’s the question asked by Québec institutions which legitimatize literature, including journalistic critics and scholars. The aim of our paper is to make an inventory of the terms employed by these institutions to name Émile Ollivier (1940-2002), an Haitian novelist who has been exiled in Québec since the mid-sixties. These terms reveal a discontent and vagueness in the attempt to link the novelist to a nationality or a country. Between appropriation and dismissal, this multiplicity symbolizes a resistance to frankly consider this writer as a Quebecer. We also refer to the "in-between" of all …

In recent years, travel writing, once considered a minor genre, has been the subject of increased critical attention. Critics have focused on the ways in which travel narratives serve both to construct and to destabilize notions of identity at the individual, regional, and national levels. As the books under consideration here show, travel narratives produced by Caribbean and Latin American women writers in particular, demonstrate the malleability of subject positions, as the women travelers interrogate their shifting roles vis-à-vis the metropolis as well as male-dominated writing traditions.

The Living World, Politics, And Nation: Nature And Discourse In The Poetry Of Nicolás Guillén, Mark J. Mascia

Through an analysis of key examples of Guillén's use of nature throughout his poetry, this article presents the argument that they all are fundamentally rooted in a configuration of nature as a living being and in an understanding of humanity's place as part of nature. For Guillén, nature is not simply something that he merely appreciates as a theme; rather, it is a vital element central to his view of the worid and to his development as a writer. Beyond The Nation: Issues Of Identity In The Contemporary Narrative Of Cuban Women Writing (In) The Diaspora, Yvette Fuentes

This dissertation traces the narrative of contemporary Cuban women writers from their early work published in Cuba through their Diaspora narratives. It explores the discursive and narrative techniques that contemporary Cuban women deploy in their narratives to challenge Cuba's dominant cultural constructions of national and gendered identity. I posit that contemporary Cuban women's narratives produced on and off the island display aislamiento (isolation) that serves as a means of "talking back" to Cuba's patriarchal discourses. The introduction presents an overview of recent debates on nation, gender and identity within the context of contemporary Cuban literary history and feminist theory. Chapter …

Investigations of the sexual Other generally attempt to explain sexual practices by characterizing their practitioners as "homosexual" or "gay." Jossianna Arroyo, Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Michigan, went beyond this approach during her March 28 colloquium presentation, "Brazilian Homoerotics: Cultural Subjectivity and Representation in Gilberto Freyre." Arroyo explores not just sexual practices but also the construction of the Brazilian nation through a reading of Gilberto Freyre's two novels, Dona Sinha e o Filho Padre (1964) and O Outro Amor de Dr. Paulo (1977).

In her talk, "Families of Desire: Migration and Sexuality in New York's Caribbean Enclaves," Yolanda Martinez-San Miguel explored the representation of same-sex affective and sexual relationships in the works of one lesbian and two gay Hispanic Caribbean authors, all of whom migrated to New York from their island of origin and who portray this Diasporic experience in their writing. Her presentation forms part of a broader, book-length project on cultural representations of migration among Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and New York, including literature, popular music, graffiti, and photography.

It is by now a commonplace that in nineteenth-century Spanish American literature the family serves as a metaphor for the nation and that authors express their political agendas through allegories of courtship and marriage. In such readings, potential love matches symbolize the reconciliation of contesting political or ethnic groups and point toward ways for the newly-formed Spanish American nations to negotiate difference without falling into civil war. This article examines the ways in which Neruda poeticizes and celebrates different foodstuffs in his Odas Elementales, and connects these ways to the larger themes present in his general corpus of work. These odes, which ennoble and glorify everyday food and drink items, are treated as animate, living entities, and are at times frequently linked to a political or social cause as well.

Pasos y Pasajeros marked a transition from Uslar Pietri’s previous stories. Whilst retaining his accustomed rural geographical environment and civil war historical environment for some stories, he introduces us to urban landscapes and contemporary settings in many others. The anonymity of time and places in earlier works, gives way to defined places, periods and social environments, perhaps reflecting the evolution of Venezuela from a subsistence agrarian economy to a fledgling urban society, enabled by the exploitation of the country's oil reserves. Esteban Echeverria's short story "El matadero" is generally acknowledged as a literary masterpiece in miniature. It is widely anthologized and has been called the inaugural work of Argentine short fiction, if not the first Latin American short story. Seymour Menton positions it as the first story in his influential anthology El cuento hispanoamericano and calls it "una verdadera obra de arte" (34); David William Foster refers to it as "the founding text of Argentine fiction" (Sexual Textualities 135).
