Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

This quarterly feature provides an annotated bibliography of current documentary editions on subjects in the fields of American and English history, literature, and culture. It is generally restricted to first editions of works edited from manuscript and published in English, but significant exceptions may occasionally be made. A separate annual list of other scholarship and literature published by members of the Association will also be compiled if interest warrants it.

The Institute for Editing Historical Documents has been meeting every sununer since 1972. More than four hundred editors, archivists, teaching faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars have benefited from its teaching sessions, tutorials, and good fellowship. The institute has become an institution. Those who have spent a week or two in Madison (since 1978) or an earlier venue, whether as campers or as counselors, are nearly unanimous in agreeing that the experience was professionally valuable. But aside from the comments on each session written by the interns, there has been no systematic evaluation of the institute. This article attempts to …

My entry into the world of Lewis and Clark was quite indirect. My wife Faye saw an ad for the editorial position in a professional journal in 1978 and encouraged me to apply. That I was to be unemployed the next year was a compelling incentive. My professional interests in the American West, Native Americans, and historical editing gave me an edge. In fact, I was just completing editing the papers of Chief John Ross of the Cherokees, supported for four years by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives.

For quite some time I have been puzzled by the role of genetics in explaining both human characteristics and behavior. This curiosity led to several odd occupations for a philosopher/ editor. With a biochemist, I team-teach an honors course in genetics, and recently I became a faculty member and administrator in a college of medicine as well as a professor of pediatrics in a hospital-clinic research institution. These are not positions usually open to editors or philosophers, and one might wonder how they came about.

The strength of Brooks's friendship pervades his letters published in Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren: A Literary Correspondence. Just as obvious is the strength of Warren's attachment to Brooks. Throughout these letters, extending from 1933 to 1988, mostly concerned with literary and professional matters, a tone of respectful deference obtains, but breaking through that tone quite often are glimpses of their heartfelt affection for one another. If, as Harold Bloom suggests. One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) is a "supreme fiction," it achieves that status as it reformulates early modern narratives of self-discovery and dominion. Garcia Márquez signals his intention of rewriting the great Renaissance narratives of discovery when he begins his 1982 Nobel Prize acceptance speech with an account of Antonio Pigafetta's Viaggio attorno al mondo (1522). As a navigator aboard Magellan's 1519–21 voyage around the world, Pigafetta kept a log that Garcia Márquez categorizes as an ancestor "of our contemporary novels." Twenty years ago, at the first annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in Princeton, New Jersey, Arthur Link stated that documentary editing is "the most important scholarly work being done in the United States, and, if well done, it will be the most enduring." Last year, the distinguished historian Edmund S. Morgan echoed Link when he wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the 154 volumes produced by the Founding Fathers editions "stand as the single most important achievement of American historical scholarship in this century."

• gain better intellectual control over our documents

My title is somewhat facetious, but not completely. There has been a profound shift in the direction and underlying assumptions of editorial theory and practice during the thirty years in which I have been practicing this craft, and my purpose here is to make some general observations on this topic. I start with a warning, though: most of my comments apply to textual or literary editing, not to documentary editing as it is practiced by literary editors.

In a paper presented at the 1998 annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing and published in this issue of Documentary Editing, Michael Stevens discussed advances in the craft, professionalism, and legacy of the field over the past twenty years. The book that he and Steven Burg have written is an example of the interconnections among these advances. For a craft to improve, its practitioners must become more professional and reflective about their practices. Nhprc Invites Applications For Documentary Editing Fellowships

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is now accepting applications from individuals for its Documentary Editing Fellowships, which provide training in historical documentary editing at projects supported by the Commission. Contingent upon the availability of sufficient Fiscal Year 1999 funds, two fellowships will be awarded for the 1999-2000 academic year. The stipend for an editing fellow is $41,250 (includes fringe benefits). Fellowships are for an eleven-month period beginning between August and October 1999. In addition to attending the Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents held in June 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin, fellows will have some funds available …
