Cardinal Principles, Historical And Archival, Warren M. Billings

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

This first convention of our associtation invites observations on the present state of documentary editing. As a branch of learning, documentary editing has come of age, for underlying its practice are principles and values that make it as distinctive a field of inquiry as say quantitative history or literary criticism. That it has matured is due in no small measure to scholars like our president and president-elect, who rank among the pioneers of modern editorial methods. Documentary editing has gained in popularity, as witness the growth of this organization in just its first year of existence or the increasing number …

Editors' Concern With Archivists In Crisis, Lester J. Cappon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

On 2 July 1979 a new administrator of GSA, Admiral Rowland G. Freeman III, took office after a distinguished operational and administrative career in the Navy, including a recent "college presidency" as commandant of the Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He has assembled the facts of life concerning NARS with the aid of detailed memoranda from the acting archivist, who has unobtrusively injected between the lines some much-needed advice. In pursuing his willful course the administrator does not have to contend with a knowledgeable archivist of the United States, since the position is vacant. Besides, by law …

Selection And Annotation: Deciding Alone, Barbara Oberg

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

I am interested that the Association for Documentary Editing would have a panel on the solo editor, because since reading Don Higginbotham's piece in the March issue of the ADE Newsletter the idea of the solo editor as a particular species of the genus of historical editor has intrigued me. As the single, sole, solo editor of the Papers of David Hartley, and as the associate editor of The Papers . of Philip Mazzei, I am presently both a solo editor and a team editor. I feel, therefore, sensitive to the difficulties which the solo editor shares with other editors, …

Editors' Dialogue: Reading The Continental Congress Men's Mail, Paul H. Smith, Brent Tarter

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

For this feature, which is designed to promote that exchange of ideas for which the Association for Documentary Editing exists, the reviewer was instructed to focus his comments on two aspects of the work under examination--one thing done well and one thing that might have been done differently. Admittedly, when the perfect editor produces the perfect edition the flaw in this contrived format shall stand exposed. Yet, even when that perfect edition comes to hand we mortal editors are likely to benefit when one of our number, forced to write about something "that might have been done differently," describes those …

The Editor And Word Processing Equipment, Larry I. Bland Jan 1980

The Editor And Word Processing Equipment, Larry I. Bland

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The nature of the editor's task frequently forces her to acquire greater knowledge of book production than the normal author, who gladly relinquishes technical worries to the publisher's staff. Necessity is frequently the chief motivating factor and osmosis the method in the editor's acquisition of this esoteric knowledge. Not surprisingly, given the financial resources involved, editors in the commercial sector have been quicker to adopt the latest technology to their tasks than have editors in the low-budget, subsidized, money-losing academic sector. The documentary editor, if she or he hopes _somehow to cope with income evaporation and cost inflation, must familiarize …

Errata: Being The Correction Of A Singular Transposition With Apologies From The Transpositor To His Readers, Jon Kukla

Mellon Foundation Makes Large Editing Grant Jan 1980

Mellon Foundation Makes Large Editing Grant

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York City has granted $425,000 to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in support of historical editing projects of five Founding Fathers: John Adams (and his family), Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington. The grant is intended to give the editors and sponsoring institutions a three-year period in which to develop other bases of financial support, as funds from federal grant-making agencies, such as the NHPRC are not expected to keep pace with rising editorial and production costs. The NHPRC will administer the Mellon Foundation award, making separate annual …

Comprehensive Text Processing And The Papers Of Henry Laurens, David R. Chesnutt Jan 1980

Comprehensive Text Processing And The Papers Of Henry Laurens, David R. Chesnutt

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The Laurens Papers will publish its last traditional, hot type volume about fifteen months from now. With the publication of volume 9 in February 1981, the project will have completed an almost comprehensive edition of Lauren's papers prior to the Revolution. Yet these nine volumes contain only one-third of the Laurens papers. Another eight thousand· documents remain to be published. The initial publication plan developed in the 1960s called for a series of highly selected volumes to cover the Revolution and later periods. However, the importance of those materials led to a revised publication plan calling for six . printed …

Donor Establishes Award To Honor Boyd

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The Association for Documentary Editing recently received $500 to establish the Julian P. Boyd Award . This is intended to serve as a memorial to Boyd that will reflect both the breadth of his interests and his concern for excellence. The award will be given every three years to honor a distinguished contribution to knowledge of American history and culture. The donor, who prefers to be anonymous, intends to make further contributions to the award fund but not necessarily to support it single-handedly.

Errata: Second In A Seemingly Endless Series, Jon Kukla

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Amid our reflections upon the wisdom of the Association's founders who gave this office a one-year term, and amid recollections of that rare whiff of summer breeze that swept across our Richmond dining room one weekend and blew all the pasted-up pages on the floor just before they were given their numbers, we apologize again to contributors and readers and note a few of the significant transpositions and other unplanned features of our May Newsletter.

The system which I described in the opening part of my paper at Princeton was one in which the central computer is used primarily for the storage and manipulation of files. We now have a National Endowment for the Humanities grant that supports the development of a new series of programs which will allow us to automatically encode our computer files for typesetting. We have done further testing of this concept, and a report on those tests appears below.

Documentary Reviewing Reviewed: A Survey Of The Book Review Policies Of Selected Historical Journals, Gregg L. Lint Jan 1980

Documentary Reviewing Reviewed: A Survey Of The Book Review Policies Of Selected Historical Journals, Gregg L. Lint

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Book reviews in many ways are more important for the documentary publication than the monograph. In the latter case the book is published, reviewed, and in a sense forgotten. Multiple volume documentary editions, published over a long period, should receive and, indeed, require constant review, each new volume being compared with the preceding ones. The importance of reviews is no less for smaller selective editions of only a few volumes or on microforms. For the documentary edition, much more a reference book than the monograph, reviews should inform potential users of its utility and help to maintain quality.

Errata: One For The Road, Jon Kukla

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

In this fourth number of volume two of the Newsletter, we take our leave by apologizing for a typographical error in the ballot distributed with the September Newsletter. Although the slate of nominees was rendered correctly in the text, a vintage Tredegar Company typewriter (bought no doubt at a Confederate army surplus store) misspelled Michael Richman's name and prepared a ballot that read Michael Richmond. We apologize for that.

Documentary Editing: A Bibliography, Ross W. Beales Jr. Jan 1980

Documentary Editing: A Bibliography, Ross W. Beales Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Documentary editing has achieved unprecedented importance in American historical scholarship since the publication in 1950 of the first volume of Julian P. Boyd's edition of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Thanks to the support of state and federal government, foundations, and universities and to the labors of a generation of editors, scores of letterpress and microfilm editions have been completed or are in progress. These editions are noteworthy for their comprehensiveness and high standards of scholarship as well as for their cost. The rapid expansion of documentary editing has been accompanied by the appearance of an extensive literature on all …

A Dialogue: Peter Shaw And Robert J. Taylor On Editing The Adamses, Peter Shaw, Robert J. Taylor Jan 1980

A Dialogue: Peter Shaw And Robert J. Taylor On Editing The Adamses, Peter Shaw, Robert J. Taylor

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

This dialogue is a feature of the Newsletter intended to promote that exchange of ideas for which the Association of Documentary Editing exists. Mr. Shaw was asked to focus his comments both on things done well and on things that might have been done differently-the latter request being an invitation to describe those alternatives to which an editor may, rightly, have said No. The review, with Mr. Shaw's name deleted, was sent to Mr. Taylor, who was asked to comment on the observations. Again, the intention is to foster instructive dialogue. Although the etiquette of some scholarly periodicals suggests that …

The Education Of Editors, Fredson Bowers Jan 1980

The Education Of Editors, Fredson Bowers

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Ever since the pre-meeting of this organization that I attended in Lawrence, Kansas, the association of historian-editors and of literature-editors has seemed to me to be an auspicious one. Each of our sides has a chance to discuss its own special disciplinary problems in a necessary and useful manner, but always with the consciousness that we are also talking to a similarly oriented group, though in another field. However, in addition, I note that some programming has deliberately fostered what it may be pompous to call "cross-fertilization" but what at least offers the opportunity to survey the one discipline's general …

Where We Stand Now And Where We Might Go, Arthur S. Link Jan 1980

Where We Stand Now And Where We Might Go, Arthur S. Link

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Incomplete though my own knowledge and wisdom are, this is the time, above all others, when we need to take a hard look at ourselves and what we are doing and not doing; that what we need is honest if unpleasant self-scrutiny, not self-congratulation. The love of God is the beginning of wisdom; but we can neither love God nor acquire wisdom until we are honest about ourselves. Let me hasten to say that the following observations about our deficiencies as documentary editors apply exclusively, I think it is fair to say, to those of us who work in materials …
