Confessions Of A Deceitful Correspondent, Mary Jo Kline Dec 2002

Confessions Of A Deceitful Correspondent, Mary Jo Kline

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

In evaluating personal correspondence, most editors must spend considerable time speculating on authorial intention and the responses of the women and men who were the intended audience for each letter. Tonight I shall discuss what may be learned from an archive of letters where little such informed guesswork is necessary. At least on my part.

Ade Treasurer's Report

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. There has been an increase in the general budget of $7,401, a gain of 14 percent for the year, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $60,082. A portion of this increase is due to an overage of $1,535 from the 2001 annual conference in Raleigh. Most of the increase, however, is due to the generous contributions of our members who renewed their memberships at higher levels or made contributions to the association. We can thank our members for their generosity, which makes possible a sound financial situation. Moreover, in spite of …

The Ideal Of Professional Housekeeping: Review Of Catharine E. Beecher And Harriet Beecher Stowe, The American Woman S Home. Edited By Nicole Tonkovich., Glenna R. Schroeder-Lein

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

When sisters Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe published The American Woman's Home, or, Principles of Domestic Science; Being a Guide to the Formation and Maintenance of Economical, Healthful, Beautiful and Christian Homes in 1869 as both a textbook for girls' schools and a home reference work, the new book quickly became the standard in its field. It replaced, and drew heavily from, Catharine's earlier Treatise on Domestic Economy (1841). In addition, the sisters used material from columns written by Harriet, and in some instances copiously quoted male authorities on certain subjects. The result was not a book to …

Scholarly Editions And The National Endowment For The Humanities, Bruce Cole

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Good morning. It's a pleasure to be here. I am an admirer and grateful user of a number of documentary editions produced by people in this room. On a small scale, as an editor of a scholarly edition of Ridolfi's The Life of Titian, I experienced the rigors and rewards of your special kind of academic labor. The work is painstaking, repetitive, sometimes tedious. For many editions, scholars must invest decades in close reading, collaborative research, and careful transcription.

But your work has permanence and resonance. It is significant that some scholarly editions are published on paper meant to last …

Selling The Civil War In Art And Memoir: Review Of Private Robert Knox Sneden, Eye Of The Storm: A Civil War Odyssey, Ed. Charles F. Bryan, Jr., And Nelson D. Lankford., John David Smith

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Despite the economic twists and turns of scholarly V publishing, presses can bank on selling Civil War documentary editions. Like books on sex and the Nazis, Civil War titles satisfy a seemingly insatiable appetite of readers both at home and abroad. This is especially true for handsomely illustrated memoirs like Eye of the Storm: A Civil War Odyssey, edited by Charles F. Bryan, Jr., and Nelson D. Lankford of the Virginia Historical Society. Eye of the Storm is an edition of watercolor images drawn by and the Civil War memoir of Robert Knox Sneden (1832-1918). Heretofore an anonymous figure, Sneden …

Mack And Ilona S. Mack., Lance Schachterle

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Motivated by his interest in Francis Lieber's importance in the hIstory of the University of South Carolina, as well as Lieber's reflections on European works of art, Charles R. Mack, professor of Art History at South Carolina, with his wife Ilona S. Mack, has edited from manuscript the journal Lieber kept for much of his European "sabbatical" of 1844-45. The extended title provided by the editors advances their views of the significance of Lieber's journal and implies a potential readership for their text. Indeed, the editorial claim that Lieber was "one of the nineteenth-century's most influential minds" is bold. More …

Edition And Facsimile Publishing The Correspondence Of Carl Linnaeus On The World Wide Web, Tomas Anfält

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne as he was called after his ennoblement in 1762, is Sweden's most famous scientist. Linnaeus is primarily known for having created the nomenclature for plants, published for the first time in Species plantarum in 1753. Born in 1707 in southern Sweden, he studied at the University of Lund and later at Uppsala where he became professor of medicine in 1741. Before his academic appointment, he had a remarkable international career resulting from the introduction of his Systema naturae, published in its first edition in 1735 in Amsterdam. Within less than a decade, most of …

Limber Jim Of Andersonville: A Note On Annotation, Robert Scott Davis Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Annotation enhances the value of documentary editions, which is in part why early publications without such notes frequently confused readers, especially those with limited background knowledge. In modem documentary editions annotations provide important historical references, which means that misidentifications, especially when copied repeatedly, can have lasting negative impact.

Sir William Berkeley's Discourse And View Of Virginia: A Note On Its Authorship, Warren M. Billings

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Sir William Berkeley (1605-1677), long-time governor of Virginia is known to history mainly for his part in Bacon's Rebellion, an episode that forever stained an otherwise noteworthy reputation. Of a West Country family, he took degrees at the University of Oxford before making a tour of the Continent and finding a place at the court of Charles I. He remained a courtier until lack of advancement led him to seek a fresh start somewhere else, and he used his connections to win appointment as governor of Virginia in 1641. Save for the eight years of the Interregnum (1652-1660), he was …

Dear Carlo, Dear Langston: An Epistolary Friendship: Review Of Rememher Me To Harlem: The Letters Of Langston Hughes And Carl Van Vechten. Edited By Emily Bernard, Christopher C. De Santis

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

A good deal of scholarship over the past thirty years has been devoted to Hughes's life and writings, particularly to his poetry and fiction and to his status as one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. In time for his hundredth birthday in 2002, the University of Missouri Press is completing publication of The Collected works of Langston Hughes, a seventeen-volume collection that will ensure wide access to most of Hughes's writings for generations to come. Nevertheless, there is one genre in Hughes's vast oeuvre-the personal letter-that has gone largely unnoticed. Hughes was an avid letter writer, generating …

A Note On The Text Of Lincoln's Second Inaugural, Douglas L. Wilson Jun 2002

A Note On The Text Of Lincoln's Second Inaugural, Douglas L. Wilson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address is perhaps as familiar and frequently read as any text in American English. Engraved in stone on the North wall of the Lincoln Memorial in 701 words, it is a text that many of Lincoln's countrymen can recite from memory and has often been called "greatest speech." For the other leading candidate for that honor, the Gettysburg Address, there are five known copies in Lincoln's handwriting, none of which is exactly the same. It is said to be a restful day in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress when no one turns up …
