The Steven Rappaport Collection, Brooklyn College

Finding Aids

Steven Rappaport lived right next to Brooklyn College on Bedford Avenue. His family moved to 2981 Bedford Avenue in 1944 when Steven was three years old and the family lived there until 1970. An avid photographer, Mr. Rappaport took photographs of the Brooklyn College campus from the windows of his family’s home.

This small collection contains material related to Brooklyn College and the development of the surrounding neighborhood. This includes negatives of campus buildings including Ingersoll, Roosevelt, and Boylan Halls. These photographs were taken by Mr. Rappaport from 1969 to 1970, mostly from his home at 2981 Bedford Ave. There …

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

This research sheds light on the complex artistry of Korean-born photographer Nikki S. Lee. Although Lee's work initially appears straightforward and casual, this essay explores how photographs in "The Hip Hop Project" and "The Tourist Project" actually reinforce and critique specific cultural stereotypes. In performing different ethnic and cultural identities for her photographs, Lee also investigates what it means to one's own identity to be labeled part of a specific community.

As an anti-corruption journalist in Afghanistan, Aarash’s family’s life was threatened by warlords. His car was shot at, their guesthouse was bombed, and later when they were threatened at gunpoint, they tried to make a new life in India. But in India, they discovered difficulties in obtaining permanent visas so they had return to Kabul where they hid at a friend’s house for 20 days while obtaining documentation to flee to Turkey. Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Photographer Edward Weston was famously able to capture unexpected beauty—no matter if his subject was fruit or human. This essay locates Weston's artistic vision within the modernist movement of the first half of the twentieth century and uses two well-known images to illustrate Weston's unique talent for transcending the boundaries between human and nonhuman, animate and inanimate, being and nonbeing in his desire to encourage the experience of introspection and contemplation in viewers.

In 2005, a group of photographers stood alongside the people of the small town of Bil’in, in the West Bank, and documented their fight to prevent the Israeli government from building the West Bank Barrier. Inspired by what they had seen in Bil’in, the photographers decided to form Activestills, a collective whose work has become vital in documenting the struggle against Israeli occupation and the attempt to continue with everyday life in extraordinary circumstances.

Fashion Photography On Social Media: Insights From Hong Kong Fashion Image Producers, Athena Choi

This study draws on fashion and culture theories to explore the influence of visual sharing culture on social media in fashion. The objective is to interpret the perceived creative values and the meanings of such cultural phenomenon from the perspective of fashion media industry in Hong Kong. In-depth interviews, in the exploratory semi-structured format, were adopted in which 20 fashion image producers in Hong Kong were interviewed regarding their increasing involvement in professional fashion image making and blogging.
