A Collection Of Italian Opera Libretti In The Syracuse University Libraries, Aubrey S. Garlington Jr. Apr 1977

A Collection Of Italian Opera Libretti In The Syracuse University Libraries, Aubrey S. Garlington Jr.

The Courier

In this article, Aubrey S. Garlington, Jr. explains the historical tension between the composer of the opera and its librettist, arguing that although the adulation of the composer has steadily risen in modern history, there cannot be an opera without a libretto. He also notes that 18th and early 19th century libretti are becoming more important in musicology, and analyzes a collection of Italian libretti that can be found at Syracuse University's Bird Library.

If I'D Been Polish, I Guess I'D Be Playing Polkas: An Examination Of The Social Contexts Of Traditional Irish Music In Rochester, New York, George Stoner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Anthropologists, folklorists and popular writers have, in general, neglected to describe. the social contexts in which traditional Irish music is played. Although the dance was probably the most important context for traditional Irish music in Rochester, as elsewhere in the United States and Ireland, interest among Irish-born Americans and Irish- Americans in traditional dancing has waned. At present, the most important social contexts for Irish music in Rochester are the session, the Feis, and various representational contexts. The session is by far the most important, and has developed as interest in the dance has declined. Unlike the dance, it is …

The Life And Songs Of John Danyel, Sally J. Wylie Jan 1972

The Life And Songs Of John Danyel, Sally J. Wylie

Masters Theses

The lute song or "ayre" as it was usually spelled by its Elizabethan and early Jacobean composers was a type of English song whose melody was predominant and its accompaniment carefully composed. It was usually accompanied by the lute and often the viol doubled the bass line. The term "ayre" or "aire" was used by English writers of the seventeenth century in the sense of key or mode. The texture of the lute song was generally homophonic and much simpler than that of the polyphonic madrigal. Of course, lutenist-song composers like John Dowland and John Danyel often used all of …

The Lieder Of Richard Strauss, Gary Dwight Welch Jul 1969

The Lieder Of Richard Strauss, Gary Dwight Welch

All Master's Theses

There have been many works written about the Lieder of Brahms, Schubert, et cetera. However, no one has chosen to write about the Lieder of Richard Strauss. The writer has set out to gain a more thorough knowledge of the Strauss techniques. To find possible relationships between his vocal and instrumental lines, his opera and song and to see how the German language affects or does not affect the vocal line of the Lieder.

Courtly Love Elements In The Child Ballads: A Study In Origins, Fannie Lewis Jan 1969

Courtly Love Elements In The Child Ballads: A Study In Origins, Fannie Lewis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The traditional ballad, the genre of the above poetry, has been a subject of much controversy and speculation, especially regarding its origin. The problem of origin is not likely to be solved unless much more evidence is found. Among the many theories are communal authorship, and individual poet; humble and oral origin, and sophisticated and literary origin. Studies of linguistics, of ballad refrain, and of carole continue the attempt to discover ballad genesis. However, a very different approach perhaps can be used to determine the origin of some ballads, particularly the romantic ballads; that approach is to use the courtly …

Use Of The Simultaneous Cross-Relation By Sixteenth Century English And Continental Composers, Tim Montgomery Jan 1968

Use Of The Simultaneous Cross-Relation By Sixteenth Century English And Continental Composers, Tim Montgomery

Honors Theses

The principle of the simultaneous cross-relation in vocal music has generally and commonly been associated with the English composers of the sixteenth century. This assumption has been more specifically connected with secular music, namely the English madrigal. To find the validity of this assumption in relation to both secular and sacred music I have compared the available vocal music of three English composers, two major and one minor: Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), William Byrd (1543-1623), and Thomas Whythorne (1528-1596). In deciding whether the simultaneous cross-relation was an aspect of English music exclusively, I examined vocal music of three composers of the …
