The Triumph Of Timelessness Over Time In Hindemith's "Turandot Scherzo" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson Jan 1996

The Triumph Of Timelessness Over Time In Hindemith's "Turandot Scherzo" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson

Music Faculty Publications

Hindemith's title of his four-movement von Weber suite of 1943 poses a problem. The composer's characteristic reticence about his sources delayed their documentation for some twenty years, whereupon it was found that the Symphonic Metamorphosis was based, not only on themes, but on complete pieces. Rather than "thematic transformation," the "metamorphosis" of the title would thus be more accurately regarded as "recomposition," in which changes of tone system, timbre, harmony, rhythm, and form, in addition to the melody itself, transform every level and component of the original composition's structure. This study attempts to demonstrate how Hindemith achieves such a metamorphosis …

Blues For You Johnny: Johnny Dodds And His "Wild Man Blues" Recordings Of 1927 And 1938, Gene H. Anderson Jan 1996

Blues For You Johnny: Johnny Dodds And His "Wild Man Blues" Recordings Of 1927 And 1938, Gene H. Anderson

Music Faculty Publications

Shortly after Johnny Dodd's death Sidney Bechet invited Johnny's brother to join his New Orleans Feetwarmers in a recording honoring Bechet's hometown musical colleague and lifelong friend. Although Baby Dodds pronounced "Blues for You, Johnny," recorded in Chicago on September 6, 1940, a "fine tribute," Down Beat found vocalist Herb Jeffries "from hunger on blues." A more fitting memorial would have been "Wild Man Blues" cut by Bechet a few months previously. Said to be his favorite number, "Wild Man Blues" was recorded by Dodds three times in 1927 and once again in 1938. This study examines Johnny Dodds's style …

The Invention Of "African Rhythm", Kofi Agawu Oct 1995

The Invention Of "African Rhythm", Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

"African ryhthm" was invented in the 1950s when, thanks to pioneering research by the Reverend A. M. Jones, Alan Merriam, Gilbert Rouget, Erich von Hornbostel, and John Blacking, among others, "African music" was construed as an essentially rhythmic phenomenon. Three decades and a sizable body of empirical research later, it is easy to see that an overriding ideology of difference (between "Africa" and the "West") motivated these early efforts. This essay reinvents "African rhythm" not by denying its own ideological construction but by engaging in an imaginary dialogue with earlier researchers in an effort to concretize that which was missing …

Scottish And Irish Elements Of Appalachian Fiddle Music, Matthew S. Emmick Mar 1995

Scottish And Irish Elements Of Appalachian Fiddle Music, Matthew S. Emmick

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This paper is designed to serve as a general introduction to the topic and is not meant to be a definitive resource. The ideas presented here deal with general characteristics which serve as a basis for comparison of the three fiddle styles. A more in-depth study which examines stylistic traits peculiar to small geographic regions within Scotland, Ireland, and Appalachia is needed to give a more complete picture of the Celtic influence on the fiddle traditions of the Southern mountains.

Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell Jan 1995

Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Over the past ten years there has been a considerable amount of renewed interest in the life and work of Australian-born composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks who wrote five operas and a substantial body of chamber music. Although most of her career as a composer was accomplished abroad, her works were a significant contribution to the development of Australian opera. There is a growing body of literature written about Peggy Glanville-Hicks, but nothing substantial has been written about her last great work, Sappho. The purpose of this minor thesis, therefore, is to examine this last grand, yet unperformed opera. This thesis will …

Musical Metamorphoses In Hindemith's "March" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson Oct 1994

Musical Metamorphoses In Hindemith's "March" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson

Music Faculty Publications

From the composer we learn nothing about his approaches to the construction of this piece or about specific methods of musical metamorphosis. Hindemith, in fact, considered such knowledge useless, as he trenchantly observed in an early autobiographical note: " ... for people with ears my things are perfectly easy to understand, so an analysis is superfluous. For people without ears such cribs can't help." Indeed, one is struck, not by the differences, but by the similarities between the March and its prototype, von Weber's Marcia from Huit pièces for piano duet, Op. 60, No. 7, composed in 1819. But while …

The Genesis Of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, Gene H. Anderson

Music Faculty Publications

Although far from overlooked by jazz writers, the origins of Oliver's Creole Band remain confused and obscure. This article attempts to clarify the Creole Band's lineage by collating and interpreting relevant material from oral histories, newspapers, census records, photographs, and other primary sources. To the extent that there may exist undiscovered and unexamined documents, these findings must remain incomplete and should be considered a report in progress.

Spanish Music In The Twentieth Century [Book Review], Antoni Pizà Sep 1994

Spanish Music In The Twentieth Century [Book Review], Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

North-American audiences, musicians, and musicologists remain unfamiliar with twentieth-century Spanish music. Most concertgoers identify Spanish music with the folkloristic tunes associated with such composers as Isaac Albéniz, thus construing a true "other" facing the Germanic musical tradition. The musicological canon is not only almost closed to non-European musics, but also excludes the music of some countries that since the Industrial Revolution have been deemed "peripheral," forgetting, to be sure, that five and six hundred years ago the actual periphery was all lands north of Paris. Most of us were not surprised to hear in a special session on Hispanic music …

Hillbilly Music & Early Live Radio Programming In Bowling Green & Glasgow, Kentucky: Country Music As A Local Phenomenon, James Nelson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study, the author examines the development of country music in the area surrounding Bowling Green and Glasgow, Kentucky, from approximately 1930 to 1960 and its relation to the newly emerging medium of radio. Emphasis is placed on several performers whose careers were linked to the radio stations which began to broadcast in Bowling Green and Glasgow during the 1940s.

In the past, country music scholarship has tended to focus on phonograph records as a source of material for study and as the primary means of musical transmission. As a result, the careers of many of the lesser known …

Country Music In The Northeast: Two Careers, Joseph Ruff Aug 1993

Country Music In The Northeast: Two Careers, Joseph Ruff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although country music and its antecedents have received attention primarily as cultural phenomena of the South, the past twenty years have witnessed a growing scholarly interest in the interplay between commercial country music, vernacular components. and performers within a regional context. The commercial product which has now attained worldwide appeal undoubtedly sustains a significant relationship to the folkways and regional identity of the South; nonetheless, performers and vernacular styles from other areas of the country have contributed to the development of country music. Most important. many areas outside of the South maintain local traditions of country music entertainment. In this …

Schubert's Sexuality: A Prescription For Analysis?, Kofi Agawu Jul 1993

Schubert's Sexuality: A Prescription For Analysis?, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

What can Schubert's sexuality have to do with the analysis of his music? Four years ago, Maynard Solomon told a compelling story about a leading Austro-Germanic composer, one whose works are unlikely to be excluded from the narrowest definitions of the canon of European music since 1700: he was probably homosexual. Since then, Solomon's tentative argument has hardened into "fact" in the popular musicological imagination, not because additional evidence has become available, but because, in a field starved of headlines and scandal, such a revelation promised a much needed change of critical perspective.

Philosophy And The Analysis Of Music: Bridges To Musical Sound, Form, And Reference [Book Review], Antoni Pizà Mar 1993

Philosophy And The Analysis Of Music: Bridges To Musical Sound, Form, And Reference [Book Review], Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

In recent years there seems to have been a tendency (in theory at least) to view conventional academic disciplines with a certain hostility as intellectual chastisements that, rather than opening our minds to knowledge, merely hinder us. In the humanities especially, interdisciplinary studies have become a trend. Many scholars are tempted to abandon the cozy security of their methodology and embark on other, more adventurous hybrid enterprises. Philosophy and the Analysis of Music, one such enterprise, draws its premises from two apparently different fields, philosophy and musical analysis, in order to arrive at a better understanding of music.
