Antagonism And Relational Aesthetics, Claire Bishop Jan 2004

Antagonism And Relational Aesthetics, Claire Bishop

Publications and Research

A critique of relational aesthetics, as theorized by Nicolas Bourriaud, and exemplified in the work of Rirkrit Tiravanija and Liam Gillick. Using Laclau and Mouffe's theory of democracy as antagonism, the paper proposes instead a 'relational antagonism' found in certain projects by Santiago Sierra and Thomas Hirschhorn.

Water And Woodfiring, Richard Bresnahan Jun 2000

Water And Woodfiring, Richard Bresnahan

Asian Studies Faculty Publications

Part of a special section on the 1999 International Woodfire Conference. The technique of putting water into a high-temperature woodfired kiln is discussed. This 800-year-old technique is used to oxidize the environment, clear carbon, and quickly cool the pottery. It produces unique, beautiful textures and colors, particularly a rich earth-tone palette that cannot be paralleled by chemical glazes or other firing techniques. This technique was used in a Teppo-gama (gun kiln) based on designs from 12th-century Korean tunnel kilns, built on the island of Tanegashima, Japan, in 1969. The writer discusses the work of a number of artists who use …

Cultural Atrocity Expressed In Cultural Art, Marlie Mcgovern Jan 2000

Cultural Atrocity Expressed In Cultural Art, Marlie Mcgovern

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Some of the most horrific chapters in human history have involved an ethnic dimension, notably the centuries-long obliteration of traditional Nigerian cultures by European colonizers, the attempted destruction of European Jews in the Holocaust, and the World War ll decision to assault the Japanese with atomic bombs. The consequences of the above atrocities are not contained within temporal or cultural barriers, but hold profound and pervasive ramifications within contemporary society in its entirety. More recent conflicts in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Balkans reemphasize the horror and suffering brought about by cultural collisions. One of the most potent reactions to …

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick Jan 2000

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

"Journeys" primarily investigates the interpretation of one form of expression to another; i.e., the visual interpretation of myth through an in terms of the contemporary individual's psychological voyage. The basis for this study comes from the writings of noted scholar Joseph Campbell and others who place myth in the position of the inward, not the outward journey in the quest for human discovery. As Bill Moyers so eloquently states in The Power of Myth. "myths are the stories of our search through the ages for truth, for meaning, for significance. We all need to tell our story and to understand …

Review Of 1900: Art At The Crossroads, Antoni Pizà Jan 2000

Review Of 1900: Art At The Crossroads, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

There is probably little doubt that the fissure between "high" and "low" culture is more conspicuous nowadays than it ever was. Clement Greenberg, that dashing arbiter of contemporary art, had already sensed it in 1939 when he wrote the seminal essay quoted above, as Adorno also perceived it decades before him. Their foreboding premonitions, however, could not hinder the relentless success of popular culture and the retreat of so-called high art into the safe harbors of the university campus, the museum, and the private sphere.

French Aesthetics: Contemporary Painting Theory, Gary Shapiro Jan 1998

French Aesthetics: Contemporary Painting Theory, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

One peculiar feature of the Anglo-American reception of French thought since about 1970 is the view that the variety of thinkers and tendencies involved reduces everything to language. One crucial place to test such a reading is with regard to a set of texts devoted to painting and the visual arts, for the latter would seem to be situated at or beyond the boundaries of language, a place that Julia Kristeva calls the semiotic. The alleged reductionism of the French is usually construed as the claim that language is a seamless whole in which all meanings are defined in terms …

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 2, Brett Stalbaum Jan 1997

Conjuring Post-Worthlessness: Contemporary Web Art And The Postmodern Context: Part 2, Brett Stalbaum

SWITCH

In this short essay, the author compares postmodern philosophical concepts from Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard to theories of Web-based Art. The author discusses modern strategies for design and new aesthetics that re-emerged on the web. The author acknowledges that Baudrillard and Foucault overemphasize art's value as measured by the interplay of technologies of the self and production systems. He also points out that it would be as flawed a strategy to dismiss the postmodern critiques of art, as doing so runs the risk of complete cynicism and dismissal of art’s value. The relationships between what the author describes as …

The Appropriation Of Nietzschean Thought By Donald Kuspit In The Critic Is Artist: The Intentionality Of Art And The Existential Activist Painter: The Example Of Leon Golub, Frederic S. Bayersdorfer Oct 1994

The Appropriation Of Nietzschean Thought By Donald Kuspit In The Critic Is Artist: The Intentionality Of Art And The Existential Activist Painter: The Example Of Leon Golub, Frederic S. Bayersdorfer

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The prolific scholar and art critic, Donald Kuspit has frequently cited the works of Friedrich Nietzsche as a means to elucidate his art critical theories. This paper is an investigation of these citations in two of his most important works, The Critic is Artist: The Intentionality of Art, published in 1984, and The Existential Activist Painter: The Example of Leon Golub, published in 1986. In each of these two works many citations revolve around two Nietzschean concepts, the will to power and ressentiment. This paper first explores the relevance of using the philosophical work of Nietzsche as a point of …

The Reemergence Of The Goddess Image In Contemporary Art, Tara E. Patrick Dec 1993

The Reemergence Of The Goddess Image In Contemporary Art, Tara E. Patrick

The goddess image in art reflects a change in the spirituality of contemporary times.

Gadamer, Habermas And The Death Of Art, Gary Shapiro Jan 1986

Gadamer, Habermas And The Death Of Art, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Since the appearance of Jurgen Habermas's critical review of Hans-Georg Gadamer's Truth and Method [Wahrheit und Methode], there has been talk of the ‘Gadamer-Habermas debate' among those who are interested in the nature of historical understanding and social rationality. More recently a number of philosophers have come to see that the issues involved are of wider scope, and that the opposition of the two can be seen as emblematic of two very general styles or approaches to philosophy, which are at the centre of contemporary discussion. As one might expect, differences at fundamental levels concerning truth and understanding …

David Hockney, Brian Bartlett Jan 1977

David Hockney, Brian Bartlett

Masters Theses

David Hockney is generally recognised as the most talented British artist of his generation. In my thesis I trace his development from his childhood until the present as a figure lionised by the establishment. Hockney has become highly respected, a Van Dyck of contemporary polite society.

I show his place in a line of tradition in English painting, a tradition where painters stress the anecdotal above a purely visual language England has a commanding tradition of literature from figures such as Shakespeare, Bacon, Byron, Tennyson, Keats and Dickens, to name only a few. Due to this English society insisted on …

Eight Teacher-Potters, Bob Daugherty Jan 1974

Eight Teacher-Potters, Bob Daugherty

Masters Theses

This paper presents a survey of statements and the works of eight teacher-potters in Illinois. The works range from simple functional ware to funk art objects. The firing temperatures range from low fire white ware to high fire salt. The styles of the work are many; the philosophies of the work varied; and techniques of the work are diversified; but common to each work is its creation from idea to actuality by the teacher-potter. Beyond depicting the work, the paper attempts to establish the teacher-potter who created the work by showing photographs of him and by presenting his ideas and …

The Visual Arts Section Of The Pan American Union, Nancy Kay Mcdaniel Jan 1955

The Visual Arts Section Of The Pan American Union, Nancy Kay Mcdaniel

Student Scholarship

This paper provides a detailed examination of the Visual Arts Section of the Pan American Union and its role within the broader Organization of American States. The study begins by contextualizing the section within the history of inter-American cooperation, tracing the evolution of the OAS from Simon Bolivar’s 1826 Congress of Panama to the formal signing of the OAS Charter in 1948. The author explains that the Pan American Union serves as the permanent central organ and General Secretariat for the OAS, housing various departments including the Department of Cultural Affairs.

The core of the research focuses on the Visual …
