Linear B sign *49 (and it's Linear A antecedent), evidently of unknown origin, may be interpreted as influenced by the ancient Egyptian veneration of the sun god, specifically the drawings of the sun sending forth its rays. The Egyptian drawings include the sun itself (a circle with a dot inside), whereas the Linear A and B sign presents a wavy line in its place. I suggest the wavy line derives from part of the Egyptian hieroglyph for ‘horizon,’ whose full picture represents the sun emerging over a mountain. Like several other Linear B signs, Linear B 30 and its Linear A antecedent may reflect ancient Egyptian religious mythology -- in this case the sycamore fig tree, which was associated with the goddesses Isis and Hathor and which provided nourishment to people in the afterlife. This article suggests a rationale for the shape of Linear B sign 16 being that of a human head: The sign likely derives from the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for ‘face’ (recognized already by Sundwall and Evans) and very possibly honors the ancient Egyptian god Ptah, described as ‘Beautiful of Face.’ Also, remarkably, a total of three Linear B signs may be traceable directly to Ptah, and a fourth one (shared with Osiris) may be connected with him too.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a group of about 2.5 million Russia Germans immigrated to Germany, benefiting from the German law that recognizes citizenship to ethnic Germans who arrived in the territory as late ethnic Germans resettlers. Including their children, this subset of Germany’s population now numbers about 3.5 million, and about 350.000 Russia Germans have a Mennonite background. Of the 500.000 Plautdietsch-speaking people worldwide, about 200,000 of them live in Germany. In her debut novel, Nachtbeeren, the author Elina Penner illuminates the everyday life of German Mennonites from the Soviet Union and the successor …

There is relatively little linguistic research on the language spoken by the Swiss Amish community of Adams County, IN. The language is remarkable for various reasons. First, it is a kind of a mixed language with closely related parental languages which has so far not been found elsewhere in the languages of the world. Second, it is an example of a complex linguistic inner-Amish separation. This article studies the role of ‘selving’ and creative interpretation in literary translation. Specifically, it analyzes one of Basil Bunting’s successful translations of Obayd Zākānī’s Mush-o Gorbeh, a picturesque and catchy poem in rhyme and rhythm, laden with animal characters, which was considered to be both a masterpiece of children’s literature and a very important political satire. Bunting, a translator of Persian classical poems into English, had both political and poetic missions as a spy and an up-and-coming poet. This study turns to the theories of translation by Steiner, Benjamin, and Bassnett, among others, to show the challenges of translating …

Most Linear B signs are presently regarded as being of unknown origin, with a general consensus that Egyptian hieroglyphs are at best of minimal help in solving the mysteries. But the present article revisits this subject and suggests that the Egyptian hieroglyphic component goes beyond a borrowing or two. Along the way I noticed that for some Linear B signs a familiarity with Egyptian religious mythology is essential in this effort.

For example, the mysterious Linear B sign 75 is pronounced /we/ and looks like a backwards letter S. I suggest it can be explained as the cobra goddess Wadjet …

This chapter concerns the Great Lakes Indigenous peoples whose artifacts may be found in the Vienna Weltmuseum. It situates these artifacts within the larger framework of exchange modalities among Indigenous peoples, together with the Leopoldine Society, an organization founded in Vienna in 1829 to minister to German-speaking Catholics in North America. To convey this framework, the chapter recalls Indigenous artifact collections of British officers active in the region, as well as the gift giving of Odawa leader Jean-Baptiste Assiginack. This thesis considers the life and work of Christa Wolf in order to examine her role in East Germany as a “loyal dissident.” Wolf was born in the German Third Reich in 1929, and the German Democratic Republic was founded in 1949 just as she entered adulthood. Also in 1949, Wolf joined the East German socialist party and dedicated herself to the socialist project. Through an exploration of the publication, contents, and translations of four of her major works (Moscow Novella, Divided Heaven, The Quest for Christa T., and Patterns of Childhood), I examine how …

Within the field of second language acquisition, research finds that increased exposure to input results in improved proficiency, especially when those activities are challenging yet manageable for the language learner’s current level. Because of this, listening exercises and speech processing are considered integral to language acquisition, even leading to recommendations of frequent, authentic use of the target language (TL). Instructors’ TL authenticity is, however, sometimes stunted by the demand for comprehensible input and facilitation of classroom activities; they make use of simpler syntax, stronger enunciation, and more cognates (words sharing origins, meanings, and form across languages) than in casual speech. …

These peoples had their own culture whose cosmology was destroyed and erased over time by a violent process of colonization. Building upon comparative principles, this semantic reading of Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s essay In Praise of Shadows and J.M.G. Le Clézio’s early writings illustrates how both the Franco-Mauritian author and the Japanese writer problematize modern Western perception laden with concepts stifling flexible imagination through the mysterious worldview of light/darkness. They also simultaneously express the hope that another way of life leading to liberation is possible. Delving into the spiritual confinement of the subject, they demonstrate how keeping rich creativity within one’s heart can be an escape from a stagnant society. This study is a sociohistorical analysis of East German writer Christa Wolf’s use of fairy tale tropes in her novel Patterns of Childhood, first published in German in 1976 in East Germany as Kindheitsmuster. Wolf uses fairy tale tropes to explore themes that she could not write about openly under East German censorship, which prohibited East German authors from exposing their culpability for prior acts committed under the Nazi Regime. Furthermore, Wolf introduces metamorphosis to explore the intrinsic evil and subsequent guilt of her child protagonist, and she uses the child’s capacity for evil to illustrate the German people’s similar …

The short film series Wings (2016) by the Korean musical group BTS (Beyond the Scene) revisits John Milton’s Paradise Lost. BTS reinterprets Adam and Eve’s leaving of Eden as youths’ self-discovery process, overcoming a binary mindset. BTS emphasizes how experiences—trials, pains, and the struggle of youths to walk out of black-and-white perspectives—turn out to be “all so beautiful” as resources to grow. Wings demonstrates how the themes and elements in Paradise Lost can be used as a tool not only to explore Biblical concepts, but also to understand what pedagogical environments youths need to fully express themselves as writers. …
