Stereotypes and prejudice are forms of judgement that appear in daily life, including toward children. Children are often targeted to judgments based on stereotypes and prejudice in social interactions. One media that addresses this issue is the children’s series Moooment! Episode Shopping (2021), which depicts the experience of a child character facing suspicion and judgement from people in public spaces. This study examines the child’s perspective through the position of the child character as both object and subject of stereotypes and prejudice, as well as the negotiation strategies employed in response. This study examines the forms and meanings of onomatopoeia derived from concrete sounds in the digital comic The Wormworld Saga. The study aims to explore the use of onomatopoeia in The Wormworld Saga and to describe its forms and meanings using a descriptive qualitative method. This study analyzes the forms of onomatopoeia based on the categories proposed by Gross (1988) and analyzes their meanings based on the classification proposed by Körtvélyessy and Štekauer (2024). The results show that there are 54 onomatopoeia classified as concrete sounds. In terms of form, the most common onomatopoeia are non-word forms, accounting for 41 …

All over the world, mountain ranges inspire rich folklore, each set of tales unique to its respective culture. The purpose of this Honors Project is to answer the question: how does mountain-inspired folklore mirror cultural values and fears? A comparative analysis between Austrian Alpine and American Appalachian folktales is conducted in order to isolate the variables that cause folklore to differ region-to-region. It is widely assumed that Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels regarded world literature as an epiphenomenal product of the capitalist world market, and therefore as a symptom of rather than potential cure to the crisis of modern society. However, this conflicts with the fact that they designated the Communist Manifesto itself as a world-literary production—the joint work of communists of various nationalities—and opposed it to the national limitations of German socialist literature. This article challenges existing interpretations by outlining how Marx and Engels incorporated the humanistic idealism of the Goethean Weltliteratur tradition into the theoretical framework of historical materialism. This paper offers a reading of Sigmund Freud’s German translation of Marie Bonaparte’s book, Topsy: The Golden-Haired Chow, in which the author attempts to both delay the death of her dog and mourn it in advance through what I call foremourning. I argue that the manifest subject matter of Topsy should not be interpreted away as a projection of merely human concerns, but rather that close attention to Freud’s translation introduces themes from his analytic experience which engender an appreciation of Topsy’s atopia (intractability). This dissertation compares the poetic, critical, and epistolary oeuvres of Paul Valéry and Wallace Stevens and the influence of the former on the latter. Valéry famously advocated for the pursuit of “poésie pure” (“pure poetry”) and influenced Stevens especially in this way, though both of them concluded it was not achievable. I establish an approximation of a critical framework based on the work of the following critics and scholars: Wendy Lesser, Wendy Steiner, Anthony Cuda, Michael Clune, Paul Bové, and Liesl Olson. Heralded by some as one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20th century, French metaphysician René Guénon (1886-1951) is also the controversial father of Primordial Tradition, a metaphysics designed to remedy the decline of Western civilization. Guénon viewed the West in the grip of a prolonged cycle of degeneration. He sought to implement a pseudo-authoritarian spiritual reset that required a total rejection of its Western intellectual heritage and an embrace of Eastern doctrines.

Abstract This study explores language learners' stereotypical descriptions of native speakers (NSs) of German and their relationship with participants' perceptions of teachers of German. It expands motivation research that employs stereotypes to gain insight into university students' views of target language (TL) speakers (Rothe, 2022, 2025). Sixty‐seven learners of German and 43 learners of other world languages (WLs) pro vided responses about NSs and instructors, while also rating the stereotypes' perceived accuracy. Participants held various stereotypical notions about NSs, reflecting broader societal narratives. Learners of German pro vided more detailed stereotypical descriptions. Compared to other products of German Romanticism, scholarship has almost entirely overlooked the magazine Wünschelruthe (1818). No in-depth, original research has been made on the magazine since 1929. Investigations into the Wünschelruthe have only been within the frame of its connection to more influential works and authors within the German canon or as digression in biographies on its main contributors, and these writings usually neglect the actual content in the magazine. My senior thesis argues that disease is a formal element in Thomas Mann’s novel, The Magic Mountain, through the lens of a newly theorized genre: the “Bindungsroman” (“binding-novel”). The scholar Jonas Rosenbrück proposed the Bindungsroman as the successor genre to the Bildungsroman after the latter fell out of public favor after World War I.  Whereas the Bildungsroman narrates its hero’s maturation as a process of integration into society, the Bindungsroman’s hero is ontologically unstable and does not achieve normative resolution. How do readers learn to engage with novel forms of written language that fall outside of their established linguistic repertoire? And how do texts themselves facilitate this process? This thesis looks for answers to these questions in literary theory, multilingualism studies, applied linguistics, and a diverse corpus of literary works. I propose a comprehensive descriptive vocabulary of novel language use in literature, and then observe how these frameworks work in concert in an exemplary text by analyzing Christine Brooke-Rose’s multilingual novel Between. In the nineteenth century alone, approximately five million German-speaking immigrants arrived in America. However, the motivations of these individuals for moving to America, far from identical, were nearly as numerous as the individuals themselves. The German ethnic identity in America was not uniform, but the expression of many factors having to do with both the Vaterland and the new land. “Das Muttermal / The Birthmark / דער מוטער־צײכן” is a trilingual work of transcreative poetry that stages translation as a method of mourning, cultural memory, and feminist inheritance. Composed first in German and then translated into English and Yiddish, the poem explores the catastrophic rupture of maternal loss and the slow transformation of trauma into understanding. The central metaphor of the birthmark—Muttermal, the “mother-mark”—figures the maternal body as both wound and connective tissue, binding ancestors and descendants through a physical trace that persists across generations, geographies, and languages. Igoni Barrett’s Blackass (2015) has frequently been described as a “race-rewrite” of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis (1915). This framing has shaped much of the critical conversation surrounding the two texts. While these approaches productively illuminate questions of identity and biopolitics, less attention has been paid to situating both texts across the intersecting contexts of German modernism and Nigerian postcolonial literature. Tolkien famously wrote several poems in Old English and Gothic; however, these remain understudied for their philological and poetic qualities relative to his modern English poetic corpus. In the Old English Poem of Attila Tolkien adapts the Old Norse poem Atlakviða into Old English. This essay analyzes the meter and poetic techniques in Old English Poem of Attila, especially in relation to the closely related, Eddic poem Atlakviða. Women At Work: Women In Economic Crises In German Film, Anthony J. Capone

The films Joyless Street (1925), The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979), and The Drifter (2010) depict the influence of economic crises in restricting women’s flexibility and the shaping of their social roles. Through the themes of survival, resistance, and agency, the female protagonists navigate the economic hardships such as scarcity, poverty, and unemployment by using labor, sexuality, and personal relationships. Spanning the eras of post-World War 1, the Wirtschaftswunder, and the late 2000s, these women emerge as individuals, who are not weak, but rather constrained by the economic structures of their society.

A Palatable Identity: Turkish-German Integration Through Cuisine, Film And Hip-Hop, Thomas Goldsborough

This paper explores how Turkish-German identity is constructed and negotiated through cultural production in contemporary Germany. It argues that belonging is shaped less by formal political inclusion than by processes of visibility, commodification, and marketability. Through case studies of döner kebab culture, Turkish-German cinema, and hip-hop, the paper shows how minority identity is made legible to the mainstream by being aestheticized and adapted to familiar forms. While these processes enable recognition and creative expression, they also reveal how acceptance is often contingent on profitability and cultural “palatability” rather than genuine social integration.

For Germany, the process of reckoning with the past is not a new one. Termed Vergangenheitsbewältigung in the post-war period and envisioned as a project extending beyond the academy into public consciousness, “dealing with the past” was first envisioned in response to the Nazi regime and its horrors. While already a disjointed project in the Nazi context, the question of how reunified Germany reckons with the former German Democratic Republic’s past remains unresolved.

In this lesson, students deepen their proficiency in the target language by designing and implementing a foreign-language edition of the game Codenames. Drawing on their understanding of vocabulary, semantics, and cultural nuance, students adapt game components and rules to account for language-specific challenges such as word ambiguity, cognates, homophones, and idiomatic meaning. Through collaborative gameplay, students actively apply linguistic knowledge in a communicative, problem-solving context that emphasizes precision and strategic language use. The lesson promotes critical thinking, intercultural competence, and authentic language practice while reinforcing vocabulary acquisition and comprehension in an engaging, student-centered format.

This article suggests that the two parallel wavy lines in Linear B sign 76 depict the river traveled nightly by the Egyptian sun god Ra. Also:

1. The Egyptian influence was likely exerted already on the Linear A and Cretan hieroglyphic antecedents of Linear B sign 76.

2. Variants of Linear B sign 76 contain a horizontal line across the two wavy vertical lines. The present article suggests the horizontal line might indicate one of the river’s twelve gates that Ra had to navigate through in his nightly journey.

This article suggests that Linear B sign 21 (of unknown origin)

may derive ultimately from the Ancient Egyptian ‘wedjat eye’

(Eye of Horus). A point of special interest here is the possibility

that the pronunciation of Linear B sign 21 (designated as ‘qi’)

derives in abbreviated form from the Proto-Indo-European dual

of ‘eye’ and would therefore be the oldest Greek attestation of

that reconstructed PIE form.

Reflections On Linear B, (Part 15): Sign 81 In Linear A And The Egyptian Four-Headed Ram God, Gerald Leonard Cohen

This article makes several tentative suggestions, including:

1. Linear A sign 81 (antecedent of Linear B81) may be an abbreviated image (two heads) of the four-headed Egyptian ram god Banebdjedet, with the horizontal line designating his horns shifted downward to the middle of the character.

2. A few other Linear A characters (e.g., sign 305) may represent slight alterations of sign A81.

3. Linear A82 includes two sets of three short horizontal lines. Those might signify brightness, and in the case of Banebdjedet the brightness would be his wisdom.
