A Labor Of Love: Wall-E'S Redemption, Rosamund M. Gammie
A Labor Of Love: Wall-E'S Redemption, Rosamund M. Gammie
Journal of Religion & Film
Inaugurated into the Criterion Collection in 2022 this paper re-examines some of the initial responses to the 2008 Disney-Pixar animated film, WALL-E. The movie received a mixed reception, largely celebrated (but occasionally viewed as “too leftist” by others) for its environmental, anti-capitalist message by many public critics, yet disparaged or dismissed as being superficially empty, shallow, and hollow in academic circles. Labor has been the focus of some academic criticism of the film, particularly as it relates to commoditisation, but this paper recontextualises labor not with capitalism, but with love. By viewing the film through the dynamic of labor and …
A Hidden Life On The Way Of The Cross: Terrence Malick And The Cultivation Of Character, William S. Skiles
A Hidden Life On The Way Of The Cross: Terrence Malick And The Cultivation Of Character, William S. Skiles
Journal of Religion & Film
Terrence Malick’s film A Hidden Life depicts the resistance of the Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter against the Nazi regime and its demands that he serve Nazi war aims and swear an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler. Unlike other resistance films set in Nazi Germany or the Greater German Reich, which depict resistors conspiring to overthrow the regime or actively working toward its downfall, A Hidden Life presents a man’s simple and emphatic “No” to the Nazi regime and its ideology. The film does not simply show how Jägerstätter said “No,” but reveals how he was able to say “No” …

The Pandemic Skip And The Power Of Nostalgia: Why Gen Z Is Drawn To Animated Kids Shows, Haley Bergen
The Pandemic Skip And The Power Of Nostalgia: Why Gen Z Is Drawn To Animated Kids Shows, Haley Bergen
English Student Publications
The early 2010s produced animated kids shows such as Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and The Legend of Korra, which drew Generation Z because of elements like family, friendship, and self-introspection. This connection is strengthened by the Pandemic Skip Phenomenon: a time where young adult’s mental growth was stunted during COVID-19, leading to this generation looking for comfort in these nostalgic animated series’ to assist the transition into adulthood.

Mithila Art has helped illuminate various aspects of the relationship between gendered Maithil social roles and Maithil women’s narratives in connection with a feminist participatory action research project conducted primarily in 2016-2017 in and around the northern Bihari town of Madhubani. While participatory action research philosophically and methodologically attends to process as much as product, Mithila Art played a role in the process and product of making a documentary film and in our capacity to understand and communicate with varied audiences about shifting Maithil gender norms. The research and filmic project provided insight into the complex relationship among the stories …

Sports For Gender Equality, Michelle Salmeron, Julia Mott, Eliza Cash
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Recent studies show that participating in sports leads to lower levels of anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity in children while also fostering higher self-esteem (Tahira, 2023). In Mexico, 67% of girls are inactive (Provoking Sport, 2023). However, there has been little direct research conducted in Mexico to illustrate and exemplify the benefits of sports for girls and women. Additionally, there are few role models for them to look up to who share their cultural background, as most examples come from other countries. This creates a cycle that hinders cultural and societal growth, as well as creates a barrier to sports participation. …

NPS-1 is a biopic/political thriller feature-length screenplay that follows the true story of Stephen Mather, a public relations whiz and self-made millionaire who dedicated his fortune to lobbying for the creation of the National Park Service, eventually becoming its first director. Navigating political obstacles on the path to establishing the NPS, Mather struggles to conceal his history with manic depression as his erratic behavior becomes an increasing threat to the success of his campaign. Alongside his reliable but in-the-dark assistant Horace Albright, Mather navigates the ethical minefield that comes with park policymaking: can a push for road development, or border …
Teaching Video Composition And Digital Rhetoric In The Youtube Era: Analysis And Research Of Academic Video Essays In The College Composition Classroom, Carmen Ollila
All NMU Master's Theses
As video-based communication has gained popularity across sites like YouTube, it is essential to represent this type of rhetorical communication within the college composition classroom. Using video and filmmaking to communicate information in the classroom is not new, as academics have explored such media as aids to writing since the 1970s, following the popularity of news broadcasting in the 1950s. In the 21st Century, teaching students video composition and digital rhetoric in an era where a platform such as YouTube has made it easier to share information to a large audience. The freshman college composition classroom should provide the tools …
Stop Looking Away: On The Zone Of Interest And Palestine, Trevor J. Matteson
Stop Looking Away: On The Zone Of Interest And Palestine, Trevor J. Matteson
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest is a radical interrogation of complicity, silence, and the carefully curated distance that enables atrocity to unfold in full view. Through a cinematic language defined by absence - of violence, of sentimentality, of conventional storytelling - Glazer collapses the walls between the viewer and the horror we are trained to ignore. The film’s haunting sound design, unflinching cinematography, and alienating formal strategies construct a domestic world nestled against a genocide, daring us to recognize our own proximity to suffering. By situating the Hoss family’s banal cruelty alongside the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the essay …
A Score For The Outdoors: A Study Of Hayao Miyazaki's Environmentalism And Joe Hisaishi's Score In Princess Mononoke, Jasper E. Vasilevskis
A Score For The Outdoors: A Study Of Hayao Miyazaki's Environmentalism And Joe Hisaishi's Score In Princess Mononoke, Jasper E. Vasilevskis
Senior Theses
This honors thesis explores the role of composer Joe Hisaishi’s score in relation to director Hayao Miyazaki’s environmental perspective in Princess Mononoke (1997). Miyazaki’s belief that, regardless of the target audience, a story cannot be told without presenting “the ecological issues”[1] leads to the production of films that have rhetoric in support of environmental appreciation and conservation embedded throughout. When read through an environmentalist lens, Princess Mononoke becomes a critique of “human-centric” thinking, instead supporting an ideology similar to “deep ecology,” which considers humans to be intrinsically linked to nature. Despite Hisaishi and Miyazaki’s close collaboration that leads to …

Tartans: Weaving A Warped History With Myths, Heritage And A Whole Lot Of Heather., Bethany Sassen
LSU Master's Theses
Scotland has many tartans throughout the whole of the country. Each has a different meaning and is used for different clans and purposes. Tartans are the plaids that are seen throughout the Highlands and the patterns and colors have a wide range depending on where and when the tartan was created. The purpose of this research is to investigate the history of the tartans and how they interact with our current culture. I also built two outfits to show how tartan is still being used. One a more traditional outfit and the other more avant garde. Tartans have a long …

In 2023, Aga Khan University’s Graduate School of Media and Communications (AKU-GSMC) undertook a study examining the representation of women in East African news media organisations with a focus on the coverage and portrayal of women in prominent newspapers, television, and digital news platforms across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The study specifically sought to assess gender representation within the media workforce, the distribution of leadership roles and responsibilities in media companies, and the way women are covered and portrayed in the media. Using content analysis, the study reveals that women are frequently underreported in news stories and disproportionately portrayed in …
The Roles Of Literature And Film In Shaping Culture: An Examination Of All Quiet On The Western Front And The German Lesson, Charles Hansen
The Roles Of Literature And Film In Shaping Culture: An Examination Of All Quiet On The Western Front And The German Lesson, Charles Hansen
Senior Theses
This paper examines the cultural impacts of All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues) and The German Lesson (Deutschstunde). More specifically, it examines the impacts of the works through the shaping of German identity and public memory following World War I and World War II, as well as any long-term impacts that have lasted into the present day. These two works of literature, as well as their respective film adaptations, can serve as vehicles for national reflection, education, and confrontation of the past. This paper will examine the key themes of All Quiet …

“Plenty Of Heart And Plenty Of Hope”: An Analysis Of Social And Historical Implications In Post-Wwii Western Musical Films, Katelyn N. Lister
Selected Honors Theses
World War II had a profound and significant impact on American life and culture. Hollywood and film production was one area that was notably different after the war with themes and settings that promoted patriotism and American values being seen more frequently. Film lends itself to analysis due to its recorded and preserved nature that allows audiences today to view the same thing that audiences in the early 1950s were seeing, albeit with a different worldview. Western movies made in the late 1940s and early 1950s perfectly encapsulate the feelings of most Americans during the postwar period. Additionally, a new …
Trespassers Of Space: Rewriting Female Narratives In Mexican Cinema, Andrea Ruvalcaba
Trespassers Of Space: Rewriting Female Narratives In Mexican Cinema, Andrea Ruvalcaba
Undergraduate Theses in Art History
How have Mexican cultural figures such as Maria Novaro and Adela Sequeyo made space for themselves in the male-dominated film realm? How and why have these women dared to become “contrabandistas,” or trespassers, in a social fabric defined and governed by men? The same questions apply to the world of Mexican cinema — more specifically Mexican Feminist cinema. Throughout these pages, I will explore how the film Los Pasos de Ana (1991), by the Mexican filmmaker Marysa Sistach, integrates women’s perspectives into Mexican film culture to counteract the neutralization of powerful female representations played out across various facets of Mexican …

The Tragic Outlaw Hero In Modern Egyptian Fiction: A Case Study On Naguib Mahfouz’S "The Thief And The Dogs", Manar Ellethy
The Tragic Outlaw Hero In Modern Egyptian Fiction: A Case Study On Naguib Mahfouz’S "The Thief And The Dogs", Manar Ellethy
Regards
This article examines the outlaw figure in modern Egyptian fiction
through the lens of the conceptual framework of social banditry and classical
tragedy. It offers a unique angle of analysis of one of Mahfouz’s most prolific
works that emerges in times of growing political anxiety following the Egyptian
Revolution of 1952. Reading the 1962 film adaptation of Naguib Mahfouz’s The
Thief and the Dogs directed by Kamal El-Sheikh as a projection of the socio-
political uncertainty of the post-revolution Nasser era, this paper considers the
outlaw figure within the condition of social alienation. Using the conceptual
borders set by Eric …
A Polyphonic Adaptation: Noir Sensibilities In Naguib Mahfouz And Salah Abu Seif’S Take On Émile Zola’S "Thérèse Raquin", Fadi Awad Elsaid
A Polyphonic Adaptation: Noir Sensibilities In Naguib Mahfouz And Salah Abu Seif’S Take On Émile Zola’S "Thérèse Raquin", Fadi Awad Elsaid
Regards
In 1951, Salah Abu-Seif directed Lak Yūm yā ẓālim (Your Day Is Coming) – scripted by Naguib Mahfouz – adapting Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1867). In their third collaboration, Abu-Seif and Mahfouz went beyond merely adapting Zola’s novel – they also incorporated traits and techniques from film noir, creating what this article terms a “polyphonic adaptation” that draws from multiple sources. While their partnership is often credited with pioneering realism in Egyptian cinema, this article argues that the film’s crime-thriller elements invite a reassessment of that narrative. Although adapting French novels was common in pre-1952 Egyptian cinema, their …

The 1953 Codes: Rayyā And Sakīna On Screen (1953-2005), Elena Chiti
Regards
This paper examines on-screen representations of female criminals. It focuses on Rayyā and Sakīna, two sisters who were arrested in Egypt in 1920 and executed in 1921. Since 1953, the sisters have inspired movies and TV series that have entrenched their myth in popular culture. Rayyā and Sakīna are at the core of narratives that bear moral imperatives on societal issues, such as the place of women in society and the relation of the nation to its margins. I will argue that, until a recent off-screen resignification, Rayyā and Sakīna have not been deeply resignified in Egyptian movies. Instead, they …

Awful, Yet Awe-Full: The Sublime Dystopia Of Blade Runner 2049, Charles E. Butt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Blockbuster dystopian sci-fi features stories of environmental collapse, authoritarian governments, out of control corporations, unbounded consumerism, and other awful possibilities. Scholars of science fiction broadly agree that this genre explores collective fears, anxieties, and speculations about the present and future. At the same time, film scholars have established that dystopian sci-fi cinema is compelling, and audiences respond to their effects-driven visuals, photorealistic mise-en-scene, and dramatic narratives. This creates an apparent paradox: Blockbuster cinematic aesthetics portray undesirable worlds desirably. I resolve this paradox by arguing that the worldbuilding of spectacle-driven, dystopian sci-fi cinema is Romanticized. That is, the provocative style of …
