Voices Of Color: The Presence Of Minority Broadcast Media Professionals, Kristi Runyon
Voices Of Color: The Presence Of Minority Broadcast Media Professionals, Kristi Runyon
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
'Workplace diversity" is becoming something of a catch phrase in the business world. As the United States population diversifies, so must the United States workforce, or so the theory goes. In the broadcasting industry, organizations have issued mandatory minority-hiring regulations. However, a large number of minorities argue that there is much room for improvement when it comes to newsroom diversity. Studies show not only that there is an insufficient number of minorities in front of the camera, but also that there are few minorities in the executive and management offices. Minorities do have a presence in the broadcasting industry, but …

Review by Anne Collins Smith on the H-PCAACA mailing list, June 1998.
The Metaphysics of Star Trek by Richard Hanley. New York: Basic Books, 1997. xviii + 253 pp. $18.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-465-09124-9.
Richard Hanley's The Metaphysics of Star Trek is an engaging examination of certain philosophical issues raised within the Star Trek universe. Its title, however, is overly broad; it would be more correctly titled, The Twentieth-Century Applied Metaphysics of Star Trek. The earliest reference in the bibliography is an article written in 1950; the next earliest, 1960. The vast majority of sources are from the 1980's and …

Everything But A Film: The Cinematic Adaptation Of An Original Work Of Literary Fiction, Peter C. Heide
Whittier Scholars Program
This project translates an original short story into a cinematic medium, short of actually making a complete film. This study provides commentary on the process of the project while including the original story, screenplay, storyboard and selected scenes. While the premise for the project was simple the actual execution was not.

A Content Analysis Of Televised Health News Coverage Within The Huntington, West Virginia Designated Market Area, Leigh Suzanne Hall
A Content Analysis Of Televised Health News Coverage Within The Huntington, West Virginia Designated Market Area, Leigh Suzanne Hall
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Local media should carefully consider whether or not their health information coverage provides current and useful information to people living within their viewing area. Media play an important role in providing Americans with pertinent health information. As Greenberg and Wartenber (1990) suggest, “American people receive two-thirds more cancer prevention information from television than from their physicians.” Therefore, local television media should make a conscious effort to educate themselves about which health diseases and problems most affect people within their viewing area. For example, people living in Appalachia experience health conditions that are not consistent with those experienced in every region …

Film Review: Cop Land, James Morrison
Film Review: Cop Land, James Morrison
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
On the strength of Heavy and his new film, Mangold appears to be striving to forge an authentically ascetic style within the decidedly inhospitable climate of contemporary Hollywood. His decision to follow the anomalously quiet Heavy with a police-procedural that appears at least superficially to be in the up-tothe- minute blockbuster mode feels a bit like an exercise, an experiment in spiritual temptation-andresistance, and the news here is that Mangold has not sold out, as so many young filmmakers do after a first independent hit.

Almodóvar On The Verge Of Cocteau's "La Voix Humaine", Linda M. Willem
Almodóvar On The Verge Of Cocteau's "La Voix Humaine", Linda M. Willem
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Jean Cocteau's one-act play, La Voix humaine [The Human Voice], consists entirely of a monologue by a woman engaged in a final phone conversation with her lover. Alone in her room, she desperately clings to the telephone as her only link to the man who has left her for someone else. Although this agonizing portrait of abandonment and despair bears little resemblance to Almodóvar's multi-charactered comedic romp through the streets of Madrid in Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios [Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown], Cocteau's play has been named as the …

Text And Intertext: James Whale's Frankenstein In Víctor Erice's El Espíritu De La Colmena, Linda M. Willem
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Víctor Erice's use of clips from James Whale's Frankenstein as the basis for actions by his young protagonist, Ana, in El espíritu de la colmena has led critics to speculate on the symbolic meaning of the monster within that Spanish film. For Virginia Higginbotham the monster represents Franco's Spain, a country that has lost both its memory and its moral sense (116-20). For Marvin D'Lugo the monster stands for the mysterious, the unknown, the different, and the deviant, all of which Ana identifies with as she defines herself as an oppositional spirit (2862). Carmen Arocena sees Ana's rebellion as an …

An Analysis Of The Films Of Francois Truffaut, Tara Dreier
An Analysis Of The Films Of Francois Truffaut, Tara Dreier
Whittier Scholars Program
This project, written in French, is an exploration of the relationship between the personal ideology of French film director François Truffaut and his films. In examining such things as camera movements, camera angles, music, staging, and dialogue, the Scholar discovered how Truffaut’s ideas of childhood were displayed in his films. The life and work of Truffaut serves as a great example of how a director’s worldview is inevitably reflected in their films.

Bright Lights, Small City: New Beginnings Of The Singapore Film Industry, Samantha W.M. Tan
Bright Lights, Small City: New Beginnings Of The Singapore Film Industry, Samantha W.M. Tan
Theses : Honours
The Singapore government decided in J9H5 that making movies and turning the country into a regional film centre was an ideal venture to help develop and sustain the country's economic growth. The nation has about 3.7 million people, and although English is studied as the first language, about half of the population (especially the older generation) are more well-versed in their mother tongue, ie. Chinese, Malay or Tamil. Because of this disparity, it would appear that the Singapore market doesn't have the critical mass to sustain a film industry unless the movies are made for export. Little has been written …
