In this study of autobiography by French-speaking writers, we propose to construct a syntax for the genre, after recalling the great difficulty of tackling such a vast subject for so long. From then on, any study of autobiography implies confronting it with other related forms, such as essays, memoirs, autofiction, testimonies or diaries, all characterised by the assumed subjectivity of the “I” narrator, who recounts a life journey as well as a personal reflection on world events. The general idea defended here is that the grammar of intellectual autobiography presents itself as a narrative posture that needs to be thought …

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi Jan 2024

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. The basic hypothesis is that this practice is to be understood from an important moment in his intellectual development, namely May 68 and what has been called “La pensée 68” within which two antagonistic tendencies oppose each …

An Analysis Of Themes In East German Films Between 1946 And 1974, Audrey Hopper Jan 2024

An Analysis Of Themes In East German Films Between 1946 And 1974, Audrey Hopper

2024 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

Historians have studied the history of the divided Germany. Many of these historians have studied the nuances that appear when comparing the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany. Historians have debated on which of the Cold War era Germanys created the best response to the Nazi past during World War II. Philosopher Sarah Neiman weighs in on the debate and takes her spin on the topic. Her book focuses on the concept that countries like the United States should learn from Germany, as the country has been reconciling its past on a national level, which is something …

The 4 Ps Of Marketing In Film: Examining The Relationship Between Power, Perspective, And Product Placement On Consumer Perception, Julia Haddad Jan 2024

The 4 Ps Of Marketing In Film: Examining The Relationship Between Power, Perspective, And Product Placement On Consumer Perception, Julia Haddad

Honors Projects in Marketing

In today's society, automobiles are the most used type of transportation and with that comes vast marketing opportunities for vehicles. However, with the growing popularity of media forms of television and film, marketing techniques such as the use of product placement have also become more common. This paper analyzes the effects of power through point of view in product placement, specifically through automotive advertising. By showing the population movie and television clips both from a driving, 1st-person perspective or an out of car, 3rd-person perspective, after a power priming question, it portrays the relationship between them. Additionally, the data collected …

Discours Des Autres Et Récit De Soi : L’Autofiction Intellectuelle Chez Ananda Devi, Nina Bouraoui Et Shumona Sinha, Florian Alix Jan 2024

Discours Des Autres Et Récit De Soi : L’Autofiction Intellectuelle Chez Ananda Devi, Nina Bouraoui Et Shumona Sinha, Florian Alix

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Some autofictional texts tend to refer to a socio-historical context through the exploration of a specific subjectivity. On the first hand, telling the self enables to show a singularity which puts in perspective a collective situation by revealing its intersectional complexity. On the other hand, appears the burden of collective normative discourses, which literary writing try to interrogate and distance through valorization of body and affects.

Unlike other authors in her literary field (P. Chamoiseau, R. Confiant, M. Condé, D. Maximin, etc.), Gisèle Pineau did not write an “intellectual or literary” autobiography strictly speaking ; we can nevertheless reconstruct it from the various interviews she has given or other writings in which she reflects on creative practice. The author draws her scriptural inspiration from empirical models, listening to the life stories (often involving violence) that West Indian women whisper to each other in the privacy of the kitchen. Discreetly disqualifying the scholarly literate library, it favors the female oral library, an illiterate memorial motherhood heritage which …

This article aims at analyzing the heuristic status of self-writing through the articulation of shattered and reconciled identity in La vie sans fards (2012) of Maryse Condé and Ma grand-mère bantoue et mes ancêtres les Gaulois (2003) by Henri Lopes. In fact, we argue that the articulation in question, here, appears as writing for oneself and for others, which is based on a hermeneutical perspective of the self and the sociality of texts proposed by Paul Ricoeur and Claude Duchet. The main objective of this investigation is to understand, in Condé and Lopes writings, the practice of intellectual autobiography as …

The Successful Façade: The Powers Of Postmodernism Within The Comedy, Abigail Muller Jan 2024

The Successful Façade: The Powers Of Postmodernism Within The Comedy, Abigail Muller

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

The comedy has always been an incredibly versatile genre: although it certainly contains rote story formulas meant to provide lighthearted entertainment, the comedy can also reveal interesting perspectives pertaining to darker underlying issues, allowing audiences to process these hypocrisies as from behind a screen of safety. Such is the case of the movies The King of Comedy (1982), Wag the Dog (1997), Bowfinger (1999), and Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), all of which can be classified as comedic escapades yet fail to conceal their corrupted underbellies from a prying viewer. The four films, despite occurring in wildly different worlds and containing …

An Overview And Analysis Of The Wire’S First Season, Jack Gullo Jan 2024

An Overview And Analysis Of The Wire’S First Season, Jack Gullo

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the Fall of 2023, I had the great pleasure of studying the first season of an HBO drama from the 2000s called The Wire. In this paper, I analyze how creator David Simons made relevant cultural commentary about American capitalism and its effects on the citizens of our cities, specifically Baltimore. Simon derives his knowledge of Baltimore from his years spent as a crime reporter at The Baltimore Sun, which had a profound influence on the realism displayed in the show. This first season of The Wire proves to be sophisticatedly complex, stepping away from traditional cop shows at …

That Girl Vs. New Girl: The Perils Of Choice Feminism, Katherine Noble Jan 2024

That Girl Vs. New Girl: The Perils Of Choice Feminism, Katherine Noble

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

In recent years, Elizabeth Meriwether’s television show New Girl has begun to reach the status of a cult classic. The show’s sharp humor and quirky protagonist have captured the hearts and minds of many. But is this all for the good? New Girl features a controversial protagonist, Jessica Day, whose personality grates on some and resonates with others. Jessica represents stereotypically feminine interests and ideals yet takes on a leading role and independence not always afforded to female characters. This opens her, and the larger show, up to feminist readings and critiques. Surprisingly, little scholarly research has been conducted on …

This work examines the Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles (PASLA), one of several cultural arts responses to the 1965 Watts Rebellion. Fundamentally, this work seeks to restore to memory and discourse the work of the Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles, its founder Motojicho Vantile Whitfield, and the PASLA Community Players. The Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles demonstrated a dynamic praxis in the South Central Los Angeles community, expressed through the organization’s motto, “social growth through the performing arts.” The Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles offered workshops in the literary, performance and technical aspects of drama and …

The Power Of Polish: Exploring The Impact Of Nail Adornments On Perceptions Of Attraction, Sara Demichele Jan 2024

The Power Of Polish: Exploring The Impact Of Nail Adornments On Perceptions Of Attraction, Sara Demichele

Honors Theses

Understanding the significance of nail adornments in shaping perceptions of attractiveness and mate value provides insights into human behavior and preferences. In the current investigation, participants rated human nail length and color on physical attractiveness and partner desirability measures. Results revealed significant effects of nail length and color across different demographic groups. Medium-length nails consistently received higher ratings for physical attractiveness, cuteness, and partner desirability compared to short and long nails. White-colored nails were generally rated most attractive, while blue and black nails received the lowest ratings. Additionally, participants reported a moderate association between having manicured nails and feelings of …

Maka: Distribuzione E Circolazione Di Un Film Indipendente, Simone Brioni Dr. Jan 2024

Maka: Distribuzione E Circolazione Di Un Film Indipendente, Simone Brioni Dr.

Department of English Faculty Publications

The distribution and circulation of independent films are fundamental but often neglected aspects in film studies. This article presents a distribution experience followed by the author of the text himself: the case of the independent documentary Maka. Produced thanks to an academic grant and the collaboration with two Italian production companies, Maka was screened at numerous international festivals and received several awards. Distribution involved both traditional cinema circuits and independent digital platforms. The film has been screened in academic and associative contexts, in Italy and the United States, encouraging debates on social and cultural issues. The participation of the protagonist, …

Queering The Troubled Tropics In Panx Solajes’ Post-Haiyan Short Films, Ian Harvey A. Claros Jan 2024

Queering The Troubled Tropics In Panx Solajes’ Post-Haiyan Short Films, Ian Harvey A. Claros

Filipino Faculty Publications

This article apprehends a precarious moment when the queer and the tropics coincide to form a new fabric of sensing in this age of climate crisis. Queer and tropics are intimate, not only because both embody their inherent openness and fluidity, but also because each is woven closely by the corollary contradictions that besiege them, such as heteronormativity, capitalism, and environmental degradation. Within such an intersecting framework, this study critically engages with a selection of three works by the queer Filipino filmmaker Panx Solajes who attentively observes the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (locally called Yolanda) in the Philippines, a tropical …

A Semester Abroad Discussion Of The Film, Tatianna M. Rice

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

What does a French and Digital Media Production double major do when they study abroad in Paris, France? Create a film, of course. A Semester Abroad follows my various travels during the Fall 2023 semester. In this discussion of my film, I break down the process from my initial research on French cinema, which focused on filmmakers during the French New Wave film movement of the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, to the process of creating this film. Inspired by the vignettes of Dreams directed by Akira Kurosawa, a film I first watched in my Global Cinema course, I created …

From Serial To Subreddit: An Analysis Of Modern True Crime And Web Sleuths, Alyssa T. Compton Jan 2024

From Serial To Subreddit: An Analysis Of Modern True Crime And Web Sleuths, Alyssa T. Compton

English Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation, I assert that the rise of the internet and social media has exacerbated the ethical concerns already present in true crime media. This dissertation argues that true crime web sleuths operate as an effective public, shaping the true crime archive and the genre itself. The aim of this project is to explore the lack of borders between the role of consumers, content creators, web sleuths, and media outlets. Via communication, affect, and archival theory I propose that modern true crime is dependent upon consumers ability to easily slip into the role of producer and vice versa. In …

Histories, Legacies, And Futures Of Image-Processing, Helena Shaskevich, Adam Hart Jan 2024

Histories, Legacies, And Futures Of Image-Processing, Helena Shaskevich, Adam Hart

Publications and Research

Conversations for this special section of Leonardo first began in July 2023. Over the course of the following year and half, as the framework was conceptualized, papers were solicited, reviewed, edited and re-edited, and editorial deadlines came and went, two pioneering figures in the field of video image-processing passed away: Louise (Etra) Ledeen and Ralph Hocking. While the trajectories of their engagement with the now-widely dispersed community of image-processing artists differed—Ledeen left the art world to focus on corporate projects in the late 1980s while Hocking continued to teach at Binghamton University and remained at the helm of the Experimental …

Identifying Youth Appeals In Alcohol Alternative Social Media Content Through Framing, Melina Oneal Jan 2024

Identifying Youth Appeals In Alcohol Alternative Social Media Content Through Framing, Melina Oneal

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Proposed regulations for alcohol advertising prevent beverage companies from targeting people under the legal drinking age. However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. Alcohol alternatives beverages, including no-alcohol and low-alcohol products, are increasing in popularity and can function as compliments to alcoholic products to decrease the total alcohol volume consumed or as substitutes for alcoholic products. Framing theory can be operationalized through the Content Appealing to Youth Index, an index of content elements found in research literature to be appealing to youth, to …

Autopathography Across Media: Trauma And Fluid Embodied Subjectivity, He (Kristen) Shen Jan 2024

Autopathography Across Media: Trauma And Fluid Embodied Subjectivity, He (Kristen) Shen

Honors Theses

Illness memoirs with first-person point of view have gained more attention in recent years among medical sociologists and anthropologists. Different from traditional “case histories”written by doctors that are in danger of ignoring patients’ voices, autopathograhical works delineate narrators’ transformative experiences of persons to patients, emphasizing the importance of gaining social understanding of illness. Focusing on three works within the category of autopathography across genres and media forms in the late 1950s and contemporary periods, The Cancer Journals (1980) written by Audre Lorde, The Collected Schizophrenias (2019) written by Esmé Weijun Wang, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) directed …
