Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

Two poems by Adam Wolfond, "How" and "Babble About Autism Talks Too Much" (2020) "language" autism differently, questioning the way neurotypicality asserts authority over the meaning and experiences of autistic people. Wolfond is a non-speaking writer who is the first and youngest poet to be published by poets.org. He is a public text-to-speech presenter, collaborator on academic projects, an artist who has previously exhibited in Toronto, Canada and has published two books of poetry with Unrestricted Interest. His interest lies in movement, relation, affect and language.

This thesis looks into the culture of reading, translating, and publishing classical Chinese poetry in the English literary world between the 1890s and the 1920s. It explores the mediating and constructive roles of translation (broadly construed) in the formation of knowledge about Chinese literature by focusing on an unconventional segment of the field – poet-translators who integrate Chinese poetry with the pursuit of literary modernism, whose avid experimentalism and lack of sinological credentials run counter to the fidelity principle of translation. I try to foreground the dynamism of this literary contact zone by correlating three dimensions of networks: the transtextual …

This collection of poetry and flash non-fiction is a full-length hybrid collection that focuses on themes of grief, inheritance, memory, and sexuality. Genetic inheritance, inherited trauma, and the tangible inheritance of physical objects are all explored throughout the work. The project was inspired by the loss of my mother, and my subsequent diagnosis with a BRCA2 mutation. The fractured form was inspired by the gaps in memory that are created as a result of grief. The Illuminated Empty Spaces aims to define the space that grief leaves behind, and ultimately define what that space creates room for.

"Plasticpoems" is a text-based, unnarrated animated video poem about plastic pollution based on two shaped/visual/concrete poems.

"Pacific Oyster" is part of a series titled Invaders, which focuses on non-native species of creatures and seaweeds which have taken over certain areas of the UK shoreline. The Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has been dominating native oyster populations since it was introduced in the late 19th century as an alternative to the already declining native oyster population. Harvesting of the wild Pacific Oyster has been encouraged in order to keep numbers under control. There are ethical implications of such practices which create a rift between policy and morality, as foraging is carefully controlled in the UK, but perhaps …
