1% left of 100 is a documentary poetics research project exploring the confluence of identity, family, and language. Crafted in a hybrid format that mixes Spanish and English according to my personal idiolect, which is itself a product of my heritage as a Puerto Rican, Africa, native Taino American, this poem engages with exciting new approaches to thinking about race which liberate us from talking about physical features and takes us instead toward race as a social fact, a product of culture, history, and family. This chapter focuses on the female roles and relationships in Natalia Toledo Paz’s bilingual collection of poems, Ca gunaa gubidxa, ca gunaa guiiba’ risaca/Mujeres de sol, mujeres de oro (2002). The author sets her poems in a world, where all the themes and plots are performed by women. Natalia is the daughter of Francisco Toledo, a prominent Mexican painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, and Olga de Paz, a Zapotec weaver and hammock maker. In 2004, she was awarded a prestigious Nezahualcóyotl Prize for Indigenous-Language Literature. Her bilingual works (Zapotec/Spanish) have been recognized in numerous anthologies all over the world and …

En sus primeras obras de los años sesenta y setenta hay una gran cantidad de referencias al jazz, el rock y el pop. Through the consideration of the figure of La Llorona in poetic narratives, these poems, which are selections from a self-produced collection of poetry in my Master’s Thesis "La Llorona in Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections on Writing and Memory," explore themes of identity, place, and memory, and offer a reflection on the role of women as storytellers and the possibility of reimagining the lore to tell the story of both La Llorona’s haunting liminality and empowerment.

This paper is a testament to the sociocultural importance of bilingualism in mainstream U.S. classrooms, specifically pertaining to the Spanish language and communities in which there is a large percentage of Spanish speakers. Approximately 13% of Americans are native Spanish speakers, this is equivalent to 40 million people. States like Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, and Texas can boast populations that include over 1 million Hispanic people (United States Census Bureau, 2019). However, our school curriculums do not reflect the large percentage of Spanish-speaking students who roam their hallways. I argue that traditional …

This document is separated into two parts, a collection of original poems and a collection of translations of the crônicas of Rubem Braga. The collection of poems, titled, “Because I Never See You,” attempt to parse the complexities of familial and intimate relationships, addiction, and BIPOC experience. The collection of translations attempts to offer a small sample of the crônicas of Rubem Braga (1913-1990), a Brazilian journalist who is known throughout Brazil for “elevating” the form of the crônica from ephemera to the literary.

La Llorona In Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections On Writing And Memory, Sutherland Jaramillo
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This paper focuses on poetic narratives that consider the folklore figure of La Llorona. I argue that contemporary nuevomexicana poets are responding to regional narratives as a way of challenging traditional structures of the lore and female archetypes to reclaim the identity and voice of the figure of La Llorona. Through literature that considers structure and archetype of the lore, Chicana feminist theory, and spectral theory, this essay surveys a selection of poems: “La Llorona Speaks” (2018) by Mercedez Holtry, “Una Carta de Amor de la Llorona” (2011) by Jessica Helen Lopez and “La Llorona” (2018) by Joanna Vidaurre-Trujillo. Este proyecto examina la presencia del cuerpo humano en la poesía de tres mujeres ecuatorianas: Aleyda Quevedo Rojas, Aurora Estrada y Ayala, y Sophia Yánez. Enfoco en como las imágenes del cuerpo en su poesía están relatados con algunos temas del poder y el genero. Específicamente, exploro los temas del patriarcado, el colonialismo, y la creación. This work of creative writing explores the role of the maroons, or escaped Africans, in Caribbean plantation society. The novel pays homage the tradition of creole storytelling and asserts the importance of this practice in creating more complete historiographic narratives. Incorporating the themes of magic, rebellion, darkness/light, heroism, and brutality characteristic of Afro-latinx literature. The work attempts to continue the decolonizing work of disrupting the capitalist dichotomy between freedom and enslavement which threatens to erase the multiplicity of black existence in the colonial Caribbean.

In 2010 I piloted a Spanish-language poetry workshop for intermediate and advanced students at the College of William and Mary. I used the lines from Martin Espada's poem for Chile as an epigraph for the syllabus: "In the republic of poetry,/A train full of poets/Rolls south in the rain." Translating this for my students into Spanish, I sought to signal the kind of collaborative journey the course imagined: a semester spent together, a train full of poets, engaging poetic voices from the south through our own creative work.
