Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

In 1966, a salvage excavation was conducted in Ramla (map ref. unknown), following the discovery of gold coins during the digging of foundations for a building. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by A. Druks. Architectural remains were found, as well as many coins, pottery and a fragment of a doll made of bone. The finds were dated to the Early Islamic period.

Cohen, was carried out following damage caused to the fort during development works in the area. The site was previously surveyed by Y. Aharoni.

In May–November 1966, the second excavation season was conducted at Belvoir Castle (map ref. 249204/722408), under the direction of M. Ben-Dov and Y. Mintzker. The buildings of the Arab village of Kawkab al-Hawa, which stood on the ruins of the fortress, were dismantled. The collapse layers were removed, and the upper floor of the Crusader fortress was exposed in trial probes dug at a number of points.

In January 1966, a trial excavation was conducted in Iraq al-Manshiyya, in the area between the Qiryat Gat cemetery in the east and the railway line in the west (map ref. 179/613). The excavation was carried out following land use conversion of the area around Iraq al-Manshiyya to industrial development. In 1966, an archaeological excavation was conducted at Giv'at Beit ha-Mitbahayim in Tel Aviv (Hil Square; Map ref. 1794/6667), under the direction of J. Kaplan. The site revealed numerous silos hewn into the kurkar bedrock, as well as remains dating to the Middle Bronze Age 2 and Iron Age 2.

I am concerned in this paper with the philological basis for Greek ontology, that is to say, with the raw material which was provided for philosophical analysis by the ordinary use and meaning of the verb einai, 'to be'. My question is: how were the Greek philosophers guided, or influenced, in their formulation of doctrines of Being, by the pre-philosophical use of this verb which serves to express the concept of Being in Greek?

The author writes (12/13/16): "The 1965 paper concerned Plato's use of dreaming and waking as metaphors for various contrasts in different philosophical contexts, and especially for its relevance to the Divided Line and Cave of Republic VI-VII. It was a companion piece to my study of Images in the Republic, published in the Archiv sur Geschichte der Philosophie in 1965, and was originally written with it as part of a single long paper. That 1965 paper dealt with Plato's attacks on images and mimesis, and tried to reconcile them with his own constant use of images, especially in Republic V-VII."

Plato imagines someone moulding figures of all kinds in a lump of gold, and continually remoulding each and all into all the others. If someone points to one of these shaped pieces of gold and asks "what is it?" Three possible replies: by far the safest, "it is gold." 2, But never "triangle." 3. Unless they are willing to accept "such", that has some safety.

The most complete previous interpretation of this passage is by Harold Cherniss, AJP 75 (1954) 113-130. This paper discusses the difficulties in Cherniss' interpretation and offers alternatives.

In July–August 1965, a trial excavation was conducted at HaSanhedrin street in the Jesse Cohen neighborhood of Holon (map ref. 177/656), following the exposure of signs of a settlement during the removal of sand from the ridge. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by Y. Shapira and financed by the Municipality of Holon. The remains of a settlement were discovered. A mudbrick superstructure was exposed, with two discernable construction phases.
