In March–April 1970, a salvage excavation was conducted near En-HaBesor (map ref. unknown), following preparations for the construction of a national park. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by D. Meiron and Y. Yehezkel. The excavation was carried out as part of the site reconstruction, including the Byzantine cistern in which a mosaic floor was discovered in 1917. The mosaic was transferred to Canberra, Australia (see Briggs 1918). The floor belonged to a church, of which no remains were preserved apart from one column base. How did the text of Apuleius' Apology originate? The question has seldom drawn the attention of scholars. Those who have dealt with it simply assume that Apuleius worked out and elaborated upon whatever he had actually said in court and then had the finished version published. Paul Vallette thus assumes Apuleius must have reworked the speech. The Altercatio Phyllidis et Florae is an Ovidian satire: a poem which ridicules certain mistaken notions of the meaning of the office of clerk by putting them in a context in which they become justifications for love. Such satire is possible in any age which, like Augustan Rome or twelfth-century France, defines a person according to his office and thereby can see the absurdity of making these definitions into reasons for praising a person's aptness for love. In January–April 1968, three excavations were conducted in Be'er Sheva (map ref. unknown), under the direction of R. Cohen, following construction and development work in the city. In Shikun D, a group of eight graves arranged in three rows was exposed, which included a grave built of ashlar stones containing the interment of a man and a woman. A stone with a cross engraved in a palm leaf pattern was placed next to the heads of the deceased. Near the graves was a plastered pit containing architectural elements and fragments of pottery jars that were dated to the Byzantine period.

In June 1968, a salvage excavation was conducted at 39 Alfassi Street in Jerusalem (map ref. unknown), following the discovery of a burial cave during the construction of a shelter. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by J. Naveh and V. Tzaferis, with the assistance of Sh. Moskowitz (surveying).

In December 1968, a salvage excavation was conducted in Tiberias, following the expansion of the Sonol gas station (map ref. 2509/7442). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by A. Druks and D. Bahat. Druks excavated before the construction work had begun and Bahat continued the excavation. In his excavation, Druks discovered the remains of graves, which consisted of stones, plaster and bones.

There is considerable evidence that the later Greeks and even more the Romans bypassed Aristotle and Plato in their treatment of teleology. Theirs was to be the age of immanent deity, of epiphany, of astrology, of credo quia absurdum. The Stoic Pronoia, which we have in fullest form in Cicero's De Natura Deorum 2, closely reflects the version we have in Xenophon, even transferring elements from his proof of the existence of deity to the proof of pronoia. Also, Xenophon's double treatment of his theme, stressing the cosmic in one chapter and the human in the other, initiated the tendency …
