Distorted Mirrors: Antonius Margaritha, Johann Buxtorf And Christian Ethnographies Of The Jews, Stephen G. Burnett
Distorted Mirrors: Antonius Margaritha, Johann Buxtorf And Christian Ethnographies Of The Jews, Stephen G. Burnett
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Antonius Margaritha's Entire Jewish Faith (1530) and Johann Buxtorf's Jewish Synagogue (1603) were the two most influential Christian ethnographies of the Jews written during the early modern period. Margaritha and Buxtorf were not disinterested ethnographers who sought to provide a balanced and fair appraisal of Jewish life and religion, but were Christians who were violently opposed to Judaism, and their descriptions were to some degree skewed by their theological and social agendas. They criticized Judaism and the Jews from three different perspectives: Judaism as a biblical theology, the social interaction of ordinary Jews and Christians, and Jewry as an order …
Utopian And Dystopian Theories On Property, Cheryl Cowles Poe
Utopian And Dystopian Theories On Property, Cheryl Cowles Poe
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The selected works of Plato, Thomas More, Francis Bacon, Aldous Huxley and George Orwell revealed intriguing political theories on property (liberty) from a utopian and dystopian point of view. The theorists formed new social orders by abolishing various kinds of property. For the most part, their arguments for destroying property were defended by presenting a cure for an existing problem and then sustained through education, psychological conditioning, social and genetic engineering and so on. Common themes and differences were found between the utopian and dystopian theories and among the individual societies as well.
Intent And Method: A Study Of Female Characters In Aeschylean And Euripidean Drama, Elizabeth H. Strafaci
Intent And Method: A Study Of Female Characters In Aeschylean And Euripidean Drama, Elizabeth H. Strafaci
Senior Scholar Papers
Aeschylus and Euripides used tragic female characters to help fulfill the purpose of religious celebration and to achieve the motivation of public reaction. The playwrights, revising myths about tragic woman and redefining the Greek definition of appropriate femininity, supported or questioned the very customs which they changed. Originally composed as part of a religious festival for Dionysus, the god of wine, revelry and fertility, the tragedies of Aeschylus and Euripides were evaluated by Aristotle. He favored Aeschylus over Euripides, but it appears as if his stipulations for tragic characterization do not apply to Aeschylean and Euripidean women. Modem critics question …

Oh Bitter Exile!: Toward A Greek View Of Xenitia, Nancy Sultan
Oh Bitter Exile!: Toward A Greek View Of Xenitia, Nancy Sultan
Scholarship
To avoid leaving Ithaca for war against Troy, the ancient Greek hero Odysseus feigns madness: he yokes together an ass and an ox and plows a field, sowing the furrows with salt. When a cunning envoy of Agamemnon takes Telemachos, Odysseus' infant son, and places him in the path of the plow, Odysseus avoids the child and his ruse is uncovered. Forced at last to join the expedition, the Homeric hero embarks on his twenty-year journey, the story of which has been retold in traditional Greek song and poetry for millennia. Odysseus is one of many male Greek wanderer figures …
Hippocratic Pharmacology: Investigations Into The Theoretical Assumptions And Function Of Drug Therapy In The Corpus Hippocraticum, Edward G. Soltesz '94
Hippocratic Pharmacology: Investigations Into The Theoretical Assumptions And Function Of Drug Therapy In The Corpus Hippocraticum, Edward G. Soltesz '94
Fenwick Scholar Program
The topic of this thesis is Hippocratic Pharmacology. While I intended to examine drugs and their efficacy in therapeutics, I soon realized the gravity of this undertaking: John Riddle and John Scarborough have been working on this for decades; my year's work would accomplish little. Instead, I found that work needed to be done in investigating the theoretical assumptions which the Corpus authors held about drug use: how did they believe these medicines worked? What were their underlying concepts? The methodological difficulty in answering these questions is evident at once. I decided to pursue this topic in two ways: first, …
