An Aristotelian Definition Of Friendship, Paul Schollmeier Mar 1995

An Aristotelian Definition Of Friendship, Paul Schollmeier

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

My paper explicates the Aristotelian definition of friendship, and it demonstrates that friendship for Aristotle can be either altruistic or egoistic. Aristotelian friendship includes three species, one of which is altruistic and two of which are egoistic. Good friendship is essentially friendship, and it is for the sake of another. Useful and pleasant friendships are accidentally friendships, and they are for the sake of oneself.

When Quod Is “Which” And When Quod Is “Because”, Thomas Nelson Winter Mar 1995

When Quod Is “Which” And When Quod Is “Because”, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

“When is quod ‘which’ and when is quod ‘because’?” asked Betsy A. Beacom, intermediate Latin student. Good question, and once alerted to it, even the professor becomes conscious of starting the wrong way with the word sometimes. The obvious answer about relative pronouns and their antecedents has serious shortcomings. Frequently the entire preceding idea is the antecedent and we do not know if the quod will refer to it or tell the why of it; a neuter antecedent is no guarantee of a “which”: sometimes a preceding neuter noun—even immediately preceding—can still leave you with a “because,” as in items …

Transgression And Limits In Euripides' Alkestis, Leshu Torchin Jan 1995

Transgression And Limits In Euripides' Alkestis, Leshu Torchin

Anthós Journal (1990-1996)

This paper seeks to understand Euripides' Alkestis in the terms of the transgression described by both Michel Foucault and Longinus. The first section explores transgression as a process that erases the prior limits in order to reconstruct and redefine them. During this process, limits and boundaries are stripped away. A period of horror and liminality ensues in which the meaning of boundaries comes into question. The second section examines the positionality of death as the primary limit that frames the events of the tragedy. The third Section explores the deteriorating functionality of the gender roles held by Admetus and Alkestis. …

The Aphrodito Murder Mystery: A Return To The Scene Of The Crimes, James G. Keenan Jan 1995

The Aphrodito Murder Mystery: A Return To The Scene Of The Crimes, James G. Keenan

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Early in Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet (Chapter III), Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, M.D., who have only recently met and begun to cohabit, find themselves in what becomes their familiar mode of conveyance, a hansom cab, "driving furiously for the Brixton Road" and thence to the scene of an apparent crime at 3 Lauriston Gardens. Watson recalls a morning whose glumness matched his own dismal mood, an edgy mood that was further exasperated by a Sherlock Holmes who, "in the best of spirits," ... "prattled away" about fiddles and violins: "You don't seem to give much thought …

Ex Machina: Electronic Resources For The Classics, Beth Juhl

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay aims to provide an overview of electronic resources for the study and teaching of classics—including Greek and Latin languages and literature, philosophy, religion, art and archaeology, and ancient history—with particular emphasis on the tools most useful for a library collection serving an undergraduate clientele. Most of this discussion is devoted to CD-ROMs and other soft ware that are available for purchase, lease, or subscription. A short section at the end of the essay summarizes resources available on the Internet. There are a great many ingenious and entertaining programs for language teaching and drill, and numerous customized Greek and …

Remarks On Some Tebtunis Papyri In Sb Xviii, James G. Keenan Jan 1995

Remarks On Some Tebtunis Papyri In Sb Xviii, James G. Keenan

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Twelve Tebtunis papyri from the University of California collection were included in Elbert Wall's 1983 Duke dissertation, New Texts in the Economy of Tebtynis. Previously accessible as P. Tebt. Wall on CD Rom 6 of the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri, the texts were recently printed in hard copy in SB XVIII under numbers 1382-1393. I first saw the SB texts during a visit to Leuven in March 1995 and realized that they included some papyri that I had worked on during my years in Berkeley, 1968-1974. They were to be part of a lukewarmly projected fifth volume of Tebtunis …

What Does Aristotle's Prime Mover Do?, Sarah Waterlow Broadie Dec 1994

What Does Aristotle's Prime Mover Do?, Sarah Waterlow Broadie

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The Prime Mover of Metaphysics Lambda is the source, above all, of eternal motion in the first sphere. It may seem silly to ask 'What (according to Lambda) does the Prime Mover do?' The answer is obvious: 'He — or it — gives rise to the motion of the first sphere'. But according to a widely accepted interpretation, this is not what the Prime Mover does first and foremost; instead, the Mover essentially contemplates. This contemplative conception is my target here. I shall adduce reasons for suspecting that the contemplative Prime Mover is not an Aristotelian postulate in Lambda, but …

The Parts Of Definitions, Unity, And Sameness In Aristotle's Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler Dec 1994

The Parts Of Definitions, Unity, And Sameness In Aristotle's Metaphysics, Mark R. Wheeler

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

First principles (ἀρχάι) are crucial to Aristotle's conception of scientific knowledge (επιστήμη). In the Posterior Analytics, Aristotle teaches us that all scientific knowledge is either knowledge arrived at through demonstration from first principles or knowledge of the first principles themselves. The first principles of a given science are the primary premises (τὰ πρώτα) of that science (Pst. An., 72a7); they express the essential characteristics of the substance about which the given science is concerned; and all other scientific knowledge is derived from the first principles through syllogistic inference.

The first principles of the various sciences are expressed through definition (ὁρισμός). …

Being According To Aristotle's Metaphysics Delta, Richard Bodeus Dec 1994

Being According To Aristotle's Metaphysics Delta, Richard Bodeus

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

In ordinary language, what is said 'being' is so-called in several different ways. In his attempt to clarify this important point, Aristotle introduces distinctions that are not as easily grasped as one might at first believe. Commentators are particular troubled by what 'being per se' means, especially in relation to the 'categories'. Some of them are also surprised to see that Aristotle leaves no room for what one might call 'existential being.' And other aspects of Aristotle's account raise additional problems. I hope to contribute to a more successful understanding of Aristotle's general aim in this text.

Sex & Mysticism In Plato, John Thorp Dec 1994

Sex & Mysticism In Plato, John Thorp

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

It is a commonplace that Plato seems to entertain two rather different pictures of our access to knowledge of the forms. On the one hand there is anamnesis, remembering a knowledge that we had before our incarnation and that we have since forgotten – thus the Phaedo and the Meno. On the other, there is something that looks far more like abstractive generalization from sensible particulars – the Symposium is the best example, though there are elements of it also in the Republic and the Sophist. This paper argues that there is also a third epistemological model at work, …

Three Fragments From Qumran Cave 4 And Their Relationship To The Temple Scroll, Sidnie White Crawford Jul 1994

Three Fragments From Qumran Cave 4 And Their Relationship To The Temple Scroll, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The three fragments presented in this article are part of the cache of manuscript fragments from Cave 4, discovered in 1952. John Strugnell, the original editor, placed these fragments with 4Q365, a manuscript which he named, along with 4Q364, 366, and 367, 4QPentateuchal Paraphrases (now called 4QReworked Pentateuch). The identification of these three fragments with 4Q365 is, however, problematic. Strugnell made his original identification on the basis of similarity between the handwriting of the fragments and 4Q365, and because the contents of the fragments is not incompatible with 4Q365. However, in his editio princeps of the Temple Scroll, Yigael Yadin …
