Epic, The Oral Community, And The Memory Of Emancipation In Ralph Ellison's Juneteenth, Patrice Rankine Jan 2001

Epic, The Oral Community, And The Memory Of Emancipation In Ralph Ellison's Juneteenth, Patrice Rankine

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

As the recently published epistolary collection reveals, Ralph Ellison was an unabashed Americanist, for better and for worse. Ellison's faith in American identity and the democratic process, which is evident at the end of Invisible Man in the protagonist's determination to "affirm the principle on which the country was built [and not the men who did the violence]" (574), is again manifest in the posthumous novel, Juneteenth. According to John F. Callahan, Ellison's litearary executor, the novel celebrates "the indivisibility of the American experience" (Juneteeth xvi). James Alan McPherson (the African-American writer to whom Ellison showed a portion …

Wyclif And Lollardy, Stephen E. Lahey Jan 2001

Wyclif And Lollardy, Stephen E. Lahey

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

John Wyclif’s place in the history of Christian ideas varies according to the historian’s interest. As scholastic theology, Wyclif’s thought appears an heretical epilogue to the glories of the systematic innovations of the thirteenth century. Historians of the Protestantism, on the other hand, characterize him as a pioneer, the “Morning Star of the Reformation,” acknowledging his theology and the Lollard and Hussite movements associated with it as forerunners of sixteenth-century change. It has been difficult to understand Wyclif as a man of his age because the late fourteenth century itself is easily viewed as a period of transition from “Late …

Spellbinding Performance: Poet As Witch In Theocritus' Second Idyll And Apollonius' Argonautica, Anne Duncan Jan 2001

Spellbinding Performance: Poet As Witch In Theocritus' Second Idyll And Apollonius' Argonautica, Anne Duncan

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The connection between poetry and enchantment in Greek literature is by now a familiar subject. The poet enchants (θέλει) his audience as a magician chants a spell or administers a drug, causing pleasure and the forgetfulness of pain in the listener. As with most other poetic topoi, this one goes back to Homer, to figures like Circe, the Sirens, and even Helen. In this paper, I will argue that two witches from Hellenistic poems should be regarded as poet-figures: Simaetha in Theocritus' Idyll 2, and Medea in Apollonius' Argonautica. Theocritus and Apollonius use the performing female voice of the witch …

Review Of Religion In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Edited By John J. Collins And Robert A. Kugler., Sidnie White Crawford Jan 2001

Review Of Religion In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Edited By John J. Collins And Robert A. Kugler., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This volume is part of a series entitled Studies in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Related Literature, edited by P. Flint, M. Abegg, Jr., and F. García Martínez. The aim of the series is to make “available to readers at all levels the best of current Dead Sea Scrolls research.” The collection of essays gathered in this volume succeeds in that goal admirably.

The volume grew out of a conference at Trinity Western University on April 24, 1999 (the editors are thus to be congratulated on bringing the volume to publication rapidly). The introduction, written by John J. Collins, gives …

Introduction, Sulochana R. Asirvatham, Corinne Ondine Pache, John Watrous Jan 2001

Introduction, Sulochana R. Asirvatham, Corinne Ondine Pache, John Watrous

Classical Studies Faculty Research

This book gathers essays that are all, in one way or another, connected with ancient Greek and Roman religions. The essays cover a wide range—both chronological and geographical—of religious discourse and practice from Classical Athens on to seventeenth-century America via medieval Europe. Thus, there is no attempt at comprehensiveness. Rather, we hope that these essays will serve to problematize some common distinctions that readers generally bring to the study of ancient Greek and Roman religion and its legacy—such as the distinctions between Greece and Rome, Greco-Romans and barbarians, pagans and Christians, religion and politics, and religion and magic, to name …

Classical Insights And Today's World, Julius M. Moravcsik

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Professor Moravscik, as President of the Society, was invited to present his views on the current state of classical philosophy at the turn of the millennium. He comments on the role of the History of Philosophy in current education, sketches the work done in classical philosophy during the 20th century, posits Aristotelianism as an antidote for Cartesianism, and recommends a Platonic perspective for epistemology.

Worlds Within World Within The One: Anaxagoras' Parmenidean Cosmology, John E. Sisko Dec 2000

Worlds Within World Within The One: Anaxagoras' Parmenidean Cosmology, John E. Sisko

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The long-standing puzzle regarding the relation between Anaxagoras' pluralism and Parmenides' monism can be met and solved on its own terms. We need not deny that Parmenides was a numerical Monist and we need not suppose that Anaxagoras failed to adequately consider Parmenides' basic principles. Anaxagoras did not attack these basic principles, because he thought that they were compatible with pluralism. He not only provided a brilliant explanation of the emergence of our world within the Chaos, but he posited a fascinating cosmology of worlds within worlds within the One. And since his Chaos is Parmenides' One under an alternative …

Renaissance Courtesy And Book Vi Of The Faerie Queene, Matthew S. Martini Nov 2000

Renaissance Courtesy And Book Vi Of The Faerie Queene, Matthew S. Martini

Dissertations and Theses

Book VI of Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, with its chivalric and pastoral characteristics, has confounded critics for several generations. This thesis provides a chronological reading of Book VI that addresses many of its problems in the context of conduct manuals such as Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier and Stefano Guazzo's Civile Conversation. Rather than dismiss many of the tensions and contradictions in the text, this study seeks to embrace them by interpreting them with Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism as expressed in The Dialogic Imagination.

In chapter one, connections are made between the opening …
