Review Of Miscellaneous Texts From The Judaean Desert, Edited By James Charlesworth, Et Al., Sidnie White Crawford Jun 2001

Review Of Miscellaneous Texts From The Judaean Desert, Edited By James Charlesworth, Et Al., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This volume is the thirty-eighth in the series Discoveries in the Judaean Desert, the vehicle for the publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Editor-in-chief Emanuel Tov and his able team of editors, including James VanderKam, the consulting editor for this volume, have produced another fine edition of these difficult texts, making them accessible in a predictable format to a scholarly audience. Each document is presented separately, with a physical description, a discussion of the contents, and a study of its paleography, orthography and morphology. Each fragment is transcribed, followed by notes, and photographic plates are supplied at the end of …

The Romans Commentaries Of William Of St. Thierry And Peter Abelard: A Theological And Methodological Comparison, Steven R. Cartwright Jun 2001

The Romans Commentaries Of William Of St. Thierry And Peter Abelard: A Theological And Methodological Comparison, Steven R. Cartwright

Dissertations

In 1140, William o f St. Thierry, a Cistercian monk and former Benedictine abbot, accused Peter Abelard, the well-known philosopher and theologian, of propagating grave errors concerning Christian doctrine in his theological teachings. William’s accusations resulted in Peter’s condemnation at the Council of Sens in 1140.

This study compares the commentaries on the Episode of St. Paul to the Romans written by William of St. Thierry and Peter Abelard in the mid-1130s, only a few years before William’s accusations. While this conflict has been much studied, no one has previously examined it via these commentaries, which are the only literary …

Ben Jonson And The Mirror: Folly Knows No Gender, Sherry Broadwell Niewoonder Jun 2001

Ben Jonson And The Mirror: Folly Knows No Gender, Sherry Broadwell Niewoonder

Dissertations

Ben Jonson, Renaissance poet and playwright, has been the subject of renewed evaluation in recent scholarship, particularly new historicism and cultural materialism. The consensus among some current scholars is that Jonson overtly practices and advocates misogyny in his dramas. Such theorists suggest that Jonson both embodies and promulgates the antiwoman rhetoric of his time, basing their position on contemporary cultural material, religious tracts, and the writings of King James I. However, the external evidence cited by late twentieth-century writers as to the nature of women's position in seventeenth-century England is contradictory and speculative. A more productive method of determining misogyny …

Philosophy As Liturgical Action: An Essay On Plato's Politics, Gene Fendt May 2001

Philosophy As Liturgical Action: An Essay On Plato's Politics, Gene Fendt

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Plato teaches that the arche and telos of politics is liturgical action. No 'purely secular' foundation of a polis is possible. Politics necessarily opens beyond itself and is therefore subject to theological critique and theotic fulfillment (or not). The Republic teaches about the primacy of the liturgical; in the Laws Plato presents the proper liturgical act for human beings.

Oh Brother! The Fraternity Of Rhetoric And Philosophy In Plato's Gorgias, Roslyn Weiss May 2001

Oh Brother! The Fraternity Of Rhetoric And Philosophy In Plato's Gorgias, Roslyn Weiss

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Brothers abound in the Gorgias, as do types of fraternal relations. I look for that form of fraternity in the Gorgias that Plato means to serve as a model or paradigm for the ideal relationship between rhetoric and philosophy. The Gorgias acknowledges deficiency not only in rhetoric but in philosophy as well, and recognizes merit in both rhetoric and philosophy, so that there is potential for the two to complement one another and when they do, to be of real benefit.

Abstracting Aristotle’S Philosophy Of Mathematics, John J. Cleary Apr 2001

Abstracting Aristotle’S Philosophy Of Mathematics, John J. Cleary

Research Resources

In the history of science perhaps the most influential Aristotelian division was that

between mathematics and physics. From our modern perspective this seems like an unfortunate deviation from the Platonic unification of the two disciplines, which guided Kepler and Galileo towards the modern scientific revolution. By contrast, Aristotle’s sharp distinction between the disciplines seems to have led to a barren scholasticism in physics, together with an arid instrumentalism in Ptolemaic astronomy. On the positive side, however, astronomy was liberated from commonsense realism for the conceptual experiments of Aristarchus of Samos, whose heliocentric hypothesis was not adopted by later astronomers because …

Socratic Perfectionism Ii, George Rudebusch Mar 2001

Socratic Perfectionism Ii, George Rudebusch

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

This paper is part two of an argument that Socrates is an agent-neutral perfectionist (like J. S. Mill) rather than an agent-relative perfectionist (e.g. in Crime and Punishment, the egoist Raskolnikov and the altruist Sophie). The argument is based on Plato's Lysis.

Thrown Away Like Rubbish - Disposal Of The Dead In Ancient Greece, Astrid Lindenlauf Jan 2001

Thrown Away Like Rubbish - Disposal Of The Dead In Ancient Greece, Astrid Lindenlauf

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this article, the literary and archaeological evidence for burial practices that can be associated with the English expression ‘to be disposed of like rubbish’ are discussed. These disposal methods (átaphon rhíptesthai) include the exposure of corpses to carrion animals, to the elements, as well as the disposal of corpses into the sea, pits or natural fissures without burial rites. They also include cases in which graves were dug up in order to throw their contents out. Here, the Greek expressions for the English phrase ‘to be thrown away like rubbish’ are explored, as well as its relation …

Cypriots To The West? The Evidence Of Their Potmarks, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Jan 2001

Cypriots To The West? The Evidence Of Their Potmarks, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Three amphora handles (Fig. 1), of Mycenaean type, bear the only possible traces of Cypriot writing found in Bronze Age Italy, and they are the only known possible direct traces of Cypriot participation in trade with the western Mediterranean in the Late Bronze Age. In this paper, I proceed first with a brief description of the marked handles and their provenience; second, I illustrate their Cypriot associations; and finally I discuss possible implications of this identification.

Barbarian Bond: Thracian Bendis Among The Athenians, Corinne Ondine Pache Jan 2001

Barbarian Bond: Thracian Bendis Among The Athenians, Corinne Ondine Pache

Classical Studies Faculty Research

In this chapter, I gather the evidence for the Athenian cult of the Thracian goddess Bendis, who was officially worshipped both by Thracians and by Athenian citizens from the end of the fifth century B.C. on. I also compare the historical record with the literary characterizations of the Thracians, and I examine the connection between religious, political, and ethnic identity and the ways in which the cult of Bendis reflects ambivalent Athenian attitudes toward their northern neighbors. The cult of Bendis in Athens reproduces on the level of ritual the polarity of Greeks versus barbarians that exists on the level …

The Mourning Of Alexander The Great, Jeanne Reames Jan 2001

The Mourning Of Alexander The Great, Jeanne Reames

History Faculty Publications

To say that Hephaistion's death devastated the conqueror merely repeats a commonplace. But was Alexander's subsequent bereavement excessive, or-to use clinical terms-pathological?l Pervading popular opinion has been a guarded (or not-so-guarded) "yes." Nonetheless, I propose to argue that a number of actions heretofore seen as abnormal are in fact behaviors typical of the bereaved. The difference in Alexander's case was due to his wealth and his authority: he could both afford such gestures and have them enforced.

Madonna De La Mer: Reflections Of Light And Memory, Amjad S. Faur Jan 2001

Madonna De La Mer: Reflections Of Light And Memory, Amjad S. Faur

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The Pioneers of photography sought to document their lives with a new sense of reality and permanence. The results have persevered throughout photography's brief history as sparse, elegant, honest and strikingly beautiful images. My research uses late nineteenth century and early twentieth century equipment and techniques to document the timeless beauty, which connects us to those old photographs by creating portraits of people, which will deceive and nurture memory. Without our memories, we respond to the present with only survival instincts. Memory is our pool of reference for all experience. Only two basic elements, light and memory, are used as …

ʻEnot Shuni (Shuni Quarry) A-3458, Deborah A. Sklar-Parnes Jan 2001

ʻEnot Shuni (Shuni Quarry) A-3458, Deborah A. Sklar-Parnes

Favissa: Past Archaeological Excavation Reports

A salvage excavation was conducted at the Shuni Quarry in July–August 2001 under the direction of D. Sklar-Parnes, following the discovery of a shaft tomb during quarrying operations. The northern half of the shaft had been destroyed, while a handmade kettle was recovered from its southern half. Based on this find, together with reports of six additional shaft tombs discovered nearby, the excavator dated the use of the burial cave to the Early Bronze Age IV .

Agathon, Essentialism, And Gender Subversion In Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae, Anne Duncan Jan 2001

Agathon, Essentialism, And Gender Subversion In Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae, Anne Duncan

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae, the women of Athens, infuriated by Euripides' too-accurate portrayals of lustful and treacherous women, are plotting against him. Euripides and his kinsman come up with a plan to dress the kinsman in women's clothes and send him into the women's meeting as a spy. In order to dress the kinsman up, they stop at the house of Agathon, a notoriously effeminate tragic playwright, and ask to borrow some of his women's clothing and personal grooming items. The "robing scene” with Agathon has often been taken to be a straightforward, if devastating, mockery of a historical figure's peculiarities. …

Telling Wonders: Ethnographic And Political Discourse In The Work Of Herodotus, Rosaria Vignolo Munson

Classics Faculty Works

Herodotus, the worldwide ethnographer and historian of the Persian Wars, provides a striking demonstration of how the account of past events of national history and the description of foreign peoples participate in the rhetoric of shaping attitudes about the present. Telling Wonders: Ethnographic and Political Discourse in the Work of Herodotus studies the narrative of the Histories in order to uncover the political message communicated to a Greek audience of the fifth century B.C.
