It was the purpose of this study (1) to apply metals which are adaptive to the casting of jewelry pieces; (2) to use a variety of methods in casting these pieces, the choices of which are governed by the alloy or alloys employed, and the materials used; and (3) to modify the designs in accordance with the alloy employed, and the methods and materials used.

This paper will attempt to give the art teacher, art student, or craftsman a reliable guide to the methods, techniques, processes, problems and possibilities involved in producing a piece of cast jewelry by the lost-wax, or cire-perdu., method. None of the available guides to lost-wax casting give sufficient depth of technique, methods, or use of tools for the craftsman or teacher who may wish to improvise a casting experience in the classroom by the gravity-steam method. The purpose of this paper was to clarify the significance of jewelry by showing it to be like a language, both in past history and today. Jewelry is divided into two general divisions, that mass produced industrially at a relatively low cost and that individually-produced by craftsmen at considerable expense. It was not the intention of this paper to separate the two, merely to explore the language of jewelry through the medium of symbols.A
